9/12 movement, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Fox News, among others, credited for Scozzafava withdrawal from NY-23 race

November 01, 2009 2:42 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From the November 1 Washington Times article, "GOP Nominee for New York seat quits race":

The surprise move leaves New York Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, with no prior political experience but a strongly conservative stance on virtually all issues, as the sole competitor against businessman and lawyer Bill Owens, the state Democratic Party's nominee, in a race most polls say is too close to call.

"It's an immense victory for the Conservative Party," a jubilant Mike Long, the state party's longtime chairman and a powerhouse in New York politics, told The Washington Times. "It shows the GOP gave courage to other Republicans to make the move to Hoffman against their own party's nominee."

"In the beginning no one believed we could prevail, and nearly everyone accused us of being spoilers," Mr. Long told The Times. "But we were given the opportunity to help take back the country for the taxpayers, beginning with the 9/12 movement and the anti-spending 'tea parties.' "

[...]

In a move that perplexed many of his conservative supporters, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had endorsed Mrs. Scozzafava, arguing that conservatives had to win seats by electing Republicans to Congress as a first requisite to conservatives winning power and being able to stop the liberal juggernaut led by President Obama and the Democratic Senate and House majorities in Congress.

On Saturday, Mr. Gingrich released a statement throwing his support to Mr. Hoffman.

"The age of party leaders picking people is over," Mr. Gingrich said.

Later Saturday, Mr. Gingrich, in response to a question from The Washington Times as to why he endorsed the liberal Republican first and had now switched to the Conservative Party candidate - whether he first put party over principle and now is reverting to his longtime view that principle comes first - said, "I did not put party over principle. There was an issue of two principles."

"First, always endorse the more conservative, and second, respect local leaders and local decisions," Mr. Gingrich said. "When the 11 local county chairs unanimously endorsed someone after four public meetings, I did not think it was my place to repudiate the entire local party leadership."

He said Mr. Hoffman's "rise is a result of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Fox News, the Club for Growth, Gov. [Sarah] Palin and [Minnesota Gov. Tim] Pawlenty and former House Majority Leader Dick Armey and virtually the entire national conservative movement joining with Mike Long, whose Conservative Party, a very established organization, which won its first big race 39 years ago."

"This was not an isolated amateur; this is an entire movement." Mr. Gingrich said.

This is very disturbing. The local people picked a local candidate and she wasn't Conservative enough for the angry white guys, so they called in the big leagues, the heavy hitters and their big bucks and they picked a ringer more to their liking. If I were a constituent of the NY23rd, I would be as made as hell right now! This Hoffman nutjob doesn't even live in the district! How is this about freedom, the freedom of the GOP party of New York was just usurped by the Teabaggers, the angry WASPs! I cry foul!

he doesnt live there and knows next to nothing about the local issues.

Thats why Scozzafava endorsed the Democrat because she knows the teabaggers are gonna destroy the party once they get control of it.

The Palin/Beckers will move the party far to the right (Palin doesnt even believe in abortions in case of RAPE! (or evolution lol) ) and will continue the path to oblivion.

Hey, the whole idea that these Teabaggers will undo themselves doesn't bother me in the least. They may describe and include a few of my family members, but only the ones I have spent my life trying to get away from. The only thing I worry about is the collateral damage that can be done on the way down. Joe McCarthy was only in power for ten years, but the damage inflicted on political discourse in this country continues into the present time and they didn't appeal to the violent element that the Teabaggers do. These angry white Bible thumpers often have guns in their other hand, and there is nothing scarier than someone who is convinced that God is on their side when they start shooting.

OK, this is rich!!! Invoking the spectre of Joe McCarthy, and then resorting to his tactics of labelling people with whom you happen to disagree? Teabaggers? White Bible thumpers?

Is this what passes for intelligent discourse? Do you actually know anything about the political parties and their histories in New York? Look up the 1965 NYC Mayoral Race (for fun....it actually was pretty entertaining).

Oh, and Joe McCarthy was not really "in power" for ten years, if you know anything about the Senate's rules for committee assignments.

Gingrich said "This was not an isolated amateur" - that it is about a bigger issue.

Well, it may be about a bigger issue, but the guy IS, without any doubt, an isolated amateur!!!

There is glorious irony in this story now, though. Mrs. Scozzafava, the GOP party endorsed candidate has asked her supporters to vote for the Democratic candidate. I am also a moderate Republican but there is nothing left that I can recognize as the true Republican in most Republican races. They have suddenly wondered into group think and harassment for anyone with an independent thought. But Mrs. Scozzafava is the winner of this hassle since she has shown such true class. If I could get in contact with her. I would remind her that she is a breath of fresh air for Republicans and she will go down in history books are a true hero. So hugs to you, Mrs. Scozzafava!!!!!

Deirdre "DeDe" Scozzafava has a website and given how rough things are going right now, she would probably love to hear an encouraging word: http://www.dedeforcongress.com/

Hoffman, the ringer, has called her a turncoat for endorsing the Democrat. What should we call him? An interloper? A shill? An empty suit?

I am not angry and I am not bitter. But Southern, angry, white, male, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant does not describe me or anyone in my family or most of the people I care about, but it does describe the largest segment of the group telling me that I am not "a real American" or "a real Christian" and they are.

Hey, I'm a Southern, white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant female and I'm sick of these "angry white guys" who tell me that because I find Fox and hate talk radio completely OFFENSIVE and dishonest, I refuse to jump on the phony hate Obama because he's evil [he's not] bandwagon and because, as a Christian, I believe in the teachings of Christ, not the hateful, exclusive rhetoric that these guys have MADE UP and call Christianity, that I'm un-American and not a "real Christian."

There are lots of people out there like you bintx, and it kind of stinks to be looked at as part of that group just because you share a lot of the basic descriptors. Don't let it get you down. I am white, too, and I dress and act very conservatively, so people make some assumptions about me based on appearance. Sometimes, that is okay, I'm generally considered non-threatening, and law-abiding, so I get ignored, but other times, people make this assumption and think I will share their repugnant views, and they get mad at me when they find out how liberal I am. It just goes to show you that you really can't judge a book by the cover.

She wasn't picked by the local people. The Republican party picked her.
There was no primary. The local people only had a choice between a democrate and a republican. When you compare the two candidates there really wasn't any difference. Hence the reason she withdrew and now supports the Democratic candidate.

Should someone shout out Fox with YOU LIE. Flipping past Fox I saw a clip about statins and the H1N1 so I went back to watch. Was I suprised...scrolling along the bottom they have a message that says "Scozzafava has dropped out to make room for Hoffman".. I thought they had not heard that is not why she dropped out and that she is endorsing Owens. Nope. I checked back three hours later and they are still running the scroll. So they are in fact telling a big old fat lie. Nothing new for Fox. But they are giving the impression that Scozzafava is supporting Hoffman.

You are exactly correct...but the question is, why? It is obviously incorrect.

How about this? Gingrich endorsed Scozzafava over Hoffman, the liberal over the conservative in NY23. Gingrich's main mouthpiece is now through Fox. If you want to spin what is now a deep embarrassment to Mr. Gingrich and to try to retrieve his reputation amongst conservatives, you have to spin the story somehow. Beck actually was ill-mannered enough to take the former Speaker to task for his "ready - fire - aim" approach, which was amateurish for a seasoned political operative like the former Speaker.

This is going to be a totally unpredictable race until Election day. It is a Republican race, but New York Republicans -- even upstate ones -- are generally more liberal than their party. (If they don't look back to Rockefeller and Javits, they at least are closer to Pataki and D'Amato than to their state or national party.) Hoffman has one advantage, the fact that it is a special election, which helps the enthusiastic extremes. But if I were Owens, I'd be plastering that quote on ads and handbills and posters, complete with pictures of Palin, Beck and Limbaugh. "Are these the outsiders you want representing our district?" It might just cause a few last minute changes of votes.

The FAR RIGHT WING LOONS are taking over the REPUBLICAN party and even if they win NY23 all they will accomplish is to marginalize the party to an also ran status. For these clowns ideological purity trumps inclusivness.

And why not? Why is it (logically speaking) a crime to honestly admit to an ideology in which one believes? Is it "FAR RIGHT WING (LOONS)" to simply believe in personal liberty and responsibility, and the desire to be left alone by autocrats who lack the competence (but not the arrogance) to presume to dictate to us?

I admit that it is laughable when someone like O'Reilly says on his show that he's not interested in ideologues....he uses the term as a perjorative, as have you, above. Both of you should realize that everyone has an ideology at the margin.
