NY Times breaks new ground, labels (liberal) Congressman a "wing nut"

November 02, 2009 9:12 am ET by Eric Boehlert

It was from the Times' Week in Review piece on Florida Congressman Alan Grayson, who's made the news in recent weeks by using the kind of aggressive, tough-talking and controversial political rhetoric that's been associated with conservatives movement for at least the last 15 years in this country.

The Times though, immediately swoops in for its assessment of the new Democratic player: "Alan Grayson, the Liberals’ Problem Child."

This was a preview headline found in the Metro section [emphasis added]:

Representative Alan Grayson, a Democrat from Florida, is a wing nut, which is notable because he hurls his nuts from the left.

And this passage drove the point home:

Mr. Grayson could be the latest incarnation of what in the American political idiom is known as a wing nut — a loud darling of cable television and talk radio whose remarks are outrageous but often serious enough not to be dismissed entirely. Mr. Grayson is the more notable because he hurls his nuts from the left in a winger world long associated with the right.

The Times suggests Grayson's a "wing nut," and then concedes the derogatory term is usually used to describe denizens on the far right fringes. ("Moon bat" is probably the liberal equivalent.) But how unusual is it for the august Times to call a sitting member of Congress a a "wing nut"? Based on a search of Nexis, I'm pretty sure Grayson is the first Congressman who's ever been slimed that way by a Times writer.

Agreed, DAWUSS. So, the 'liberal' media, print this time, decides to finally use the somewhat pejorative term 'wing nut', and the target of this? A liberal Democrat? Guys, your conservatism is showing.

By the way, NY Times, I'm pretty sure 'wing nut' is actually a shortened version of 'right-wing nut' so, you've not only chosen a poor target, you've aimed in the wrong direction. Did you take shootin' lessons from Dick Cheney?

Actually, I rather like Mr. Grayson of Florida. I think he made a mistake in his defense of his use of the word holocaust to describe the sacrifice of 44,000 Americans each year to a bad health care system, but that is the only thing I have seen wrong with his stance. I would like to see more unabashed liberals out there. And if the New York Times wants to label him a wing nut, what about my favorite-Michele Bachmann? I live to see what stupid and outrageous thing she will blurt out next.

I don't have a problem with his use of the word "holocaust." The only problem is that so many people immediately think of the capital-H "Holocaust" when hearing the word that they don't realize the origins of the word far predate Nazi Germany. I'm pretty sure little-h "holocaust" is what Grayson was saying.

I took it that way, a sacrifice, a burnt offering. He didn't state the difference very well, so it came off as bumbling.

I see ... so left-wing politicians that say controversial things out are "WINGNUTS" ... But Grassley, Inhoffe and Bachmann are serious conservative thought-leaders ...

I watched the McLaughlin Group yesterday. Old John was waxing poetic over Ms. Bachmann and he couldn't understand why Liberals are being so mean to this rising star. Eleanor Clift was the only one who really ripped into her, and was scolded for letting Bachmann get to her. Clarence Page was his wry self, he told the truth, Liberals just love it when she says crazy things. John scolded Montel Williams for telling her to go slit her wrists, but Bachmann is actually the one who starts these violent images in her own speeches.

The NY Times is slowly eroding in my opinion. Today they had an article about Fox News claiming "If Fox News is biased, so is everyone else"

Nowhere in the article did it mention the literally thousands of times death panel smears, birther smears, Obama is a nazi smears, etc. have been featured on both Fox's "opinion" shows and its news shows. They refuse to give Obama any credit for standing up to the network. The irony of situation is that Obama has had to publicly call out Fox News only because all the supposedly "liberal" media sources continue to ignore the misinformation campaign that has intensified all year long at Fox News. They keep giving them credibility as just another news source that has a right to express their opinion no matter how provably false their accusations. It's sad because I love the Times but their coverage of Fox News is just disgusting.

It was an op-ed, not an article, but yeah, I read it too.

And the issue has never been that FoxNews has a bias in their opinion shows, and for the author of that opinion piece to not understand what the true objections are to FoxNews distortions, lies and omissions is a fairly offensive mistake.

Well if that was an op-ed it sat right in the middle of the newspaper. They usually leave Op-Eds on the last page.

"The NY Times is slowly eroding in my opinion."

It eroded down to bare rock during Whitewater. I'm not sure it's possible to detect further erosion.

("Moon bat" is probably the liberal equivalent.)

Definitely. Remember when Jerry Brown was referred to as "Governor Moonbeam"?
