NewsBusters -- very serious media critics

November 12, 2009 1:48 pm ET by Simon Maloy

Media criticism is serious business, and no one takes it more seriously than the crack bias sleuths over at NewsBusters. They take it so seriously, in fact, that they really don't like it when some Johnny-come-lately struts around pretending to be a big-time media critic. Take, for example, NewsBuster Jeff Poor's latest entry, in which he goes after New York Times columnist Paul Krugman's blog post this morning attacking Fox Business Network, calling it Krugman's "media critic impersonation."

I actually have to agree with Poor on this one. Krugman may be a Nobel Prize-winning economist and columnist, but he has no idea how difficult it is to critique the media, to pick out those stories that really matter and dissect them, pulling out the most important facts and explaining the subtle nuances that direct and color news coverage.

Just look at this entry Jeff Poor posted to NewsBusters this morning, less than two hours before attacking Krugman for impersonating a media critic:

Chuck Norris: Obama Wants 'To Create a One World Order' at Copenhagen Climate Talks

Are the upcoming Copenhagen climate talks really about nothing more than hammering out a world-wide agreement about carbon emissions to curb warming? Not according to martial arts professional and actor Chuck Norris.

Norris appeared on the Fox News Channel's Nov. 11 "Your World with Neil Cavuto" to promote his new book, "The Official Chuck Norris Fact Book: 101 of Chuck's Favorite Facts and Stories." He explained the upcoming Copenhagen talks in December were a push by President Barack Obama to form a "one world order."

"Definitely," Norris said. "I really think he is going over there to try to create a one world order."

That's similar to Lord Christopher Monckton's belief, who recently warned Obama was "poised to cede U.S. sovereignty" at Copenhagen. Norris' fear is that since some third-world countries have not caught up economically to the United States, this would be a backdoor way to help them catch up - by giving "our money" to them.

Take notes, Mr. Krugman. That's how you critique the media.

You're talking about a blog format as compared to the New York Times.

And I've noticed that your critiques of NewsBusters rarely offer any insight of your own. You just basically cut and paste from their posts, but offer little in the way of something interesting to read.

NewsBusters is designed to point out bias in the media as a whole. Your job is to be critical of NewsBusters. How low on the totem pole do you have to be before you realize how sad your column is?

Gee, I am sooooo surprised that someone with the name "rottenacorn" would stand-up for NewsBusters!

Yup, acorn is 100% spot-on. NewsBusters is nothing more than just a media critique site. Nothing right-wing conservative or blind ideology at all over there at good-old straight-as-an-arrow NewsBusters ... BWAHAHAHA!

No one said they are straight as an arrow. But they also don't hide their mantra, which is combatting liberal media bias. Perhaps you should actually consider reading a post before making sarcastic comments which demonstrate one's 12-year-old mentality.

Oh, that is rich! A lecture from "rottenacorn" who called NewsBusters "nothing more than just a media critique site" before a few hours later realizing that rottonacorn now looks like an idiot and admitting that NewsBusters is a right-wing shill site ... This is too much fun!

Really, Acorn? This is where you gonnna make your stand? Over a post involving the political wisdom of Chuck Norris? This is where you choose to fight the fight?

I'm not making a stand or even defending it. It just seems non-sensical to compare that to the Krugman critique, when that is comparable to comparing a piece from the E! Network to something on C-Span. They both have their roles, it doesn't mean one has more integrity than the other.

Regardless, Maloy is a second-rate blogger at best. This guys claim to fame is having to 'suffer; throught the Rush Limbaugh show everyday and pick out things that he said on the radio that you libs wouldn't agree with. How is that anything more than what paparazzi do for a living?

actually, if you read more of the postings regarding newsbusters by the MMfA crew, they deliver a lot of insight in breaking down the "watchdog's" inability to really critique the media. sure, they cut and paste their postings if the bulk of the article, but thats the point of addressing their postings. otherwise, they wouldnt be able to cite what they are critiquing.

as far as newsbusters goes, how is it designed to point out bias "as a whole" when it only goes after liberals, just as MMfA goes after conservatives? all newsbusters does is document some liberals that say something liberal, show how liberal they are, barely even quote them, or cite what they say and then claim its liberal. that's something a 5 year old could manage... hell, im sure there are a lot of people who are working there that are that age.

and the only job of MMfA is not to be critical of newsbusters. if you managed to peruse the rest of this site, you would see that it documents MUCH more than other watchdogs. maybe you should turn down your ignorance meter next time.
