AP fact-checks Palin's Going Rogue

November 13, 2009 5:59 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From the Associated Press' November 13 fact-check of Sarah Palin's memoir Going Rogue: An American Experience:

Sarah Palin's new book reprises familiar claims from the 2008 presidential campaign that haven't become any truer over time. Ignoring substantial parts of her record if not the facts, she depicts herself as a frugal traveler on the taxpayer's dime, a reformer without ties to powerful interests and a politician roguishly indifferent to high ambition.

Palin goes adrift, at times, on more contemporary issues, too. She criticizes President Barack Obama for pushing through a bailout package that actually was achieved by his Republican predecessor George W. Bush - a package she seemed to support at the time.

A look at some of her statements in "Going Rogue," obtained by The Associated Press in advance of its release Tuesday:

___

PALIN: Says she made frugality a point when traveling on state business as Alaska governor, asking "only" for reasonably priced rooms and not "often" going for the "high-end, robe-and-slippers" hotels.

THE FACTS: Although travel records indicate she usually opted for less-pricey hotels while governor, Palin and daughter Bristol stayed five days and four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House luxury hotel (robes and slippers come standard) overlooking New York City's Central Park for a five-hour women's leadership conference in October 2007. With air fare, the cost to Alaska was well over $3,000. Event organizers said Palin asked if she could bring her daughter. The governor billed her state more than $20,000 for her children's travel, including to events where they had not been invited, and in some cases later amended expense reports to specify that they had been on official business.

___

[...]

___

PALIN: Rails against taxpayer-financed bailouts, which she attributes to Obama. She recounts telling daughter Bristol that to succeed in business, "you'll have to be brave enough to fail."

THE FACTS: Palin is blurring the lines between Obama's stimulus plan - a $787 billion package of tax cuts, state aid, social programs and government contracts - and the federal bailout that Republican presidential candidate John McCain voted for and President George W. Bush signed.

Palin's views on bailouts appeared to evolve as McCain's vice presidential running mate. In September 2008, she said "taxpayers cannot be looked to as the bailout, as the solution, to the problems on Wall Street." A week later, she said "ultimately what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy."

During the vice presidential debate in October, Palin praised McCain for being "instrumental in bringing folks together" to pass the $700 billion bailout. After that, she said "it is a time of crisis and government did have to step in."

___

PALIN: Says Ronald Reagan faced an even worse recession than the one that appears to be ending now, and "showed us how to get out of one. If you want real job growth, cut capital gains taxes and slay the death tax once and for all."

THE FACTS: The estate tax, which some call the death tax, was not repealed under Reagan and capital gains taxes are lower now than when Reagan was president.

Economists overwhelmingly say the current recession is far worse. The recession Reagan faced lasted for 16 months; this one is in its 23rd month. The recession of the early 1980s did not have a financial meltdown. Unemployment peaked at 10.8 percent, worse than the October 2009 high of 10.2 percent, but the jobless rate is still expected to climb.

___

PALIN: She says her team overseeing the development of a natural gas pipeline set up an open, competitive bidding process that allowed any company to compete for the right to build a 1,715-mile pipeline to bring natural gas from Alaska to the Lower 48.

THE FACTS: Palin characterized the pipeline deal the same way before an AP investigation found her team crafted terms that favored only a few independent pipeline companies and ultimately benefited a company with ties to her administration, TransCanada Corp. Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders during the process, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada.

___

PALIN: Criticizes an aide to her predecessor, Gov. Frank Murkowski, for a conflict of interest because the aide represented the state in negotiations over a gas pipeline and then left to work as a handsomely paid lobbyist for ExxonMobil. Palin asserts her administration ended all such arrangements, shoving a wedge in the revolving door between special interests and the state capital.

THE FACTS: Palin ignores her own "revolving door" issue in office; the leader of her own pipeline team was a former lobbyist for a subsidiary of TransCanada, the company that ended up winning the rights to build the pipeline.

They won't run her. But her candidancy will push the person who does get the nomination to the right.

All the smart people in the Republican Party know she can't be their candidate, but she will influence the race.

      jethro,

Thanks for your genuine love and concern for America and its conservative resurgence. Why where would we be if we didn't listen to the socialist/progressives watching our backs?

As far as being angry however, we'll let you keep the leftist radicals that found a home in today's democrat party and I'll try not to get mad if I were still a member of that party. We Americans will do alright thank you, if you let us figure out who we should choose to lead the conservative movement and Americans can sit back an marvel at whom you pick to dict6ate the change this administration has brought in remaking this country into Cubamerica.

Keep up the good work, media matters (for very little) in making sure that the world understands how irrelevant Mrs. Palin is by keeping up the 24-7 coverage and the media 'orgy' that earlier you seemed to be complaining about.

In the meantime, speaking truth to/about progressives and with a shout out to my two favorite homies....barak hussein obama, mmm-mmm-mmm and dr. joe medicine crow!

Thanks for your genuine love and concern for America
And just to show you all MY love for America, here's two darkies who don't look like me. There's that colored man who moved out of the ghetto and into my neighborhood putting a silly hat on a stupid elderly Indian. Both of them should go back to the countries they came from. Rush Limbaugh rocks.

But don't you guys need more than a 36% approval rating to have a resurgence? Choose anyone you wish. Even someone who can't complete a single term governing a frozen wasteland. On the plus side its good to see you giving a shout out to some non white homies for a change.

Here are a few handy tips for conservatives who wish to be taken seriously in the fact-based universe:

        1. Avoid gratuitous use of the President's middle name.
        2. Learn to spell his first name.
        3. Refer to the Democratic party by its correct name.
        4. Leave out the nonsense about socialism and Cuba.

Totally agree. However, the main objective of a lot of conservatives (demonstrated daily on this site) isn't to be taken seriously, it's to annoy libruls. Therefore, those conservatives will do just the opposite.

Wow. 11 reporters to fact check a book, and yet ACORNistas are a "non story". The MSM "fact checking" a SNL skit, and yet Bauer's ties to ACORN ignored.

      Well played, mediacrats. Well played.

You realize Obama isn't any better when it comes to drugs? It is an awfully weak argument to make in any event. Can we attack facts not character please? Trying to put someone down because they are "drug addicted" is a last resort attempt that isn't changing anyone's mind.

Obama was never a drug addict and you know that statement is a flat out lie. I do agree, however, that we shouldn't fall to the low level of the right wing and begin name calling. We have plenty to argue on policy and do not have to resort to name calling. I just wish the right wing would begin to follow that lead.

Interesting turn of events, diamonds. Now, being a drug addict and making your hired help purchase them illegally to feed your own addiction is simply a character flaw? Interesting how far the right has come on this subject. Who said Limbaugh was all bad?

I'm soooo sick of conservatives bringing up Acorn! Every chance u "CONS" get, u bring up Acorn. According to all you "CONS" Acorn is one of the BIGGEST threats to America. GET REAL PEOPLE!!! Last I checked, while u "CONS" have been railing against Acorn u have all been standing behind BLACKWATER. So, just so I have this right, it's not ok to have a grand total of 4 employees out of thousands not stick to proper protocol? That warrants an immediate withdraw of all federal funds, right? It's ok tho to have an agency who is in a foreign Country, representing America, kill civilians, and gang rape a female co-worker? All you "CONS" vote against the Franken amendment, which would allow rape victims to claim damages in civil court, and have yet to rail against Blackwater saying they need their federal funds pulled because they r a discrace against America, as u have said about Acorn.
Thats the Problem. I have no problem railing against an organization that is bad for America, but all you "CONS" only rail against org's that u r told to rail against. Heaven forbid that u actually think for urselves! You want Acorns funding to be pulled? Start talking about Blackwater getting their BILLIONS pulled.
