Rupert Murdoch attacks NY governor as someone who is "blind and can't read braille"

November 17, 2009 4:44 pm ET by Oliver Willis

It seems like Mr. Murdoch is on a tear, last week he went after President Obama with an invented quote, and now he's made some tasteless remarks about NY governor David Paterson who became legally blind after an ear infection he suffered as an infant.

From the Huffington Post:

At Tuesday's Wall Street Journal's CEO Council, Murdoch was asked about the state of civil discourse, but he wanted to speak about the problems in American politics. In doing so, he trashed New York Governor David Paterson by describing him as "a very nice, honest man who's blind and can't read braille and doesn't really know what's going on."

      From the New York Times:

As The New York Times also reported, former Gov. Mario M. Cuomo recalled playing basketball against Mr. Paterson in a charity game a decade ago.

“David was on the other side,” Mr. Cuomo said. “I said: ‘What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be blind.’ He said, ‘I’m guarding you.’ Just what I wanted: a blind guy to guard me. The second time down the court, he stole the ball.”

A 2002 story from The Associated Press also quotes Mr. Cuomo discussing Mr. Paterson’s basketball skills. “He’s got some kind of sonar for the basket,” Mr. Cuomo said.

In other words, completely blind in one eye. Legally blind in the other. yet he could still probably kick Rupert Murdoch's sorry butt at basketball.

What does this have to do with anything? In one sense, nothing. In another sense, it has exactly the same relevance as Rupert Murdoch's stupid, stupid comments about David Paterson.

I can't wait for fairliberal to show up with evidence that blind people are in league with ACORN, so it was okay to say this.

I'm sure all of you were equally upset when SNL made fun of Patterson?

Um, Dork, do you not see a difference? SNL is parody - it intentionally exaggerates features to make them funny. Murdoch's comments were meant to question Paterson's actual ability to hold office. Not really the same thing at all.

Uh, I think WANTONLY making fun of a disabled person JUST TO BE "FUNNY" is worse than seriously questioning the person's ability to perform an important duty. That's just me, though.

            seriously questioning the person's ability
Nothing wrong with questioning someone's ability. Except that Murdoch wasn't questioning. It was an attack.

I was. SNL's portrayal of Paterson and Murdoch's comments are both unfunny cheap shots.

How can you utter a sentence like that? "a very nice, honest man who's blind and can't read braille and doesn't really know what's going on." I mean. It first sounds like he's met him and liked him, then he goes on to insult him?

He could've just said "He's a very nice, honest man, however, I don't think he's right in his policies".

No, Murdoch is either loosing it, or playing some game, I don't know which one is scarier.
