A Palin sexism allegation falls flat

November 18, 2009 11:09 am ET by Jamison Foser

NBC Washington Bureau Chief Mark Whitaker thinks it's sexist to say Sarah Palin isn't ready to be president:

Still, the widespread suggestion in some of the media commentary that she simply isn't qualified enough to be considered a viable presidential candidate is ridiculous.

For male politicians, it's always been a rule of thumb in politics and the media that once you were on a presidential ticket, you were automatically elevated onto the short list of contenders for future races. If George H.W. Bush had lost in 1988, does anyone think Dan Quayle would not have been talked about as a potential candidate for 1992, even with all the political flaws he revealed in that race? Would the media have taken John Edwards as seriously in 2008 if he hadn't been John Kerry's running mate in 2004?

I don't buy it.

By the end of the 1988 campaign, Quayle had served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and was in the middle of his second term in the Senate.  And as much as his performance during the '88 campaign was ridiculed, I don't recall him being incapable of naming a single newspaper he read.  By the end of the 2004 campaign, John Edwards had served six years in the Senate, where he served on the Judiciary and Intelligence Committees.  Like Quayle, Edwards wasn't stumped by a question like "What newspapers do you read?"

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, served about 60 percent of a term as Governor of Alaska before abruptly and bizarrely quitting.  And her Vice Presidential campaign made both Quayle and Edwards look positively Jeffersonian.

Oh, and even after serving a term as Vice President, Dan Quayle was widely portrayed as an idiot.  I find it amazing that Whitaker thinks that if Bush/Quayle had lost in '88, nobody would have questioned whether he was ready to be a viable candidate in 1992.  Amazing.  And Whitaker can't possibly be under the impression that John Edwards' 2008 presidential campaign was free of media figures claiming he was a lightweight or mocking him.

There is plenty of sexist media treatment of Sarah Palin.  Arguing that she has displayed no qualifications for, or ability to function in, the highest office in the land isn't it.

UPDATE: Here's a reminder of a media question about the qualifications of a prominent woman running for President that was in appropriate: ABC's Charlie Gibson asked Hillary Clinton if she would be a "credible" candidate were it not for her husband.  I suspect the next time Gibson asks a male candidate that question will be the first.  John McCain, first elected to Congress on the strength of his wife's money and connections, certainly never got a question even remotely like that.

And the suggestion that Clinton -- a United States Senator with a grasp of policy detail that few of her harshest critics would deny -- was only a viable candidate because of her husband was a constant feature of her presidential campaign, as Whitaker's colleague Chris Matthews can remind him.

Point being: there certainly are sexist ways in which the media can question the qualifications of women running for office. Unfortunately, Palin will likely be the target of some of them.  But simply questioning the qualifications of someone who can't name a newspaper she reads doesn't fit the bill.

Sarah Palin, It's not Sexism, It's Flag Desecration.
You know Sarah like Flag Burning & other Political Protests of a Great Nation?
Have you noticed Ms. Palin how the Main Stream Media hasn't called you Anti-American or a Flag Carrying Fraud?
It's because we stand for the Constitution Sarah & not a Demagogue.

      Speak truth to power.

palin is simply not qualified to be preisdent....especially since she decided she wanted to make money rather than serve in government by quitting as governor.

It's worth noting, no one is saying she isn't a contender. She could very well win the Republican nomination. But poll after poll shows that people don't think she's qualified to be president.

Isn't a lot of this whole "debate" linked to what the media actually wants.
Sure, Palin represents a certain block of voters with a certain viewpoint in the U.S. but; is it really that a lot of the media would love to see her, not only running for president, but actually being elected?

Are they not looking at that scenario and thinking that this would be like the worst parts of Ford and Bush 2 mixed together and wrapped up in a skirt.
I think they see a ratings bonanza, here.

They loved it when Ford was president, since it appeared that he had no grace at all and was constantly falling/tripping over things.
Bush 2 never seemed to be able to get a firm grasp on the english language.
SNL and the media ate it up. Isn't Palin the nest greatest thing for them?

"Great" read, thanks. And you know, really the people that have been so 'sexist' with Palin are from her own party, the Republicans - LOL.

Palin should take a look in her Republican mirror to see Republican Women for the Senate are a big grand total of 4 with a gigantic total of 17 in the House of Representatives. Wow. On the other side, the Democrat Women for the Senate are 13, and 59 for the House of Representatives. Uh, oh. LOL.

Since Sarah Palin was specifically chosen because of her sex appeal to old white guys, I think this argument is stupid. Palin played that "appeal" up with her 80s palette-knife makeup, the big hair, the tight skirts and the ever present "winks." She knew what she was doing as did the RNC. To cry foul now is hypocritical.

So, how exactly is claiming any criticism of Palin is sexism different from claiming any criticism of Obama is racism? Is this the right stooping the very same tactics they accuse the left of? Too funny!

It's simple, there is "NO" comparing between a Nobel Peace President and a former Vice Presidential Candidate from the Republican Party who "quit" serving as Governor of Alaska to sale books. When you are serious in debating a real issue here, then we can.

Oh, and what's really funny is why you would think there was comparison with the two. Too funny indeed. You so crazy. Wink, wink - LOL.

Perhaps the comparison would be more fair if we called her a little white woman child.

It is possible I expressed myself badly. As a general rule, the right complains (falsely) that all criticism of President Obama is labelled as racism by the left.

Now, the right is claiming that criticism of Palin by the left is driven (again, falsely) by sexism.

I find it very humorous that they are too simple minded to see that they are stooping to the very same tactics they accuse their opponents of.

I hope this clears up any lingering confusion. ;)

Actually, it's sexist to suggest that she has been treated badly because of her sex when the reality is that Palin has been lauded by the press, pundits, and much of the GOP. It's sexist to suggest that critizing her is unfair while keeping silent about critizing males. She deserves EQUAL TREATMENT. If a man was as inarticulate, dishonest, petty, uninformed, and egotistical as Palin is, he would be a laughingstock. This is the woman who demanded that the press treat her deferentially during the campaign, who could not name a single newspaper she read, who lied about accepting money for the Bridge to Nowhere, who used her pregnant teenaged daughter as a prop, and who quit halfway through her first term as Governor of Alaska. What possible qualifications does she have? What reality-based individual could possibly think she is worthy of respect?

Why does Palin not allow reporters, cameras, or recording devices into any of the speaking events she has been doing?

Why is it found that Palin was wrong for some of her actions, yet she claims she was vindicated?

Could it be because she is full of garbage?

Even her recent puff interviews. Levi has been trashing the family, yet she claims he is always welcome... really?

      Yup . .

I'm sure we'd all feel alot better if Sarah Palin [trailing Todd and God] were visiting with the leaders of other countries representing WE, the People of America, discussing abstinence, guns, hunting, baby's daddy, working moms, brownies, victimization and the ungrateful meanies in campaigns and the MSM . .

      [WINK, ya betcha] . .

Mr. Foser I respectfully would point out John McCains rather remarkable military career was well known, at least to vetrans.

McCain followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the United States Navy, graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he nearly lost his life in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. In October 1967, while on a bombing mission over Hanoi, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was a prisoner of war until 1973. McCain experienced episodes of torture, and refused an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer. His war wounds left him with lifelong physical limitations.

A family with two four-star admirals would qualify as one of the most well connected in the country, especially in the other Washington. It was certainly known to His torturers, who singled Him out.

He did all that(your leaving out things like graduating at the bottom of his class, crashing 5 planes, being a spoiled brat at the academy, leaving his wife after a disfiguring auto accident and carrying on an affair while still married , but lets not harp on those things...right?)and he stilled picked a loser like Sarah Palin. Also can you point to any Viet Nam POW that accepted the offer to leave like John McCain was an accepted without reprimand from the military? Me thinks your "hero" has dingleberries.

Your dislike of Mccain and anxiousness to to make snarky on Me caused You to miss the point of the post. J.F. states McCain got elected on
"the strength of his wife's money and connections". I simply pasted a paragraph from Wikipedia to point out McCain had plenty of connections already. In fact congero6189599 , Your post reinforces My point McCain was a child of privelege, groomed for national political office and kept on that track despite the dullness of his star. And He did give a lukewarm denouncing of torture, eventually.

You people crack me up with your hatred of a decent woman who probably is more intelligent then all of you COMBINED. I especially like the left's disappointment of her not aborting a down baby. Wasn't that a bummer for all you compassionate touchy feely libbies? If that wasn't enough, your government owned media as well as you progressives even insinuated the baby was her daughters! You people are really a sick bunch. The type who laughed at Letterman saying AR knocked up her 14 year old daughter at a Yankee game. What a bunch of perverted fools. I gotta stop reading this supposed 503c tax exempt MMFA site because it is filled with trash. Go to Media Research Center, which is not tax exempt, if you really want the truth in media.

Toxic? Did you say toxic? Do you not know what toxic means? Almost all the comments on MMFA are toxic! In fact at least half are more than toxic. They are hateful.

And there is no such thing as "fair debate" with the likes of you DD. You don't debate. You lecture. You are convinced your opinions are facts. A common fault amongst leftists - and MMFA as well.

Last, MRC backs up their credibility with facts and data based on actual historical events. Not by spinning or taking things out of context. If you are actually interested in the truth then you should check out the MRC site so you can confirm their validity. I had the courage to check out MMFA so I challenge you to have the same courage as me. Once you do I'll be here to accept your apology.
