Politico, please define "rampant speculation"

November 24, 2009 1:22 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

With its signature breathless/naive style, Politico plays the role of Lou Dobbs booster [emphasis added]:

Former CNN host Lou Dobbs fueled already rampant speculation about his political future Monday, sending the clearest signals yet that he's mulling a bid for president — and leaving third-party political operatives salivating over the possibility of a celebrity recruit for the 2012 campaign.

Honestly, is there anyone besides Lou Dobbs and Politico reporters who can detect any kind of "rampant speculation" about his political future? (I'd settle for any speculation.) Seems like it's been mostly crickets on that front since Dobbs left CNN.

UPDATED: I think humorist Andy Borowitz gets it about right:

Former CNN host Lou Dobbs said today that he was seriously considering running for president after being urged to do so by an imaginary friend.

Maybe Politico is yelling 'fire' in a crowded theatre in the hopes that someone will think it's a good idea and start one...

This is an extension of the "Some people are saying..." form of journalism.

And in this case, the sentence should read: "...Dobbs fueled already rampant speculation among our editorial team about his political future..."

Now....why would a millionaire run for office who can't take any personal criticism.

That's why Palin will never run in the future either.

She'll milk the polemicist thing for as long as she can and laugh all the way to the bank.

I hope to God you're right. I'm just afraid there are enough idiots in this country to vote her into office.

After all, this is the country that re-elected George W.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the premise of this piece, because I have seen quite a few comments speculating just that, mostly from prominent people on my side of the blogosphere -- and I am firmly on the left -- but also from some on the right.

True, most of the speculation involved either gasps of horror or bursts of hysterical laughter, but to say that it wasn't there is simply inaccurate.
