Surprise! "Little interest" in Palin story last week

November 25, 2009 1:25 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

You mean there's an enormous disconnect between what Beltway media elites claim is newsworthy and what news consumers are actually interested in? Shocking, we know.

And it's not like we didn't see this one coming, amidst the orgy of Palin coverage last week:

I'll bet five bucks that when the Pew Research numbers come out this week we'll see a massive disconnect in terms of the amount of time journalists dedicated (i.e. wasted) to the Palin story, and the microscopic percentage of news consumers who listed the Palin book launch as the story they paid the most attention to last week. Instead, once again it will be the economy or health care that top the list because (surprise!) that's what matters to people. Beltway parlor games, and especially pointless ones involving Palin, are of no interest to most news consumers.

Well, the Pew numbers are out and exactly 2 percent of Americans pointed to Palin's book release as the story they followed most closely last week. Yet on cable TV last week, the Palin story devoured 14 percent of the entire news hole.

And oh yeah, a majority of Americans agreed they were hearing "too much" about Palin. So I guess instead of more than 1,700 "Palin" mentions on network and cable news last week, a mere 200-300 would have sufficed.

Palin's 15 minutes of fame clock is at 13:00.

Her remaining two minute drill will be the 2012 Republican primaries. After she gets blown out of the first few we won't hear from her again.

        We can only hope.

Do the republicans actually want to woo independant voters?

Then come up with a viable canidate that has an actual "plan", and no I don't mean the old mantra "less government/cut taxes", to get people employed and pay off the debt.

Only crazy people keep repeating the same act over and over, and then expecting different results.

I'm afraid Sarah Palin has been Delegated to Comic Relief.
Every since some of her Fans as she Fled from a Book Signing called her a Thief.
Ms. Palin thinks it's a good idea for the Israelis to build Settlements on the Golan Heights.
When Barbara Walters mentioned that the West Bank is really on Palestinian Land she looked like a Deer Caught in her own Headlights.

      Speak truth to power.

She was worth following back in the election as any interview she did was comedy gold.

      It got old quick though...

Yes, and if MMA, TPM, Think Progress, and other sites were giving it away, Boehlert's book might have been in the top thousand, even though -- I'd guess -- a picture of him in sorts on the cover of NEWSWEEK wouldn't draw the same attention as the Baroness Munchhausen's.

giving it away, eh?... i'm sure somebody is paying, somewhere... harper-collins didn't throw the jack they did at sarah just to publish a vanity title she could give away in order to hype her future aspirations...

You're comparing apples to zebras. Boehlert wasn't the vice presidential nominee.

            Dear Moron Von Zipper,
Sales have nothing to do with a book's merit.

            Best regards,

Yes, someone is paying -- conservative foundations with deep pockets, in order to boost it onto the best seller list.

Ye, it is. And then there are those pesky reviews by the people who actually bought the book. (silly people)

Since I cut and paste this directly from Amazon, I am sure that it won't turn out too well.

4,607 of 5,741 people found the following review helpful:
Ain't afraid of no Vietcong king
There are many kinds of truth. There are truths based on facts, truths based on faith, and truths based on something that sounds as if it should be true (truthiness). Then there's the kind of truth we find in Sarah's book: stories and concepts that become truths simply because she states them. She's a lot like our Lord and Savior, Glen Beck, in that respect...

14% of coverage on Cable news. And what % of the population does Cable news reach? We are told here almost daily, that Cable news reaches a minor portion of the total population of the US. How much coverage on Network News? If that reached 14%, there might be a story, otherwise..............

        Damn you're ignorant, Oscar.

The very first sentence should have explained this to you. The very first sentence. You can't miss that unless you TRY really hard to ignore it, yet it went in one ear and out the other apparently!
