Where's the outrage over Mark Halperin's photoshopped picture of Mary Landrieu?

November 27, 2009 1:59 pm ET by Jamison Foser

Maybe you thought that the recent outrage from the right over Newsweek's use of a photo of Sarah Palin in a running outfit meant conservatives are finally coming to understand that sexism has no place in the news media.  And maybe you thought all the attention the mainstream media paid to the controversy was a sign that they, too, are beginning to see the light -- and not simply another example of them asking conservative media critics how high they should jump.  Well, if you thought that, you'd be wrong.

Take, for example, Newsbusters.  The right-wing media critics were all over the Newsweek/Palin controversy.  But they haven't said a word about Mark Halperin doctoring a photo to portray Mary Landrieu as having semen in her hair.

But Newsbusters certainly isn't alone in ignoring Halperin's vicious portrayal of Landrieu.  Do a Nexis search for news reports containing the words "Halperin" and "Landrieu" in the past week, and you'll get exactly one result: a blog post by Michael Tomasky.  And this comes immediately after the media uproar over the Newsweek Palin cover.

Now, you might think the difference in attention is because Newsweek made the mistake of putting the photo of Palin on its cover, while Halperin's photoshop of Landrieu appeared only on Time's web page.  On the other hand, Newsweek used a photo Sarah Palin voluntarily posed for in order to promote herself, whereas Halperin doctored a photo of Mary Landrieu to make it look like she had semen in her hair.  So, let's call it even, shall we?

And, no, the disparity can't be explained by the fact that Beltway journalists love Mark Halperin, creator of ABC's insider gossip sheet The Note.  Glenn Beck called Mary Landrieu a prostitute, and the media didn't give a damn.  And when I say Beck called Mary Landrieu a prostitute, I don't mean that he hinted that Landrieu might do legislative favors in exchange for campaign cash.  I mean he literally called her a "prostitute."

Progressive political figures like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi have been on the receiving end of sexist media treatment for years, and conservative media critics like Newsbusters don't give a damn.  Nor does much of the mainstream media.  The lesson?  Newsweek's treatment of Sarah Palin was, indeed, sexist -- but many of those who criticized it don't really care about sexism in the media.  They care that a Republican was the target, and that Republicans were upset.

Crass conservative hypocritical scum. They are best at wide stances, infidelity and stalking congressional pages while holding a cross in one hand and the American flag in the other.

Actually we all know the reason. Faux news cannot be trusted in anything. No big surprise that they have it all wrong on any subject. Just shrug your shoulders and give a long sigh and then move on. They simply are NOT fair and balanced!

        Here's the link.

Also, CNN's Howard Kurtz on Reliable Sources reported on Fox's hypocrisy but demonstrated his own by ignoring Halperin's offensive photo. Kurtz and Halperin both work for Time Warner.

Of course, because while Republicans only stand-up against negative comments against fellow Republicans (i.e. Saraph Palin), but won't defend attacks against Pelosi, Clinton, et. al. Democrats don't stand up against this behavior enough.

Unfortunately, you're right about far too many Dems. But there are those, such as Jamison Foser, who do stand up. Too many progressives continue to have a blind eye when it comes to sexism, and some who do see it, don't take action.

im assuming a lot of the media, including newsbusters, isnt reporting on it because they probably dont understand the context behind why senator landrieu's hair was photoshopped like that. unless you havent seen "there's something about mary" or heard about that scene with mary's hair up like that, you wont know why the photo is sexist. however, as journalists and researchers, you would think that many of these people would eventually find that out if they looked into the reasoning behind why the picture is sexist.

Regardless of motivation or political party, that kind of thing is inappropriate in a public forum (or is Time's webpage now rated "R"?)

I think there's surely someone in any given media outlet that gets the reference right off the bat, since it's a fairly well-known movie. All they have to do is send a mass email and ask "what the hell does this mean", and they'll get a prompt response without research. I also think that the picture is so bizarre that most people would be curious as to the reasoning behind it.

You're absolutely right. I've never seen the movie but I knew about this famous scene - and I am not a journalist, who one might think would be paid to be a bit more knowledgeable about current events than the typical American.

As a liberal, it pains me to point out that this works both ways. I gave up on MSNBC during the 2008 Democratic primaries because of the vicious, nonstop sexist garbage being piled on Hillary Clinton by Keith Olbermann and others on a daily basis. Today I tend to tune out the Sarah Palin commentary on that network because I remember too clearly the pointless attacks on Hillary, and I can't help but see the current "Look at the funny lady from Alaska" snark as having at least some basis in sexism.

That aside, the point of the article is dead on: Nancy Pelosi receives MUCH more abuse from radio yakkers and Fox than Palin does, yet only attacks on Palin are seen as objectionable (I just wonder where MMFA and others were when Hillary was being savaged.) And Laura Ingraham, with her endless "Pelosi/Botox" snarkage, has nothing on Stephanie Miller, who has comics on to make fun of Pelosi ALL THE TIME.

There's plenty of sexism on both sides.

MMFA did speak up on many instances involving sexism toward Pelosi and Clinton (a search of this site provides the evidence).

I am tired and have grown so angry at the blatant double standard by the media when it comes to these things.
It's always bending over backwards to please the right and all these excuses for them. But, it's always disapproval for everything the dems do.
Just compare the media with Bush in his first year and look at the savaging they have been doing to Obama

I agree completely with this opinion. For so many years the media has been accused of being liberally biased (true or not - doesn't matter) that most now seem to be going out of their way to prove they are not and hence try to compete with Fox (so called) news by running with the same lines and lies.
when did it become accepable to lie? not just "white lies" of omission or stretching the truth to fit an agenda, but out right lies?

Why is it about the Regressive Republican Party that attracts so many gay men (Halperin as an example) to be their leaders and spokesmen? I thought the Regressive Republican Party hated the gay lifestlye and anyone in it!
Just look at the top of the party and their most of their spokesman, most of them from McConnell and Rush on down are gay and they actually think they're fooling everyone!

Beck and Limbaugh calling anyone else a prostiute? selling your soul, self respect a nd any scrap of decency you ever had, thats prostition. Those two media shills have been doing it so long they cant even feel it anymore.Thats why their statements are so predictable. They dont have to think, just pretend to get passionate about something, spew out a few howls and the script writes itself.
