Bipartisan agreement that Chris Matthews ought to start apologizing

December 01, 2009 9:38 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

From Kathryn Jean Lopez at National Review Online:

MSNBC reached a new shameful low tonight when Chris Matthews referred to West Point as an "enemy camp." He was trying to convey his surprise that Barack Obama would go to such a place, somewhere, he said, where Paul Wolfowitz would be more comfortable.

Chris, he's commander-in-chief.

Agreed.

Don't see the outrage. He was referring to the apparent coldness on the troops part when Obama entered. Didn't refer to West Point as "Enemy camp". I don't know, this isn't right wing misinformation, MMFA has it out for Matthews.

The outrage is that first to make the statement that West Point would be enemy camp for our President, their commander in chief, especially in war time is baseless and completely unfounded. It assumes that our President doesn't really care about our soldiers and it was strictly Matthew's stupid opinion, which most of the time is disconnected from what most Americans are thinking. He often speaks without thinking first. And secondly to think that just because the audience was looking somber and not jumping up and down for joy, that they were not or would not back and support this President their commander in chief in war time, that is outrageous too. Matthews doesn't get to create his own narrative so to start a controversy and get away with it, especially when peoples lives are at stake. WAKE UP PLEASE!

My, my, my Blondie. I thought BHO sent a tingle up your leg. What has happened in the past year to change that view? Or are you just expressing a personal opinion that West Point is an enemy in your sight?

Can't even watch anymore--tape after tape of Cheeeney-and no critical analysis, just gives this war criminal a voice. Stupid questions, and one wonders if he has some impediment. He would not know a critial thought if it hit him in the head.

His "Cheeeeeeeney" absurdity has reached the point of angrily correcting guests who pronounce it "Chay-nee."

Matthews became an embarrassment a long time ago.

Yeah, that insistence that only he knows how to pronounce that last name, and that only his pronouncication should ever pass anyone's lips is ridiculous. I never heard Dick Cheney make an issue of it.

In a court hearing once, a former friend was trying to pretend that I didn't know her well, and she insisted that her name was not Marsha (spelled Marcia), as I was pronouncing it, but was really Mar-see-ah.

Except her grandkids call her Marsha, and so does her husband, and so does everyone else, but somehow she emphasized the difference just to indicate that I didn't know her as well as I was claiming to know her.

So, because of my personal experience, this fascination with Cheney's name tees me off! LOL

Nope. Just when Dick's daughter started getting air time, and he wanted to show that he knew some insider info, and so said that SHE pronounces it one way, but Dick pronounces it anohter.

        Says who?

Every liberal I know has always thought he was obnoxious. Most of us mocked him for his tingly feeling.

You can't take these conservatives seriously.

When you point out that Tweety criticized Obama for getting orange juice at a diner, they have nothing to respond with. It's just extrapolating one example and trying to make it symptomatic of a larger problem. They do it to Muslims all the time.

The problem is that Chris Matthews is wishy-washy.

We like some of his opinions, but not others.

And in the mind of a black and white thinker, any praise is 100% support. And we all know that rightwingers lack any shades of gray in their lives.

This liberal will never forgive that blowhard for his "women love this war" idiocy, nor for his slobbering all over Bush's codpiece and blathering, "we're all neoconservatives now!" after the Mission Accomplished farce.

And how about his Giuliani man-crush: "Americans want a little fascism"????

Another case of a clueless right-winger thinking he knows what progressives think without bothering to listen to any is what we have here.

truthseeker77, you should change your name.

Something like "just another right-wing b.s. spouter" would be appropriate. And truthful.

You - and every other right wing gasbag, starting with Sheer "Am I An Idiot?" InSannity - forget that previously Mr. Matthews got a thrill up his leg watching President Bush prance in his cute little flightsuit outfit.

I also remember senile 2G Liddy raving about the President's codpiece, but that, quite happily, is another story...

I'm not a liberal, but I found that image disturbing and I found his constant sexist berating of Hillary Clinton obnoxious as heck.

You do realize that the world is not evenly divided between being "liberal" or "conservative," right? Based on your post, I'd guess that you are neither.

Matthews got the message pretty quick. After the speech he noted the criticism and retracted that comment. But he still has a hair-trigger mouth and no filter between it and his brain.

There was a time, long ago, when I actually liked watching Matthews.
Now, you have to wonder if the docs need to reformulate his meds.
Sometimes, all you can do is sit there speechless after he makes some statement of "fact", that only he can see.

Actually, I put this in the "truths that can only be blurted out by a tool like Matthews" column.

It doesn't matter much whether the troops like Obama. The upper brass is about 95% dyed-in-the-wool Republican. The GOP thinks it owns the military and continue to be reluctant about letting Democrats into their tent. The Joint Chiefs and upper brass fought Clinton every step of the way, and the Bush administration routinely purged any hint of defection.

Of course, no one in polite Washington society publicly acknowledges this, and Matthews certainly knows the game, so it is funny that he actually said this outloud.

      a new shameful low

when have they ever gone as low? it was an observation with a bad label choice. the righties never move on from this kind of stuff. they latch on like crazy... probably because the idiots on their side say stuff like this so much, never apologize and they get a pass for some reason, but anything liberals say is magnified.
