Howard Kurtz: Clueless or dishonest?

December 08, 2009 11:27 am ET by Jamison Foser

Howard Kurtz is still going on about what he claims is a double-standard in which the media pays more attention to Republican sex scandals than those involving Democrats.  And he's still doing so without addressing the fact that -- to pick just one of many examples -- media coverage of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign often focused on her husband's decade-old infidelity, but Rudy Giuliani got a pass for his own history of infidelity.  Or the fact that Kurtz's own newspapers covered allegations of affairs involving Bill Clinton, but spiked a story during the 1996 presidential campaign about Clinton's Republican opponent, Bob Dole, having an affair.  Or the media's code of silence about John McCain's history of infidelity.  Or ...

I vote dishonest. There's plenty in the MMFA archives to convict. This is just more of the same.

The media sometimes roaming together like herds and protect certain stories or people.

Rudy Giuliani (Mr. 9/11) and John McCain (everyone's favorite Sunday show celebrity) are the poster children for that behavior of the press.

Republican Offenders has a piece clearing this up:

"During my research the Justice Department provided a great resource for all federal offenders and I could easily observe that prominent Republicans produce 3 to 5 times more federal indictments than Dems. It may be higher. But that’s not
the embarrassing part for conservatives. So far, I have only found a few prominent democrats that are pedophiles. It’s a huge discrepancy. If I had enough time to research specific clergymen and examine their political affiliations, the numbers of republican pedophiles would skyrocket. If you haven’t looked into clergy and sexual abuse, do a few dozen google searches and take the time to open your eyes to the problem. It’s not just the Catholic church."

If the covergae were even roughly the same, that would still be a HUGE SLANT favoring the conservatives. What's more, and this is what these idiots will never understand...

The double-standard nonsense completely disregards CONTEXT.

Republicans are a party of moralists. They tout family values, they make grand pronouncements on the sanctity of marriage, extol their own brand of parenting.

Democrats do not base their political philosophy on those kinds of principles. It's more of a "live and let live" philosophy when it comes to families.

Therefore, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Republican philanderers are labeled hypocrites more often than Democrats.

well stated .They paint Dems as godless and anti christian ,etc then they pay off somebody they were having sex with (John Ensign) or become derilict in their duties(Mark Sanford) then refuse to resign ( David Vitter). They turned a blind eye even to Mark Foley shenanigans on capital hill.John Edwards and Eliot Sptizer are nowhere to be found!!
Family values platforms like abstinence only are touted but forget the results(Sarah Palin)...yes much more hypocrisy from the GOP !!!!

As an example of a 'current news issue' you cite the Tiger Woods controversy--the day of the opening of the Copenhagen conference,
uproar in India and Pakistan, Chavez fulminating and creating who knows what mischief (since your correspondent is writing out of Buenos Aires we may never find out), Europe is mulling over what further financial steps to take........this is our news judgment these days? Better consult Bill Kovach....
      cheers,
