So who's still advertising on Beck? Dec. 9 edition ...

December 09, 2009 7:54 pm ET by MMFA Staff

how many posts before I pass probation? I ask because, by the time my comments have met the approval of the monitor, I fear no one is here any longer - including the monitor, who apparently checks the submission for lack of obscenity, ignoring the content. I come to this conclusion after having written - and eventually, by which I mean hours and hours after I commented - posts correcting the mistake in including News Corp. spots as ads. They are not. Rather, they are promos - promotions, with public service announcements comprising the 3rd category possible during a commercial break. Repeat: News Corp. promotions of other FOX programs are NOT ads. FOX does not pay FOX to run them. They are not scheduled by traffic - the commercial scheduling office, where I once worked - but by another dept. entirely. They are not ads, and Beck should not be credited for being sponsored by them. In fact, they are placed after the program has RUN OUT of paying ads in any given time period, just to take up the remaining time. Now, I have no idea how long after I hit "save" this post will appear. But however long that takes, someone has to read it in order to post it. Would this person, whoever you are, please pass on to whoever wrote it - "staff" being the credited writer - not to list Newscorp as an advertiser during Beck's show? I'm trying to help you out here, for which I've gotten but negative reinforcement, which sure discourages me from being motivated to help you again.

        1) Be patient, when I first logged in, it was a long time before my posts would get moderated, and I occasionally have problems with the 'nanny filter' (e.g. using a graphic "no BS" that used the full term for BS got dropped)
        2) While those who have done 'traffic' for radio and TV understand the differences among "commercials (paid)", "Promos (unpaid)", PSA's (unpaid) and "program segments (e.g. 'coming up next on the Glenn Beck show') most people see anything during the break as 'commercials'. While listing only the paid commercials would show how little income the GB show is making, the promos and other spots also show how little of the break is actually making money.
Oh, I've done 'traffic' for several local radio stations, and the various broadcasters have different means of scheduling, I had to include promos and psa's in my scheduling, so depending on the organization, they can be scheduled by the Traffic Director (or at least breaks where PSA/PRA can be inserted).

valid points. If MMFA lists these promos (whichever dept. schedules them, perhaps your TV station was smaller than mine) as ads, they should make clear the difference - that it translates into even less revenue for Beck's show - somewhere in the post (an asterisk to indicate exceptions?). otherwise, it is misleading since, as you point out, non-professionals won't know better, and will only realize that some on the list don't pay if, again, it is enunciated that they're not ads. this post will appear after 8a est tomorrow. I can hardly wait.
