Beck's latest bigoted rant targets India and Indian-Americans
December 10, 2009 11:05 am ET by John V. Santore
In support of health care reform, SEIU's website recently highlighted the case of Karlyn Zimbelman, an American who received successful medical treatment abroad because she couldn't foot the $40,000 bill for hip replacement surgery she would have been forced to pay in the United States. And so, she went to India, where the surgery and 13 days of medical care cost her $12,500 -- $16,500 with travel and other costs.
Beck ran parts of a video testimonial from Ms. Zimbelman, who had the audacity to say the following: "I think the American health care system is excellent, but I just think it's so expensive. Where's the money going?" Beck then offered the following explanation of the cost differential (emphasis added):
The best I can figure is all that money goes to high-tech hospitals and doctors who studied at Harvard rather than Gajra Raja medical school. Oh sure, yeah, you know, it's weird. You can buy a Gucci bag on any New York street corner for like four bucks. No different than the 3,000 dollar real thing. They're identical!
But he wasn't finished. Beck continued (emphasis added):
And also, in our research that it took us, oh about 40 seconds, we figured out that some of that money here in America winds up in the pocket of a skilled doctor that helps off-set the 20 years of schooling that he endured and the loans he took out. And - you're not going to believe this one, Karlyn - some of that money seems to go to the 1 million SEIU workers in the healthcare industry that make slightly more here than in India. Because, you know, they have an American lifestyle, maybe a couple of cars, great union benefits, and homes with something that we in America like to call flush toilets.
And finally (emphasis added):
I don't want a discounted doctor. I don't want discounted wages. I don't want any of this stuff. If I wanted to live in India, I'd live in India. I want not the Indian lifestyle, I want the American lifestyle. I'm sure, no offense to India, I'm sure it's beautiful and everything. I've heard especially this time of year, especially by the - you know that one big river they have there that sounds like a disease? Come on, it does. I mean, if somebody said, 'I'm sorry, you have a really bad case of Ganges,' you'd want Cipro."
Thus, within the span of a few minutes, Beck implied that there are no quality medical schools in India; implied that medical care in India is a shoddy imitation of real health care; implied that the entire nation is an undeveloped backwater without even so much as indoor plumbing; and compared the Ganges River, a holy body of water for one of the world's oldest and largest religions, to a disease.
What does this say about Beck's respect for the millions of Indian-Americans living in the United States, let alone the Indian people? What does it say about his respect for the faith traditions of others? What does it say about his views on the tens of thousands of doctors who graduate Indian medical schools every year in the hopes of serving the world's second largest nation? Or on the tens of thousands of doctors who studied medicine in India but now practice it in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia?
Most importantly, why does Beck feel that ignorant, bigoted rants like these are funny? Or does he simply have so little respect for his viewers that he thinks he must resort to this kind of xenophobia in order to maintain his ratings?
You can watch the clips here:

These guys talk about about Obama never having a "real job."
How much of the "real world" have you experienced if you think decent wages for labor and service jobs come from management's generosity, rather that union clout?!

No one making less than $250,000 a year should ever vote for or listen to these clowns.

Da nile aint just a river in egypt. And it sounds like a disease? Come on, it does. I mean, if somebody said, 'I'm sorry, you have a really bad case of denile,' you'd want Cipro.

Great post
Maybe he thinks he's this generations Archie Bunker? You know, without the heart.
Good line!
Yeah, knock it off and quit threatening everyone, Nerz! =>
After calling the President a racist Glenn Beck should not be allowed to say things like this on a national "news" network
Anyways, I can't tell you how many times my friends have asked me WHY WE, (Progressives), are not out in the streets protesting what is going on--instead of the wacky teabaggers they see in YouTube videos.
Ideaologically pure and completely politically irrelevant. That is how I like my GOP. GO GLENN!!!

Glenn Beck in "Dumbf___k Millionaire"... coming soon to a 17-seat theater near you.
Regarding, the quality of the doctors there. To get into some medical specialities in india, it is so competitive, very hard and requires quick and vast knowledge and skills. Comparitively, the medical exams to enter into US practice are easier. Many easily ace them. (99% in all). Beck needs some history lesson too. Indians were poineers with medicine with invention of Ayurveda; that being around from 2000 BC.
If I had a surgery requirment and my insurance is willing to pay roundtrip to india and give some cash as incentive, then why not take it? I will take it. May be I will call Beck and ask him about some tips about saving healthcare costs. Btw, 'ganges' - is an old lame joke, Dont copy, Beck! be original.
You don't?
Ok then...back to ripping the right as they of course are the only bigots in news/politics. Sure...
You could also say, "...back to bringing up some random event in the past, when a Democrat did something similar, to take attention away from the current situation." I don't see anyone here making excuses for Biden's statement.
Being a part of the right had nothing to do with why we are "ripping" Beck.
You use words like "implied" to accuse Beck of attacking the Indian healthcare system. The caste system is still in existence in India, many would not even be allowed to get the surgery because of their social status, is that fair? The woman herself acknowledged that the US healthcare system is excellent, even the best in the world. That obviously implies that it is inferior elsewhere. After 1984 Canadians have voted with their feet; The waiting time there and in England for even basic procedures are ridiculous! Accusing Beck racism is silly and ignores the real issue, I assume deliberately.
Liar.
37th my friend.. it ranks 37th in the world.. hardly the best...
BTW: Nobody in India is denied treatment because of their "caste". There have been no cases of such a thing happening in recent memory. Yes.. a lot of people miss out on quality health care... because they dont have money.. or they dont have access to a high standard of care. There is a great disparity between socio-economic levels and people get health care according to their level... But hang on.. isn't it the same in the US... Isnt that what people like Becky here STRIVE to achieve...
Beck DID attack Indians... He had a point to make... and he could have made it... instead of comparing Indian doctors to "$4 gucci bags" and calling our Holy River synonymous with a fictional disease... That's bigotry... racist ... and insensitive..
In Manila my ship picked up a bunch of Indian Diplomats, to take home to Calcutta. Those Indians were being thrown out of Manila because they had collaborated with the Japanese during the war. No one would even help them load their belongings onto the ship, so they had to take just what they could carry. What dirty, dirty people, even the ones who were very, very rich!
I remember that the Indian Diplomat with the highest rank came to the Chief Steward and said, “We are of different castes, so you must feed us in separate dining rooms.” The Steward replied, “Those tables right there are for all of you, and the meals are served between these hours, and if that's not fine with you, some of you will just have to starve.” (You can bet those weren't his exact words, but this is a family publication.) And they found they could sit in the same room and eat next to each other, just fine.
When the ship got to Singapore the Captain tried to put the Indian Diplomats ashore, but he wasn't allowed to do that. They not only were living like pigs, but since they had a couple of sewing machines they were stealing white sheets to make clothes for themselves, among the more minor things.
When we got to Calcutta and they left the ship, their rooms were an awful mess, and smelled terrible. It was difficult to get them clean enough for other people to use during the trip home.
At the dock in Calcutta, India, they were removing a huge concrete slab, several inches thick. Several hundred men dressed in loincloths, shoulder to shoulder, squatted on their heels, with a small chisel, and a small hammer. At best they removed an inch or two of the slab each day.
I was surprised when I saw beautiful US Army Nurses, and Red Cross ladies, walking the streets of Calcutta. I was even more surprised when I saw little boys holler “Bakshee,” (gift) then holler other phrases containing four-letter-words in English, not usually said to nice girls. After they boarded our troop ship, I asked a couple of the ladies why those boys said what they did. They responded, “The blankity, blank GIs told the kids that we would consider that a complement, and would donate more.”
U sure u even went.. or did you just read some Kipling?
There are about 35000 indian american doctors. (Go here to see what some of these "$4 gucci bags" are doing for you http://www.littleindia.com/news/139/ARTICLE/1945/2007-12-03.html). So next time you end up in the hospital (from a public beating one hopes) there is a good chance that you will be treated by a "Gajra Rajah" graduate... who probably teaches at harvard as well.
As an Indian and a Medical Scientist I find this highly offensive. Currently 68% of Indian Americans hold a bachelor's degree... compared to the national average of only 28%. Globally, and especially in first world countries such as US, Canada, UK and Australia Indians provide invaluable services as doctors, nurses and scientists. So we can do without the abuse thank you.
And the Ganges is more than a river to us... she is considered to be a godess and a mother. The giver of life and the cleanser of impurities. So please refrain from insulting our religious figures in the future. And it's pretty much coming from someone whose religion sounds like a chocolatey snack ("could I have some Bonbons, Tim Tams and some mormons please?") and where you have a river which sounds like a funny name little boys would give to female genitalia (mississippi).
Next time you are with an Indian doctor... be careful my friend... hope you dont end up with an air bubble in your veins.
"Thank you... come again."
Glenn Beck certainly is a bigot. He is not a true American.
US Citizens are sometimes very ignorant of what goes on outside our borders. People question medical tourism in this dismissive way, but know nothing except their own prejudices.
