DefendGlenn.com issues retraction to Color of Change

December 10, 2009 7:58 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From DefendGlenn.com:

DefendGlenn.com on several occasions inaccurately reported that Color of Change called President Bush a "racist". We have confirmed that Color of Change did not, in fact, call George Bush a "racist" on its website and although we picked up that allegation from another website (NewsMax.com), that allegation is false and we apologize to Color of Change for this error.

We also accused Color of Change of lying regarding it's claims that certain advertisers agreed to stop advertising on Glenn Beck. While our previous comments were partially correct on the matter concerning the claims of Color of Change regarding the initial 20 advertisers, upon review, it appears that the accusation of lying was inaccurate. In at least one instance, DefendGlenn.com and Color of Change were given diametrically opposing statements by the same advertiser, and, in other instances, the statements given by the advertisers were consistent, but open to interpretation.  It is now our understanding that Color of Change accurately reported on it's web site and in its press releases precisely what each of the advertisers told it. DefendGlenn.com also accurately reported on its website precisely what each advertiser told it. We apologize to Color of Change for erroneously accusing them of lying and have removed all such allegations from our website.

We have also alleged that Kayne West claimed that George Bush 'gave troops permission to go down (to New Orleans) and shoot us (black people) after Hurricane Katrina' and that Color of Change endorsed that hateful statement by selling T shirts that said "Kanye Was Right". We have since learned that Mr. West was apparently referring to Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco's authorization for troops to fire on the people of New Orleans during Katrina and not President Bush never gave such an order. A representative of Color of Change has informed us that the t shirts they are selling refer instead to Kanye West's much more widely publicized  comment that George Bush "doesn't care about black people." We accept their representation in this regard and apologize for any misunderstanding that this has caused.

We have also, many times, refered to Color of Change as being the "son of a motherless goat." This also has turned out to be inaccurate. Our source assured us this was the case, and we regret the misinterpretation... And while we are on the subject of misinterpretation, we'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to James Carville, as we have recently learned that the phrase attributed to him, "it's the economy, stupid," was, indeed, not specifcally calling us stupid, but we're sure you could see how it was open to interpretation.

Wow, were they threatened with a huge suit or something?

Or did they actually decide to be human and humane and reasonable?

        Oh yeah.

Via the Daily Kos link listed above, ColorOfChange DID threaten a lawsuit. And DefendGlenn crumbled like the little lying babies they are.

DefendGlenn.com, the website created and dedicated to supporting controversial Fox News personality Glenn Beck, today issued a public retraction of several erroneous statements it made regarding civil rights organization ColorOfChange.org. The site has posted the retraction on its home page - www.DefendGlenn.com - and, per an agreement, must keep it there for seven full weeks.

"we have found that living up to our namesake, "DefendGlenn", has proven to be a very taxing endeavor, sometimes pushing our beleaguered and weary staff past their human abilities. At this point in time, all we can do is carry out our mission, do our best, and hire a Retraction Specialist to assist us with future corrections, which we expect to be numerous and egregious.

      Thanks for reading.

This one is for the admins of this site.

The amount of trivial and petty complaint you are trying to use to discredit Beck is sad pathetic and only damages your own cause.

You are akin to a child telling his parent "I don't like you anymore" for not buying them a candy bar.

You guys need to grow up because all you are doing is proving his case for him, while proving your own intellectual immaturity.

"...reported on it's web site and in its press releases..."

I know there are a lot of idiots who can't spell "its" properly, but I've never seen it spelled two different ways in a single sentence before.

      Geez.

We need more info on this. Gary Kreep's people are saying that they issued the Kanye retraction in exchange for Color of Change removing their "Kanye was right" t-shirts from sale (which they indeed have very recently, after selling them for 4 years--why now?). Seems as if there is more here than meetts the eye.
