Right-wingers divided over God's motivations behind DC snowstorm

December 19, 2009 1:26 pm ET by Brian Frederick

The right-wing noise machine is sure that a snowstorm in December is proof of something, they're just split on what exactly.

Newt Gingrich became the latest to play the ridiculous "it's snowing so global warming must be a hoax" card. Gingrich took to Twitter - where he's been schooled before - on Saturday morning to share a few thoughts about the storm:

newtgingrich As callista and i watched what dc weather says will be 12 to 22 inches of snow i wondered if God was sending a message about copenhagen

newtgingrich After the expanding revelations of dishonesty in climategate having a massive snow storm as obama promises our money to the world is ironic

newtgingrich There is something jimmy carter like about weather service upgrading frrom winter storm to blizzard as global warming conference wants US $

Of course as Media Matters has pointed out ad infinitum, individual storms have nothing to do with human-caused climate change.

But maybe the DC "Snowpocalypse" is a sign of something else. TPM's Brian Beutler wrote Friday night about the complications the storm may have on the health care vote and concluded with this line:

With all these added complications, don't be surprised to hear a new Republican talking point: Even Mother Nature hates health care reform.

RedState editor Erick Erickson responded:

I hate to correct him, but actually the talking point is that God hates the Democrats' health care deform. With funding death panels and abortions, of course the Almighty would send a snow storm or, in Brian's words, a snowpocalypse to shut down Washington.

Oh, and kudos to Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council for organizing the "pray-in." Looks to be working.

So does that mean DC residents should blame God or the Family Research Council for shutting down the city?

Didn't God punish New Orleans for allowing the Gays' to have parades around Ash Wednesday? Maybe God was off His game since the gays weren't there.

Maybe God brought in the snowy white storms to offset the BlackHeartedNess of the Republicons in DC.

Looks like Nelson got his little stipend and is willing to be 60.

Ah, the crying to be heard on Fox tomorrow and the Monday Cystjockys will really be crying in their teacups. It will be the end of the world for Seannie and Rush etc.

And now the Job creation plans unfold and the November hopes of the Cons will be permantently dashed. Unless God unleashes His wrath on election day. That God, such a joker at times.

As an aside, at another site the post was concerning how Liberal PC is destroying the country, my main adversary was incensed when I (purposely) used Xmas...he was irate. Haven't heard from him since I informed him of his Political Correctness.

This is exactly the type of nonsense people believed before science started to give us an understanding about how things work.

Diseases aren't sent by god as a punishment and neither are natural disasters.

You might as well believe its snowing in DC because god wants the Senate to stay in session and won't let them leave until a health insurance reform bill is approved then it will get warm again.

Come to think of it, it may take until spring to work this thing out.

      Hmmmm...

"So does that mean DC residents should blame God or the Family Research Council for shutting down the city?"

No DC residents should just dig out of the snowstorm just like the rest of us who have been through a big storm at one time or another. Then after digging out realize that the right wing crackpots are crackpots in just about everything.

One could make the argument that the reason DC and the east coast got so much snow, is because of global warming. If global warming wasn't occurring, the temperatures would have been lower, therefore the air couldn't hold as much moisture, and there would have been less snow.

Then again using an isolated storm in this manner would be as stupid as the right wing crackpots saying the snowstorm is proof that global warming isn't occurring. But hey, it makes sense.

Not necessarily, the Gulf of Mexico provided much of the moisture and the warmer waters of the Atlantic provide ample temperature contrasts. For example look at lake effect snows in Western NY during arctic outbreaks. In a storm such as this one the warming of the air comes from the sea surface. You can also see this in a wintertime N'or easter.

You don't know what you're talking about. Temperatures have to be much lower than they were for snow to not form. Please stop spreading this misinformation.

Cold air can't hold as much moisture, so at temps below 0 F, it is a litle harder for there to be enough moisture for it to snow, but there's plenty of moisture at temps of 20 F and above for there to be lots of snow in the mid-Atlantic states during typical winter temps.

Not true. At colder temps the type of snow is affected not the amount or ability to snow. The fact is the colder the cloud the greater the probability of snow due to the fact that there needs to be ice crystals present to form snow. At -4 C there is almost no probability of ice crystals but at -20 C there is 100% probability of ice crystals. The largest snow flakes form when a moisture laden cloud is between -12 and -18 C. In situations like this blizzard are called a "seeder feeder" with colder upper clouds over warmer cloud layers. When we think about warm air being able to hold more moisture we have to think in relative terms. When we are talking about wintertime clouds we are talking about extremely cold temps so you may be correct that at -40 C you will not be able to hold as much moisture as -20 C but since winter clouds don't rise high enough into the atmosphere to reach such extreme temps you will usually see a range that promotes snow growth. For example look at extreme northern Canada, if extreme temps prevented heavy snow totals you wouldn't see much snow there but we do. Just remember Ms. Dolly, it's all relative and if I am incorrect please inform me and also the NWS and other meteorologists who make winter forecasts.

Did you even READ the post I was replying to?

And then did you READ the post I made? I swear, it's not rocket science.

Temps can be cold enough for snow not to form.

Colder temps require more lifting to occur in order for snow to fall, since colder air is less able to hold moisture. The ability to snow IS affected by the temperature, as I said. But it's a negligible affect at the temps in the mid-Atlantic states.

The poster tried to claim that it might be "too cold to snow". Under most circumstances, that's just not a true statement, and that's why I posted that it wasn't true.

Sorry bout that Dolly thought you were talking to me. I agree with you but were talking about extreme cold for snow not to be able to form such as Antartica or Siberia. But as a student of weather there isn't an always or never as cloud and winter precip dynamics are very complex, you can tell because we bust winter forcasts regularly. Once again I apologize.

Your explanations sound reasonable to me.

I used to live in VT, so I've seen it snow in very cold weather. It's more likely to snow more, and heavier, when it's not extremely cold. But it can snow in very cold temps. These can be caused by inversion layers - where it's warmer at higher elevations, than at lower elevations.

No matter what, all storms derive their energy from warm water. They're gigantic heat pumps.

So, anyone claiming a Nor'easter is proof there is no global warming is only looking at 1/2 of the issue. A long-lasting, very powerful nor'easter needs a lot of warm water to power it.

It just makes sense that more frequent, more powerful, and longer lasting nor'easters is an indication the oceans are warming due to ACC.

It is interesting that this is the 2nd major storm to run up the coast of the eastern US this year.

Good thoughts but just remember that inversions usually lead to stability which inhibits precipitation. Low level moisture and/or heat causes instability;-)

      So:

      1. If the snow is so bad that the senators are unable to get home for Christmas, that means God is angry with the Republicans for voting against health care reform.

      or

      2. If the senators are able to leave Washington to get home for the holidays, that means that God thinks Washington is much better off without the Republicans who voted against health care reform.

There, now we have laid claim to these two stupid ideas (as if God didn't give up on Republicans actually doing the right thing years ago...)

Years ago my aunt and her Jehovah Witness friends were discussing things. First they spoke about a man they knew, another Jehovah's Witness, who had had a heart attack. The heart attack, they all agreed, was definitely a test of their faith by Satan, to see if tragedy would make them question God's will. From there the conversation shifted to the AIDs epedemic. AIDs victims, especially blood-drinking Haitians, (don'r ask), were suffering because they were sinful and God was punishing them. They saw no inconsistency in this. AIDs victims were uniformly deserving of God's punishment by a horrible death, but their friend's heart attack came from Satan. They were so serious in their certainty.

Yes, they really can assign the snow storm to Good or Evil, and then claim the exact opposite tomorrow.

Hahaha. A Birther who knows what God "thinks", and then uses God's name to propagate a lie for political gain. And on the Sunday before Christmas, too! Really asking for trouble, eh?

The eighth commandment forbids misrepresenting the truth in our relations with others. This moral prescription flows from the vocation of the holy people to bear witness to their God who is the truth and wills the truth. Offenses against the truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness: they are fundamental infidelities to God and, in this sense, they undermine the foundations of the covenant.

BTW - Using god's name in vain does not mean say god-d#mn. It means using his name for personal gain, or to distort the very meaning of god's commandments. Now, doesn't that commandment make more sense, than just saying "don't swear?"

What do God and fanatical fundamentalists have in common?
Nothing, come to think of it.

How are God and fanatical fundamentalists Different

        1. God hears fanatical fundamentalists, but fanatical fundamentalists claim to hear god, but dismisses what he says.
        2. God loves all. Fanatical fundamentalists only love those who fit their narrow-minded view of what a fanatical fundamentalist should be.
        3. God only demands to be worshiped once a week. Fanatical fundamentalists feel they need to be worshiped all the time.
        4. God asks for only 10 percent of your money. Fanatical fundamentalists put all that money into their own church, then pat themselves on the back for being so "giving."
        5. God gives you freedom to live your life as you choose. Fanatical fundamentalists want to tell everyone how to live.
        6. God's plan to save us is actually written down for you to read. Fanatical fundamentalists selectively choose what the plan says to serve their own self-interests, but they conveniently leave out these parts: Matthew 22:34-40. Don't know it? Look it up.

And fanatical fundamentalists claim to know the truth. But that nullifies their faith, because faith is a belief in something that has no proof. If you have faith, you don't know for sure. And if you don't know for sure, perhaps someone else can be right about what they believe.

        Fanatical fundamentalists are delusional idiots.

Wow. We are beginning to realize what a vengeful God this is that Newt prays to. Is that the same God that send tornadoes and hurricanes tearing through red state and tearing up the trailer homes? Mobile homes per capita highest in SC, NC, MS, AL FL and KS.

Better crank up your prayer requests JeepersFreaks.
