Geller: Passing Senate health bill on Christmas Eve "an act of treason and blasphemy"

December 21, 2009 1:57 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From Pamela Geller's December 21 Atlas Shrugs blog post (emphasis in original):

The moochers and the looters, the crooks and degenerates voted at 1 am this morning to rip the constitution to shreds, to rape the American people and to nationalize medicine. Straight on party lines. All 40 Republicans voted against cloture. It was the Republicans' desire to continue the debate and hold up the legislation. All 58 Democrats and two independents voted to end debate -- the minimum number needed. They will pay for destroying this country.

In what can only be considered an act of treason and blasphemy, Senate Democrats are on track to pass the bill on Christmas Eve.

Kind of funny that the owner of the Atlas Shrugs blog would complain about blasphemy. Ayn Rand was passionately atheistic.

This freak calls our democracy and act of "treason and blasphemy" and freak Steele calls it "flip[ping] the bird" to the American people. These people have NO CLASS.

How can it be "treason and blasphemy" when we have Separation of Church and State? :-)

Oh, it's entirely possible to violate the laws of both Man and God at the same time. In the very same way that, say, torture violates the laws of the US, the international law of the Geneva Conventions, several universal moral laws announced centuries ago, plus the very edicts of The Lord Himself.

Methinks Jesus would be more inclined to support health care for the poor than tax cuts for the rich and wars based on false pretenses. Also, if passing health care reform is treason, how would you describe the brazen dismantling of constitutional rights and liberties in the name of fighting terrorism?

I'm pretty sure Jesus probably would. I mean, he healed the sick and all, and didn't even get paid for it. Jesus is the definition of socialized medicine.

And these folks are hysterical as well, because they keep saying this would be a government takeover of the ENTIRE health care system. I wish that it were, but alas, it's not even close.

That's what is so funny about the Troglodyte hand-wringing. Unless they manage to resurrect the Public Option in Conference, it won't be a government takeover of anything.

      Treason:
The crime of betraying one’s government; Providing aid and comfort to the enemy.

Now, I'm not sure what definition Pam is using, but what the Senate and the House did was NOT treason, unless of course, the enemy in her mind, are sick people who want/need health care.

      Blasphemy:
Blasphemy is the use of the name of one or more gods, in a manner which is considered objectionable by a religious authority. ...

Now, again, not sure what definition of Blasphemy this woman is working on, but it doesn't appear to be, you know, the real definition of blasphemy, mostly because, it doesn't even remotely come close to holding true.

And as far as all of this shredding of the Constitution business, these people who are so against know they have a recourse right? Yes, they can file suit in a federal court to get the law reviewed as to whether or not it is Constitutional or not. It's really not that hard to do, but something tells me, they'll just pretend it's un-Constitutional instead of trying to prove that it is.

Well, see, that's a problem, since so many of them have been preaching for years that the Supreme Court's power of Judicial Review is itself Unconstitutional.

It's tough being a Troglodyte in a world full of facts.

Blasphemy for forcing Christian Senators to be at work on Christmas Eve when they should get to be with their families.

But it's the Republicans fault that we're where we are with that - they aren't the victims here. They wanted the Dems to be up against this deadline! That was part of their plan, and they're getting exactly what they wanted. They've been trying to delay this at every opportunity - remember the vast number of amendments they put forward when the Senate Finance Gang of 6 came out with their proposal? It took days and days of hearings that lasted until after dark to get through that process, and remember the reading of Senator Sander's amendment they tried to force last week? I could gave you a bunch more examples.

They're playing the victimhood card again, when there's no reason for them to do so!

I'm sure a few of the GOP Senators would rather be "hiking the Appalachian Trail", if you know what I mean....

Sorry, but it is not blasphemy to force Christian Senators to be at work on Christmas Eve. Christmas is a holiday which was created by MAN, not GOD. There is no scriptural authority for the celebration of Christmas. Besides, blasphemy means to deny or show lack of respect. Jesus said it was not a sin to "speak a word against him", but that to "speak a word against the Holy Spirit" was the unforgivable sin. I really don't think any Senator is going to be standing in front of the Chambers blaspheming the Holy Spirit . . . just a guess, though.

          This is stupid.

It's the Republicans who are acting treasonous and dishonest. They had plenty of opportunities to have some input on this bill, and their input was desired and requested.

But they are simply, once again, playing the victims here without their actually being victims at all.

Actually, those billboards with alleged quotes from Jesus wanting us to say "Merry Christmas" probably come closer to blasphemy than this does.

Exactly. Someone decided to put themselves in the place of God . . . that's pretty much a textbook example of blasphemy.

ANYTHING Dems do now involves "ripping the consititution to shreds"... apparently.

Extra points for using words like rape, hitler, socialism, treason.

AHHH you people make me cringe! Who cares about democrats, republicans, independents its all moot at this point. Through the course of our country certain parties have come and gone, and its clearly time for both of these to go. I thought Bush was bad. This is insanity. It seems to me like EVERYONE in government since the 70's has been trampling the Constitution! Read it, you have to be illiterate not to have some idea what I am saying.

The Bible says it is a sin to blaspheme [to utter a denial or to show lack of respect] for the Holy Spirit. Attending to business on a day which has been mandated by MAN and not GOD to celebrate the birth of Christ is NOT blasphemy. Conducting the Senate in the manner set out by the Constitution is not treason.

      Stupid people.
