Breitbart's ACORN scoop continues to crumble

December 23, 2009 9:14 am ET by Eric Boehlert

The latest setbacks:

A Congressional Research Service report commissioned by the House Judiciary Committee says ACORN hasn’t violated any federal regulations the last five years.

The report, released by Judiciary Chairman John Conyers’ (D-Mich.) staff Tuesday evening, also reports that the undercover filmmakers that allegedly caught employees of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now breaking the law may have violated state law in their filming operation.

Separately Tuesday, a New York federal judge rejected a motion from the Justice Department to reconsider a decision that ruled a bill that stopped funding for ACORN as an unconstitutional bill of attainder.

And Limbaugh, Hannity, and Levin will each devote a full hour of their shows to how they were wrong about ACORN.

Definitely not the outcome Breitbart wanted, so--as is the wingnut tradition--he will now smear CRS as a bunch of biased, librul toadies.

And some sputtering about the New York Activist JUdge.

You know how these things work, the wingnuts will ignore their unconstitutional actions, and continue to mention ACORN as "under investigation", always say that they "once had their federal funding withheld", and frame the criminal filmmakers as martyred journalists trying to get the truth out, but suppressed by the liberal media.

BTW, there have been a few ACORN-related threads here lately, but what happened to all of the suckers who used to pop up on every one with their "ACORN has to go !!" and "Wait til all of the videos are released!!!".

Is it possible that little light bulb finally went on above their heads? Is this whole ACORN story one that is too ridiculous for even the most gullible zombies? Maybe there's hope for them.

Now, I'd like to see someone like say, Russ Feingold, introduce a funding bill for ACORN, and watch their heads explode!

I am glad to hear that Breitbart's smear campaign against ACORN may be heading south. I sincerely hope that both the legal and journalistic worlds will hold him and his henchmen accountable for misrepresenting facts to the public, libelling innocent people, and attacking a community empowerment group as a poor proxy for President Obama.

But I am sure you all know that Breitbart and his clones dont really care if they are proven wrong on anything. They regard any thoughtful review of their work as not simply unnecessary, but 'dangerous'.

Even a cursory glance at their own articles shows them flying into hyperbolic fits when confronted by the simple notion of accountability. (Giles herself recently exhorted a group of Right-wing youths to 'Above all, Attack! Attack! Attack! Never defend!' LATimes, Nov 15 '09... that's a curt way of saying 'dont think or reflect on your actions, and never be accountable, just do as much damage as you can')

So they continue to plod away, blindly swinging their swords, spreading lies and unsubstantiated assaults framed with carefully manipulated data. They know that their following accepts whatever they say, even when faced with damning evidence to the contrary. They rely entirely on that propensity to walk by faith, not sight.

I mean, look at how eager and unquestioning they were with O'Keefe's Philly video. If anything proves that O'Keefe lied about his work, and totally doctored his videos for effect, that video release most certainly did. Most enthusiasts on the right never address the glaring inconsistencies represented in the videos (let alone in Breibart's release method), and refuse to acknowledge important updates that counter their party-line. Nevertheless, the faithfull right-wing herd endows even that very clumsy and poorly-thought Philly video with an all too incredible credibility.

With Breitbart and his following, we're not dealing with normal, reasonable, mature human beings. We're dealing with people whose own work is saturated with a frenzied, almost narcotic self-deception, a fanatical (even 'jihadi') sense of impunity, and a hostile disregard for the lives they may destroy in the course of their operations. Buttress all this with their own admitted lack-of-accountability, and you have a pretty psychotic creature on your hands.

I think we need to be ready for his next assault.
