So much for "zero tolerance"

January 05, 2010 2:19 pm ET by Matt Gertz

Apparently, Fox News has even less journalistic integrity than Andrew Breitbart.

Yesterday, Fox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson falsely claimed that ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis had visited the White House in September. Carlson's claim was presumably based on Breitbart's report that a "Bertha E. Lewis" - who he claimed was the ACORN CEO - turned up in the White House visitor logs released in December. As I've pointed out, Politico's Ben Smith reported days ago that he had checked out Breitbart's claim, calling up the White House, who told him that the Bertha Lewis in the logs wasn't ACORN's, and ACORN, who told him their CEO's middle initial wasn't E.

After Carlson regurgitated this right-wing falsehood that had been debunked days earlier, Ari Rabin-Havt, Media Matters' Vice President for Communications and Research, wrote a letter to Fox News Senior Vice President Michael Clemente asking how this error would be handled in light of the "zero tolerance" policy the network supposedly instituted in November.

We haven't heard back.

A funny thing happened in the last 24 hours, though. Breitbart issued a belated correction to his post, acknowledging that the White House says that the Bertha Lewis who visited wasn't the ACORN CEO, and that he has no evidence to the contrary. Meanwhile, Fox & Friends went quiet, issuing no correction to their false reporting.

It's pretty sad day for a national news network when you make Andrew Breitbart look responsible.

Every day is a sad day when you realize that you breathe the same air as the dolts on Fox & Friends.

So Fox "News," upset about their constant lies being exposed, gets all upset and says that they will enact a "zero tolerance policy" for future errors and will fire whomever is responsible. But they lied about that, too, and aren't firing anybody. And their defenders say that they are a legitimate news organization with integrity because...

I'm shocked! Shocked I tellz ya that Cluster Fox or any of its many pro-American hosts would be so low as to lie about something or when caught doing so, remain silent about it!

Keep up the great work Fox... WOO HOO!!

c'mon people. If Fox News fired those responsible for the lies the only thing left there would be tumbleweeds.

So Fox is betting that they go without a correction, or that a small "Beck apology" in the last 3 seconds of Fox % Friends will suffice, and the American people wouldn't care, or even notice. You know what's worse? They are going to win this bet. At this point, we know the execs at Fox think ethics are people from "Ethica." ...Is the point to allow these documented 'errors' to pile up until they are glaring? I know there isn't an agenda beyond an attempt to end dishonest journalism, but I feel unsatisfied with the lack of action... I admit, I don't offer any solutions -just my frustration with it being perfectly acceptable to have a network that acts as the propaganda arm (of the wealthiest memebers) of a very particular brand of conservativism, under the guise of breaking-news...

It's all part of the political game. Doesn't matter at this point. People who watch and believe everything Fox News says, think this really happened. Have a discussion with any of them about ACORN and Obama and this will be brought up as fact. Fox News and the Republican part now this and why they do this kind of stuff. Doesn't matter if it's later shown to be false.
