Politico reports Beck has had "his own minor tax problems"

January 08, 2010 6:23 pm ET by Media Matters staff

In a January 8 Politico article, Kenneth Vogel writes:

No one has been less forgiving than Glenn Beck when it comes to Democrats with tax problems. Not just the well-known ones like Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, but less serious ones such as Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, whose husband only recently paid off $6,400 in tax liens on his auto repair business, and Nancy Killefer, who withdrew her nomination to be White House chief performance officer, citing a $946.69 tax lien on her Washington home.

Their tax issues are just one indicator of "a culture of corruption among some of the left," Beck declared just last month in a segment on his hugely popular Fox News television show, in which he branded Geithner, Killefer, Solis and a handful of other Obama nominees "tax cheats," whom he wouldn't trust "with my children, let alone my children's future."

Mocking the excuses offered by the nominees, Beck sarcastically intoned "Oh, the tax thing, it was an accident. It was my husband's fault. I didn't do it, he did it. I didn't mean to do it. I was just working hard for the people."

So what to make, then, of the fact that Beck has had his own minor tax problems over the past few years?

Vogel goes on to write that Beck's production company, Mercury Radio Arts, "has at times struggled to keep up with the heightened tax and filing demands accompanying his success."

Vogel writes:

In October 2007, New York City issued a tax warrant against Mercury Radio Arts, indicating that the company had been penalized $10,927.49 for overdue 2006 general corporation taxes, and still owed $7,111.03, according to documents obtained by POLITICO.

The source with knowledge of the situation explained the issue "arose during the process of the company's transition from Philadelphia to New York" in 2006 - after Beck began hosting a daily news and commentary television show on CNN's Headline News - and was "immediately addressed." Two weeks after the warrant was issued, New York City released it, indicating in a filing obtained by POLITICO that the debt was satisfied.

The source said Mercury's relocation also resulted in confusion over the company's unemployment insurance, culminating in the New York State Workers Compensation Board in July 2007 issuing a judgment obtained by POLITICO assessing an $8,250 fine against Mercury for failure to carry workers' compensation insurance from March 31, 2006 through February 25, 2007.

But, less than three months later, the board issued a notice indicating that the "judgment has been fully satisfied." And board spokesman Brian Keegan explained that the board rescinded the penalty after determining that Mercury had carried the appropriate insurance since it began doing business in New York in 2005 and that Mercury's insurance carrier had merely failed to submit proof of coverage to the board.

Like there are not millions of people in this country who can keep track of our over sized tax code. Not that I am a Beck fan. But come on. This could fit five million people in any given year. Is it only important if your a celebrity.

      Wait a minute.

Glenn Beck is a TV personality. And this article is comparing his actions with those of prominent Obama Administration officials. In one case, this article is comparing this TV personality to the head of the Treasury Department -- the division of the federal government charged with the collection of taxes!

Beck is speaking truth to power, and bringing important topics to light -- and this article's brilliant analysis is to instead criticize Beck?!! Talk about shooting the messenger.

Mr. Vogel should ask himself if his own life would bear similar scrutiny. This is an outrageous criticism and the author should hang his head in shame.

So it's safe to say we can just add this to the growing list of items that Beck gets on peoples cases for, yet does himself... And he wonders why (logical) people don't take him seriously.

Oops! It sounds like, similar to the cases with some of the nominees, he also took care of his tax issues.

So Beck really didn't do anything, and wasn't even fined?

Nice headline. Not misleading at all...

Glenn Beck is a corrupt tax cheat by his own unreasonably strict standards. That's the trouble with being such a nitpicker. You end up exposing your own hypocrisy.

Wait a second. I'm all for going after the truth and exposing hypocrites, but this doesn't prove that Glenn Beck is cheating his taxes. It doesn't even prove that he is bad at filing his taxes. All it proves is that the company he worked for is bad at filing their taxes. Honestly, its comparable to saying that a janitor who works for AIG is fudging numbers on his taxes or cheating on his taxes. Let's be a little fair here. Glenn Beck might be a loon or neo-con nut job, but this article is reaching rather far.

could someone please call glenn beck on his red phone and ask him to pay the thousands of dollars in back taxes?

i mean, the forefathers were against hypocritical millionaires who try to cheat the government. also, the forefathers were really against excuses like, it was a simple mistake, or it was a minor infraction--i think you get the point.

yall tell beck he can't pluck the speck out of geitner's eye when he has a beam of his own.

I do the taxes for my family. When it is done, I take great satisfaction in the finished form, but I cuss and fuss my way through it (but less than my husband). It can be very difficult to fill out tax forms. I was patient with the nominees who had tax problems, because I struggle with getting it right. Glennie, however thinks he is special and above the rules. He is unforgiving of the tax problems of others, but has his own. He rakes people of the coals for things said and done 15 years ago, but ignores his own worse behavior. Someone gets angry and slurs words, and they are drunk in public. Someone retires after 35 years in office and it is so they can go bar crawling. But, Glenn is above being held accountable for his actions because he tells you he was a drunk and he's better now.

I'm a small business owner owner, who has to collect sales tax. I'm always dismayed at how it is usually progressive people or government employed people, who want to avoid paying the sales tax. That tends to be the typical hypocrisy of the left, they want the government to run everything, but then they themselves want to be exempt from paying for it or obeying the rules they want placed on everyone else. If Beck isn't paying his fair share at least, it would follow his belief of less government and less taxes!
