LA Times: Fox drops the ball in Haiti coverage

January 15, 2010 9:19 am ET by Media Matters staff

From a January 15 LA Times article by James Rainey:

Why dwell on one of our closest hemispheric neighbors in its hour of dire need, when -- like both Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck -- you can conduct prolonged, frothy promotional interviews with Fox's newest contributor, Sarah Palin?

Why focus on all that misery, if, like Hannity on Wednesday, you can engage conservative virago Michelle Malkin in a soaring conversation about the Obama administration's "culture of corruption."

Bill O'Reilly played his no-Haiti card too, managing a gripping discussion Wednesday with Bo Derek about the threat to the West's wild horses. Not to mention those whales being hunted by the Japanese in the Southern Ocean.

Cable operator MSNBC couldn't match CNN's boots-on-the-rubble immediacy either. NBC anchor Brian Williams, morning host Ann Curry and others were holed up at the Port-au-Prince airport Wednesday evening because of security concerns, before getting into the city Thursday to cover the story more directly.

But at least the cable affiliate did its best to tell the story from outside the epicenter. It dedicated more than two hours to the quake in its three major prime-time shows, compared with less than seven minutes presented by Fox's biggest stars Wednesday night, according to the liberal media watchdog, Media Matters.

...according to the liberal media watchdog, Media Matters.

Thank you, LA Times, for your promotion of Media Matters as a trusted source. The folks who work here do a great job at rounding up and showcasing all the, ahem, misinformation that comes down the media pike. That they also provide a forum for people like me to express their opinions about it is icing on the cake.

For the troll who seemed surprised that I would use MMfA as a source, it seems I am not alone in. Mainstream publications also report on what Media Matters says.

FOX Propaganda? Your fellow media outlets are not above pointing out when you have failed, as the LA Times demonstrates. At some point, Mr. Murdoch is going to realize he could be making more money with a different format, so if I worked at FOX, I'd be polishing up my resume.

fox news' format is 24 hour cable news... what format should murdoch change to, smooth jazz?... their ratings are more than double that of cnn and msnbc combined, which means they can charge their advertisers more than the competition does... so why should they change, and to what?...

i could be wrong, but i suspect you might mean giving liberal or so called progressive pundits their own shows... i don't know murdoch's political ideology, perhaps he's a conservative, but his business ideology is profit... and if liberal talk shows made money, air america would not have filed for bankruptcy and ultimately sold, and liberal talk radio would be more successful in general...

as for fox news' employees updating their resumes, i don't know what's happening off-camera... but on-camera there has been more attrition from other networks to fox news than away from...

O'Reilly was 'covering' it last night, looked like a kid being made to eat broccoli the whole time. Guess what? The destruction is Clinton's fault because the money spent there for reconstruction was obviously wasted or stolen. Crowley actually said (paraphrasing) 'We've been stuffing that rathole with money for a long time.'

Thought a few of those nuggets would show up here.

Obviously it is up to the individual networks to make there own decisions on what "news" that they want to cover. So if Fox made the decision to not cover the Haiti story, that is their business.

What I find telling is that Bill'O is obviously a liberal environmentalist.

Bill O'Reilly played his no-Haiti card too, managing a gripping discussion Wednesday with Bo Derek about the threat to the West's wild horses. Not to mention those whales being hunted by the Japanese in the Southern Ocean.

Hey, Charles Lindbergh was a great voice for environmental causes--in fact, it was one of his only notable pursuits after WWII. At the same time, he was a horrific anti-semitic Nazi-adoring right-wing nutcase. These things happen sometimes.

Swet, I got a "thumbs down".

Not sure why, since there isn't a negative comment.
Or, at least, I don't take PLRL as a negative comment.

Bilbo... we gave "thumbs down" for your 'Bill O'Reilly was obviously a liberal environmentalist'. Huh?

There should be "NO" excuses for FoxNews "NOT" reporting the generous help that America and other Countries have done for Haiti during the first 72 Hours - period. My goodness, Numerous Countries from around the World help Haiti and America led the effort. This is HUGE!!!

Instead, FoxNews did their usual thing of attacking Pres. Obama and Democrats during these trying times in Haiti as "NEWS" about Haiti scrolled at the bottom of the screen. Umph, umph, umph. Just "shameful".

No Smarshall-Fox did a lot of reporting on the Haiti tragedy-most of the morning when I was watching.

Don't know why someone gave you a thumbs-down; I wrote what I did merely to buttress your point. In any event, here's a thumbs-up from me to be fair and balanced.

By the way, it's PLRR, but it's no swet if it gets done wrong.

They're just doing what Rush tells them to do as usual. If Rush says no one should donate money to Haiti, then who is ClusterF0X to cover this tragedy?

      See the connection here?

Rush tried to claim today that he had NOT asked people to not donate to Haiti - he said that he hadn't said (hint - he did) and then he tried to say that he simply said that people shouldn't donate to "Obama" (?) since he's going to take away the charitable deduction on income tax. Well, how do you 'contribute to charity' in any way besides a way that would qualify for a charitiable deduction?

Fox News will cover it much more as soon as they figure out how to tie ACORN into it, or leverage a way to show Obama mishandling the relief effort.

No, not at 2am in the morning, the LA times was specifically talking about the coverage by Hannity, Beck and O'Reilly. They were clear about that. They even stated exactly when they were talking about and how much time Fox Spews devoted to the coverage...

"...less than seven minutes presented by Fox's biggest stars Wednesday night..."

        But thanks for coming out.

If you watch Fox news, that is one thing. But, if you watch Fox where all the talkers are, there is a long, long line of those "talkers" bad-mouthing Haiti, Obama, and anyone whose compassion is directed to the sad folks in Haiti. Not sure if this attitude stems from Haiti's racial population or just what. But during this disaster, whatever their excuse, it is just an excuse not a good reason and it is unGodly for sure.

Sitting home with a cold on this Saturday night and while CNN & MSNBC are covering Haiti, Fox is talking about tax returns & infomercials. Have they no shame? I bet if Haitians were white they would be covering it.
