The Republican wins, even if he loses

January 18, 2010 10:22 am ET by Jamison Foser

Washington Post reporter Chris Cillizza calls tomorrow's Massachusetts Senate election for Republican Scott Brown:

Cambridge, MA: I still think Coakley wins this race by 8+ points and the story is marginalized post-election. The voter ID for Dems is just too large and this national attention has woken up MA residents. ...

Chris Cillizza: Great minds!

I am not sure I agree on Coakley -- solely because the race has been so unpredictable to this point -- but I think that no matter what happens on Tuesday you have a clear winner and a clear loser already.

Winner: Scott Brown. His candidacy has shocked the political world so even if he comes up short he will be touted for any and all open office in the state. One potential option: Coakley's attorney general post.

No word yet on how a Brown loss would be good news for Rudy Giuliani.

Well... Not really. No one is going to lose here because some unrealisticaly rightward-leanging tea-baggers got a thrid party candidate to come in and split the conservtaive vote.

        -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Coakley should be able to win there w/o the tea-bagger's "help."

Isn't there a guy with the last name Kennedy running under a conservative, 'independent,' party identification? I think he could be a spoiler, albeit, not as popular as Hoffman was in NY-23...

Personally I think it's despicable that this guy Kennedy is running for Teddy's old seat. It's straight out of The Distinguished Gentleman...

Here's a prediction that you can actually count on:

The people of Mass. will get the representation they deserve. If they feel that 6 years of representation by someone who more closely shares Kennedy's policies isn't worth a couple hours out of 1 day to go to the polls, then the fanatics can put their boy in there and the Mass. citizens can enjoy 6 years of representation by someone who more closely shares Bush and Cheney's policies.

It would just be unitl the end of the term, but the point still holds, especially with the health care debate / vote as close as it is.

The trouble is that the REST OF US will be stuck with Brown if MA doesn't come through. But I think they wll. The media is blowing this way out of proportion. They always do, for Republicans.

Agreed. If Brown wins, the Democrats might as well take the rest of the year off; nothing... I mean NOTHING will get done. That is, unless the Democrats grow a pair and figure out a way to pass legislation with 51 votes... but I don't see that happening.

Actually, with the insurance mandate and without the public option, I don't care if this passes or not. It's nat a BAD bill, but it's far from a GOOD one. But if it does fail, the Democrats should make a frickin' biopic out of every single person that gets screwed over by their insurance comapany. And they ought to start reminding people what the Limbaugh's, Beck's and Coulter's of the wold MAKE in terms of INCOME. At $30+ Million a year in income, I wouldn't wory about health care costs either! It's shameful how the media - all of the media - has covered this debate.

Shameful is too generous; I would consider it negligent or even criminal. They were so in love with the Jerry-Springer atmosphere at the Teabagging Town Hall meetings that they portrayed it as a spontaneous national movement. In fact, it was a small minority of well-funded Troglodytes shouting down the majority.

Healthcare reform has been torpedoed by a witch's brew of Media incompetence and special interest bribes to Congress.

And, sadly, millions of Americans can be suckered into supporting the special interests, and trashing their own interests. Not just half-heartedly screwing themselves, but enthusiastically.

I've seen more than one poster here fooled into thinking the Mass. race represents some sea change in American opinion (at least, as long as Brown is polling well), and that the election of another obstructionist elite will mean victory for the average American.

                  This morning, I saw this "status" on the social network site page of a wingnut acquaintance (she is below the median income, I'm pretty sure);

                  Go Massachussetts !!!

This is sort of a side-issue, but the health care "reform" bill is a VERY bad one, and needs to die a quick and brutal death, at this point. Rahm Emanuel said not to worry about the liberals, just cut some sort of deal, we'll call it "reform" and declare victory, and that's exactly what played out. The Senate bill, which is what the final one is going to look like, does nothing to control costs, allows insurance companies to openly collaborate and fix prices, requires people to carry insurance, and has no public option. By eliminating rescissions, pre-existing conditions, and all the other mechanisms by which the insurance industry guarantees ever-expanding profits, this will cause already-obscene premiums to soar right out of sight, while a mandate is foisted upon us that "solves" the health care crisis in exactly the same way a law requiring everyone to own a home would solve the homelessness problem.

There will be market controls on cost. The addition on young healthy people to the health insurance rolls will spread the burden and reduce cost. The insurance industry did not run their companies like a business by reducing premiums to attract young healthy customers to spread the burden.Instead they depended on their republican, and so-called conservatives in congress for more government subsidy with-out regulation. If the insurance, and medical industry takes the USA people money, the USA people should make some rules on what they do with our money. Are you saying it is better for the USA to continue to give the insurance and medical industry 100's $billions of $dollars with the USA people having no say so about what they do with that money. The same medical industry that will take everything you own for a very grossly over priced bill that you could not pay.A bill the government paid with a grant for the bills people could not pay.President Obama is trying to give you a USA citizen a voice about how that money is spent.A Herculean task because of the millions spent by those who benefit$$$$$ on a propaganda effort to protect their billions. It is effective proof being how people like you have been fooled. The propaganda even has people thing going against this will protect jobs.Got people believing buying insurance across state lines will lower cost. What is the difference in buying insurance from big insurance Omaha headquarters or their Alabama office???Duh!!Profits the insurance, and medical industry makes are not increased by paying employees more or being more generous with benefits. In the real world it does, but not in the business model used by the insurance and medical industry, today.A very large percentage of insurance companiy profits are shiped out of the USA.

"There will be market controls on cost. The addition on young healthy people to the health insurance rolls will spread the burden and reduce cost." That thinking is beyond wishful. Especially without removing the anti-trust exemptions currently enjoyed by the insurance companies. "Market Forces" isn't some magical incantation that answers all objections. First, the insurance companies are so protected that they don't have to face market pressures, second, the so-called market forces pretty much cease to exert any pressure when there's a mandate to buy the product.

Brown is a blip on the radar screen. When the blip gets into the right wing echo chamber it becomes a nova. After he loses, he becomes a blip again. Certainly the Republicans will exploit his raised profile. But losing is losing. Brown was not helped by "calling out" President Obama and telling him to "stay out" of the race, as if this Senate seat is not critical to Obama's ability to pass his agenda. Brown is yet another brainless pretty boy propped up to do the dirty work for wealthy power-brokers who couldn't possibly get elected to anything.

I hate these stories. Even if Brown loses he wins? What have we heard from that guy in NY who lost, and was considered a winner, if he lost? We haven't heard diddly squat from him SINCE he lost, and it would probably be the same for Brown, although, he will probably land some sort of gig on FoxNews, or maybe head up the Tea Party Express, or some other such craziness.

Look, if Brown loses, he LOSES! The republicans don't win anything if he loses. This is just ridiculous.

We need more fantasy white wing lies to balance things out.

It has LITERALLY gotten to that point in the media.

When Guiliani said there were not domestic terror attacks on Bush's watch, NOBODY was saying, YOU LIE! CNN was getting a Republican and a Democrat to debate that without taking sides. That is why I don't watch CNN anymore!

Massachusetts is one of America's great liberal bastions. The state has not sent a Republican to the Senate since 1972. Given that Brown was a relative unknown it was hardly surprising that Coakley at one point had a thirty point lead in the polls.

And yet in just two months Brown has managed to pull ahead of Coakley by making opposition to Obama's healthcare plan his signature issue. Even if Brown loses the election his campaign has profound implications for politics in this country. Every Blue Dog Democrat is going to be wondering if Brown could gain so much traction in Massachusetts, then what electoral fate might await them in their more conservative districts? No matter what the results there will be some serious second thoughts among Democrats come Tuesday night.

Make no mistake, Media Matters understands this as well as anyone else and that's why they're creating distractions such as monitoring Glenn Beck's Haiti coverage with a stopwatch.
