Glenn Beck wants you to be stupid

January 26, 2010 1:40 pm ET by Simon Maloy

Glenn Beck is a man promising education but peddling ignorance. It's a characteristic of most accomplished propagandists, whose offerings of "truth" are ugly distortions and lies barely covered by a thin veneer of fact. Beck, however, has grown aggressively mendacious in defense of his anti-intellectual and counterfactual retellings of history.

On his show last night, Beck attacked the Politico for quoting a slew of actual historians dismissing Beck's documentary, "Revolutionary Holocaust," and its attempts to link the progressive movement to the worst communist atrocities of the 20th century as inaccurate, ahistorical, and "a complete lie." Beck defended himself by attacking the "eggheads" and attempting to explain why he was right to tie progressives to genocide:

BECK: Now, obviously, a point can be made that totalitarianism starts with the government inserting itself into more and more aspects of our lives, right? But the underlying point here I made in the documentary -- and please, try to keep up, Alan, in our alternative universe -- the right is continually associated with Nazis. That seems perfectly fine with all the egg-heads in this country. Unfortunately, that is the lie that we are exposing. And it's, by the way, again, not the Democrats. It's the progressives on the lefts -- on the left. They have been excusing and defending brutal dictators from the beginning. The reason the progressive movement went underground in the first place was all of their failed policies that America has rejected back in the turn of the last century.

And then also, they also had a problem. They kept supporting all these evil dictators around the world. Progressives -- like we showed you on Friday -- George Bernard Shaw couldn't hide his admiration for the dictators. Watch.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW, IRISH PLAYWRIGHT: Now Signor Mussolini cannot take it off. He is condemned although he is a most amiable man. He is condemned to go through life with that terrible and imposing expression which really does a great deal of injustice to his kindly nature.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: To his kindly -- he is talking about Mussolini. Shaw gave us a great insight into what the progressives do. He talked about Mussolini's scary look. Right before that part, he said, you know, Mussolini looks like this, a little scary. And can look like that, too, but I can look happy, too. But Mussolini is condemned to always look like that.

He wanted America to know that he could look scary, but he really wasn't. After it became abundantly apparent to the world, the sheer evil that these people were supporting, progressives realized -- as George Bernard Shaw demonstrated on camera -- that they had to change the scary face. Not the policies, the scary face.

There are a couple of things to address here:

"The reason the progressive movement went underground in the first place was all of their failed policies that America has rejected back in the turn of the last century." This is comically false. Rather than going "underground," the progressive movement was ascendant at the turn of the 20th century. The first three presidents elected in the 20th century -- Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson -- were all, to varying degrees, reformers who enacted progressive policies at the national level (Taft being the least ambitious of the three, Roosevelt the most). The progressive movement reached its zenith in 1912 when Roosevelt reemerged on the political scene as the firebrand head of the Progressive Party and finished second in that year's election with 88 electoral votes and 27 percent of the popular vote, the best showing ever by a third party in an American presidential election.

"They kept supporting all these evil dictators around the world. Progressives -- like we showed you on Friday -- George Bernard Shaw couldn't hide his admiration for the dictators." George Bernard Shaw was an author, playwright, polemicist, and eugenics-supporting lunatic. He was also an avowed socialist, which, despite Beck's insistence to the contrary, is not the same as a progressive. The American progressive movement actually presented itself as an alternative to socialism. As University of Kansas professor of politics Sidney Milkis wrote:

The Progressive Party's millennial celebration of direct rule of the people was not reactionary, as [socialist leader Eugene] Debs and other social democrats alleged. Yet it beheld a program of reform that sought to preserve the dignity of the democratic individual. Emphasizing the candidate instead of the party, the Progressives deflected attention from class conflict. Seeking to build a welfare state that was sustained by pubic opinion rather than through a social democratic party, it emphasized individual political action. [Theodore Roosevelt, the Progressive Party, and the Transformation of American Democracy, University of Kansas Press, 2009. Page 24]

Needless to say, Shaw's views were not representative of the progressive movement.

Then Beck really went off the rails:

BECK: Last week on radio, we were talking about the Beatles song, "Revolution." I really listened to the words of this and I got to tell you something, the Beatles spells it -- they spell it all out. And it's all about understanding how progressives have been operating.

[...]

BECK: The Beatles knew. They knew, opening and defending Mao, or attacking the Constitution would be suicidal. You can't change it. You can't have a revolution. But you can make the Constitution evolve. You can make it a -- what is it progressives said around the turn of the century -- a living document! Evolution. Evolution, not revolution -- slowly, step-by-step.

Beck was serious. He was, in all earnestness, using a rock song as evidence of the perfidy of the American progressive movement. This isn't just wrong, it's a deliberate and malicious thumb to the eye of serious scholars of history. He's telling his audience not just that the people who actually know what they're talking about are wrong, he's telling them they'll be better informed if they listen to the freaking White Album.

Don't count out Beck's influence. While we may think Fox is stupid, they know what they are doing.

These people are backed by professional propaganda operatives.

They are so stupid that they won Ted Kennedy's seat.

Maybe not so stupid after all.

You're absolutely right. FOX is not stupid; its viewers are. FOX and Hate Radio are the culmination of a concerted propaganda effort the Republicans have been working on for decades. Rush Limbaugh was their greatest creation, and he worked tirelessly for years making "Liberal" a dirty word.

Now that Liberals have tucked tail and retreated to the word "Progressive", Glenda Beck has been enlisted by the same people to demonize that word. He no more believes this drivel that we do, but he's paid millions to pretend that he does.

They know what they're doing, all right.

Stupid doesn't describe it all. You need to all fearful, scared of any change in their "Leave it to Beaver" worldview and bigoted. Glenn and Fox feeds on this need that there viewers need the "truth" that fits their narrow definitions.

Again with the Beatles. Since when were the Beatles political leaders? And how in hell does he interpret the single mention of Mao in Revolution as defending Mao? The line is "If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao/You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow." That seems clearly to be anti-Maoist. It seems to be saying anyone who follows Mao will be reviled. How is that pro-Mao?

But he's got a song by an English band from 40 years ago, and some quotes from an Irish playwright from sometime in the past not specified.

You guys really don't get how pertinent that is to 21st century progressives in America ?

I think that, except to those ignorant enough to already be taking Beck seriously, the two supporting examples he's chosen pretty much scream "I got nuthin' !"

Just read that Beck has surpassed O'Reilly in the Harris "most liked" television personality. Beck's #2 and O'Reilly is #10. Apparently, there is trouble in paradise because O'Reilly is majorly PO'd! LOL!!!! Who do you think will be getting bumped???? That reminds me, I wanted to give BilldO a little credit for showing something rare among far rightys, a sense of humor.

I caught the end of his show a week or so ago, the part where he reads emails to The Factor. He was sporting enough to feature one from a viewer who wrote that he was thinking about buying tickets to the O'Reilly/ Beck Bold fresh Tour, but he had already seen Dumb & Dumber.

More evidence that Beck has more in common with Charles Manson then any proffessional journalist, historian, or really anyone serious about exposing the truth. He would rather sit back and listen to the White Album waxing conspiratorial about the world, inciting people to recognize and act upon his vision of the world... It wouldn't be unreasonable to say he is "peacefully encouraging violence" against those he has branded as a threat, in his helter-skelter reality... He is one crazy 9-12er away from truly becoming Manson. I fear the violence he encourages, yet I could see him ending up just like Manson, the craziest guy on cell block 4.

I see Beck as more as Hitler reincarnated. Take a lie, make it big enough and get the "down trodden" to believe that you have their best welfare at heart. Once in power, tear apart the very fabric of society.

Beck is dangerous. He may be a joke to those who can think, but it doesn't make him any less dangerous because he appeals to the primal fears of those who won't or can't think for themselves.

A hopeless Beck fan, I know, who is disabled and stuck at home, adores Beck.

He was so upset on Monday, that he was on the verge of hysteria, and tears. Threatening to sell his house to a Mexican Drug Dealer (Fox News) and go out in the street and get run over by a car.

Beck is a dangerous dangerous man. You can see Hannity and others picking up the milder talking points for reinforcement.

I guess this sort of explains why Beck has adopted the character of the wacky history teacher. He needs to go back 40 years to a song he doesn't understand, and 80 years to a foreigner's unrelated remarks, to build his case for the imminent dangers of Progressivism.

I think this really is a dangers situation they are making
this is how the brown shirts started fist publicly accuse the enemy then publicly taunt and harass your enemy the wipe out your enemy beck may not know history to well but I do and fox news is either intentionally or unintentionally following the footsteps of many violent political movements that where inherently xenophobic, ultra nationalistic, religiously & socially radical “for or against” and ignorant by choice if you look closely the tea party ultra right movement has all these characteristics to the extent that violence looks only 2 steps away
Plus beetles songs really? “helter skelter” anyone this is why I think the extreme right is so bad they don’t believe any of what they say so that implies another reason to say and do things that have deep and well documented historical ties to violence and racism

I tried to watch a few minutes of his show last evening. He started right in on attacking the people who didn't fall enthralled in adoration at his feet because he labored hard and produced a resounding fart of a documentary-loud, stinky, and a lot of hot air. He was really ugly about it, too. I couldn't stand it and left after five minutes. One of the videos he played by G.B. Shaw, was from the early days of Mussolini's time in power, he hadn't done anything really reprehensible yet, but somehow, Shaw is supposed to know that he WILL do something. Well, I am pretty sure that Glenn will do something reprehensible, too. I don't know what it is just yet, but he will do something, and I want it on record that I never liked him or found him charming, or defended him from any of the criticism he so richly deserves.

I'm going on record with you, too: I never liked the guy, always thought he was up to no good. It won't shock me at all when one of his Kool-Aid drinkers does something horrible to some politician or other. It wouldn't even shock me if it turned out that a big-name Republican gets caught in the line of fire of Glenn's "anti-government" movement (conveniently while a Democrat is in office), as we've already seen the Tea-Baggers beginning to target them as part of the problem. I mean, John McCain's being challenged as "too progressive"! Huh?!

So yeah, if his followers do something stupid, like elect him or something, I'd like to disavow myself of anything to do with the lot of them.

      Dear Glenn:

"Revolution" was about John Lennon telling the 'new left' to take a hike and stop asking him for money for their cause. Later on he relented and began association with them, but when "Revolution" was written he was still in his trancendental meditation phase. "If you want money for people with minds that hate/all I can tell you brother is you'll have to wait."

All you Beck supporters should ask yourselves, what is the point of all this?

If you take Beck at face value, our country is filled with millions of dangerous traitors and totalitarian sympathizers. Also many of our closest allies are loaded with fascist totalitarians. The only remedy would be some kind of national purification and international isolation.

Imagine our country purified of progressives and liberals a la Beck. Essentially our national politics would be entirely comprised of debates among conservatives. Our democratically elected representatives would be limited in how they can solve problems, due to the ideological purity required. Any kind of collectivist action, even those with democratic support will be off the table. It will be like flying with only one wing.

Not suprisingly, this seems to be the vision of many modern conservatives: To make our country unable to produce anything but conservative solutions and automatically thwarting any non-conservative politicians.

Many people in our country will only accept conservative solutions and conservative politicians. They can not accept that this country is filled with citizens with different ideas and different strategies who STILL ACCEPT DEMOCRATIC VALUES!

You don't see an active movement on the left to deny the legitimacy of conservative values and representation. Beck might like to wallow in the victim role, but there are no systematic attempts to deny the legitimacy of conservative politics. Liberals don't pretend that this isn't a country with conservative people and traditions.
