O'Keefe reportedly arrested by FBI in alleged "plot to wiretap" senator's office

January 26, 2010 3:36 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a January 26 Times-Picayune article:

The FBI, alleging a plot to wiretap Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in downtown New Orleans, arrested four people Monday, including James O'Keefe, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group's credibility.

FBI Special Agent Steven Rayes alleges that O'Keefe aided and abetted two others, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan, who dressed up as employees of a telephone company and attempted to interfere with the office's telephone system.

A fourth person, Stan Dai, was accused of aiding and abetting Basel and Flanagan. All four were charged with entering fedral property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.

So, in light of this development that proves O'Keefe puposefully violated Acorn employees rights, Congress will naturally rescind the resolutions they passed condemning ACORN. Right?

Which I believe a Democratic Congressman said from the start.

And I believe the Republicans who are supposedly in favor of limited government fully supported the unlawful bill of attainder despite that warning.

I think the main problem was that a bill banning government funding to "any organization that has broken the law" would basically force the defunding of the entire military industrial complex.

Like some white dude in Utah at a high school pimps and whoooo-ers party - it was just comically bad. He thinks he's Gordon Liddy? Fine. Don't think there are any video recording statutes. To my knowledge, those states have wiretap/surreptitious audio recording statutes. Video is brought in if sound is also captured in the recording (as it was with the ACORN videos). Correct if mistaken.

I wouldn't call it a "victory". O'Keefe is afraid to step outside of Fox "News" studios to do an interview - other than that one time Katie Couric mistook O'Keefe for Elmo, but that doesn't really count.

In all seriousness. I don't see it as a "victory" when a right-wing fool foists himself on his own petard - although it is very tempting. It just seems like schadenfreude.

The main telephone room was located in a GAO office, which is Federal as well. When the two "telephone guys" were asked for their credentials, they replied that they "left them in the car". (Lol. Just like high school kids trying to buy beer!) As you can imagine, that's when things really started to fall apart. They were so stupid, they had no plan for what to do if asked for ID. What idiots!

Two: How could the ACORN employee NOT know he was messing with her, if that outfit in the headline is what he was wearing. Is he kidding? Did he really think pimps walked around like that? haha.

Three: Why did they go after THIS particular Senator? Is there something in her resume or voting record?
