Beck, Ailes lie about Beck's "slaughtered" comments

February 02, 2010 2:29 am ET by Christine Schwen

Glenn Beck took to the airwaves today to follow-up Roger Ailes' falsehood-laden defense of him with falsehood-laden defense of his own.

On Sunday's This Week, Ailes told Arianna Huffington that when Beck insisted the White House and progressives are "taking you to a place to be slaughtered" that he was simply "talking about Hitler and Stalin slaughtering people."

This blatantly false interptation of Beck's remarks means one of two things: either Ailes does not watch Beck's show or Ailes is lying.

Here was Beck in November:

BECK: They need to do it this way. They need it do it in the cover of darkness. They need you to not to listen to me -- because if you start to listen to me, you're never going to willingly give up your freedom. You're going to be nudged into it, and if they can't nudge you into it, well then they'll push you into it.

What was it that Andy Stern just said a minute ago?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

STERN: We're trying to use the power of persuasion. And if that doesn't work, we'll use the persuasion of power because there are governments and there are opportunities to change laws that affect these companies.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

STERN: We took names. We watched how they voted. We know where they live.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: Yes, they do know where I live. They know where you live, too. All they need is that final emergency, and it's going to come creeping up. We didn't realize it was this bad. Mark my words. No, don't mark my words -- mark the words of George Soros or anyone else around this White House. Play Soros' words again!

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SOROS: The system we have now has actually broken down, only we haven't quite recognized it. And so, you need to create a new one, and this is the time to do it.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: These are the people that broke the system! It's broken because of corruption.

Look, this is not about the things that you and I believe in. Progressives think they know better than you do. They want to control every aspect of your life. Workers of America unite against these people!

The smart grid is not about saving energy or helping the planet. It is about one person, the rich guy, paying more than another guy, the poor guy. He'll pay less!

They call it social justice. They call it fair. They call it -- they call it anything but what it is, Marxism, spreading the wealth, leveling out the playing field.

There is one thing you cannot call any of these plans. You can't call it America. You can't do it.

I told you yesterday buckle up your seatbelt, America. Find the exit. There is one here, here and here. Find the exit closest to you and prepare for a crash-landing because this plane is coming down because the pilot is intentionally steering it into the trees! Most likely, it will happen sometime after Christmas.

You are going to see this economy come up -- we're already seeing it - - and now it's going to start coming back down again. And when you see the effects of what they're doing to the economy, remember these words: we will survive. We know we'll do better than survive. We will thrive -- as long as these people are not in control. They are taking you to a place to be slaughtered. [emphasis added]

And that certainly wasn't the only time Beck used violent rhetoric and warned of "danger" from Obama and progressives.

Not content to let his boss do the heavy lifting, Beck mounted his own defense of his violent rant: he flat out denied it.

BECK: I don't even know if I've ever used the word "slaughtered." And if I used the word "slaughtered," if it wasn't in a context of Mao, Stalin, or Hitler, it was in the idea that the truth is being slaughtered by this administration, not saying that this administration is going to slaughter anyone. [...] I have said that progressives, this ideology has lead to the slaughtering of millions. It has, it has. In particular: eugenics.

As Huffington, Crooks and Liars, and Brave New Films all clearly noted today, that's just not the case.

With these assertions, and O'Reilly's recent defense of his colleague, it raises the question: Does anyone on Fox (including Beck himself) watch Beck's show?

And if they do, is there any length they won't go to in order to defend him?

I honestly believe Ailes doesn't watch Beck's show.

He's like a defense attorney who doesn't really want to know whether his client is innocent, because then he wouldn't be able to speak with such certainty when defending him.

Beyond that, Beck's show is simply unwatchable.

It's amazing... I can disagree with him COMPLETELY and yet use these EXACT SAME WORDS. CLASSIC projection.

It doesn't disturb me that Glennie and Roger are liars. What disturbs me is that people who watch Fox will believe these lies, even if you played them the tapes, they will still believe we are being unfair to Glennie. As to Roger not watching Glennie, well, would you if you didn't have to? I try but only manage about 15 minutes.

it disturbs me that the Beckerheads who follow this guy actually think that he cares about their interests.the broad interests of many of those fans of Fox and the other right wing pundits, are of little concern to those pundits.it amazes me that someone with substandard health care can be fooled into thinking that the guy who wants to deny them better care is their champion

Now that's impressive. 15 minutes? Usually takes me only 2 before I'm getting ready to lose the contents of my stomach and have to switch channels back to something more in tune with reality, like the sci-fi channel or professional wrestling.

Among the many thing I fault Roger Ailes for is irresponsibly providing air time to a sick and disturbed man named Glenn Beck who promotes a wildly paranoid view of America to a slew of gullible people.

I wonder why Roger The Hut felt compelled to trundle out of his cave and appear on television this past weekend? Will he be forced to appear again to defend his network's complicity in the O'Keefe "prank"? Some are saying...

Now that was offensive. Comparing Jabba to Roger Ailes is insulting to sluglike intergalactic gangsters everywhere.

Ailes: "Fox is in the ratings business."

I assume he'll be changing the operation's name to "Fox Ratings."

Ailes and others like him only respect one thing: money. He doesn't even care about power, which he names "politics". The problem is, as Paul Krugman pointed out, that people make decisions about the future based on false and misleading information provided by Fox News. In these critical times for America, Ailes should be using his influence to heal an plan for the future instead of dividing and driving the country down a dead end road.

They are taking you to a place to be slaughtered. Wow, how dumb are you all? SO using the word "slaughtered" to use as an example about the economy. I would like a list of words from you all on the left we can not longer use. Sounds like word Policing

This isn't about policing what he says, but don't you think Beck ought to own up to this rhetoric. It is malicious fear-mongering and that kind of talk only fuels the hate. Instead he outright denies he ever said anything to the like.

Beck's comments are frequently inflammatory. He rants and shouts and urges his viewers to action. So it is extremely important what action he proposes. When he accuses his opponents of violence, that is precisely the action he urges. Aside from that, his accusation of "slaughter" is a flat-out lie. Ailes knows what Beck is saying but doesn't care because, as he points out, it's about ratings and "we are winning".

You guys know he was talking about the economy and your lies wont hurt beck. I have a question for you guys tho.
How does it feel to know Beck is the second most admired tv personality behind Opra? How does it feel to know fox news is the highest and i believe the only network with a positive trust rating and that they have 4 times the viewers of any other network combined? how does it feel to know that Air America went off the air because no one listened to their hate and lies? Go to their website and read their sorry goodbye. How does it feel to know that after only one year the country is rejecting obama? HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW THAT THE COUNTRY HAS REJECTED YOU???

So one percent of the population has rejected us.
Certainly a cause for concern. They need help. I'm surprised that many can take care of themselves. Given the amount of lies they happily consume.

How does it feel to be whupped in one election cycle after another? How does it feel to have to fall back on entertainers disguised as political leaders in order to have your beliefs validated? How does it feel to know that Fox News and Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly have absolutely no sway in American elections any longer?? They do not even have any sway over Republican primaries! How does it feel to have your leaders and their chosen candidates (Giuliani, Romney) trounced by your own party? How does it feel to know that your own party rejects YOU?

This may not be an approriate question but I wonder what these "fear mongers" (hannity,limbaugh,o'reilly,coulter...)on foxs' hateful mindless blather channels if one of their listeners were to make an attempt to or assassanate the POTUS. I mean if the individual were a U.S. citizen and said they did it as a direct result of what one of thes idiots said. I mean how could they possibly defend themselves? Fox seems to have a viseral hatered for this man. I have also asked this question to liberal commentaters (olberman, matthews...)regarding bush.
