Following O'Keefe's RW logic, let's disband the Secret Service!

February 03, 2010 1:57 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

One of my favorite parts of James O'Keefe's underwhelming performance on Sean Hannity's show this week (and let's face it, if a conservative activist can't score points on Hannity's program, something's wrong), was when the host gently pressed O'Keefe about the wisdom of trying to infiltrate a U.S. senator's office.

O'Keefe's response was priceless:

Ah, the "people's office." In other words, security, schma-curity. The U.S. federal government, according to O'Keefe's take on things, should apparenlty have an open door policy when it comes to citizens stopping by unannounced for visits. In fact, it should have an open door policy for twentysomething pranksters who dress up as telephone repairmen. Or pizza delivery guys, or whatever.

Listening to O'Keefe try to spin his way out the fact that he enetered a federal building under false pretenses, the activist announced that there should be no restrictions when it comes to offices of senators, because we, the tax payers, pay their salary. As I noted last week, my guess is that sudden right-wing disdain for security woud evaporate if a a bunch of Arab-Americans got dressed up and filmed their undercover visit to the "people's office."

But let's stick with O'Keefe's unique claim that because federeal buildings and offices are the property of tax payers, than that means there should be an open door policy to wandering inside. Well, why stop at hometown offices of senators and Congressmen? I assume O'Keefe now wants all Capitol Hill offices to do away with security, right? And of course, the court houses too. I mean we pay the salaries of our judges. So why can't anybody just stroll right in?

And naturally, that clearly means the White House should tear down the gates around 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., rigth? In fact, let's lay off the entire Secret Service staff becuase, let's face it, all they really do is keep "the people" from getting to see the president; from wandering into the Oval Office. Or as O'Keefe would put it, "the people's office."

Speak truth to power, O'Keefe ! I felt the same way when the fascists at Fort Knox threw me out in the street in my Land Shark costume.... Never forget!

We forget at our own peril! A small group of thoughtful people in Land Shark and telephone repairmen costumes could change the world, with the minor exception of acts in violation of Section 1036 of Title 18 of U.S.C. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Land shark costume? That is classic. And, perhaps the next stunt for this ignorant, ill-informed young man.

The people of the United States pay for lots of things that are and need to remain secured. Would O'Keefe make an issue of being able to walk onto a military base and offer to see if the phones are broken in the commanding general's office? What about weapons storage facilities? The people pay for those, too. I work in an office that is not classified, but our customers deserve and are legally entitled to confidentiality. I have more passwords to my computer systems than I care to count. I would get in all kinds of trouble if I let just anybody sit down at my desk and play around. A Senator may have similar issues of constituent privacy. Who does O'Keefe think he is to stick his nose into the public's business. You know he would be squealing like a piggy if someone let his confidentiality out of the bag!

Yep. They'd all be whining about how we'd lost valuable intelligence by telling them they had the right to remain silent.

hey ya know i didnt think of that. you are right. some terrorist who could very well be a citizen of this country could walk right in and blow a senators office up.

well see here is the thing though. this only applies to democrats. if it was a republican there would be screaming.

"here is a thought i just had. buying jimmy's premise of landrieau's office is the peoples office. that means that i can walk into the office of my senators, governor, congressmen and the president no matter what they may be doing plop my feet up on the desk and demand they talk to me and me alone for however long i want.

yeah i can already see that working out well. just like this lame brained excuse by this moron who calls himself a journalist"-myself

its at the bottom. nice to know i wasn't the only one to think this

O'Keefe won't say that he should have done things differently in this "investigation". Hmmmm...no remorse. Are you listening, Judge?

How would Faux Gnus, Hannity, et al., treat this story if some guy named Abdulla and three of his buddies had been arrested because they lied their way into a US Senator's office? (And how would it all be Bill Clinton's fault?)

So, I work in a secure area on an Army base, and my salary is paid for by the taxpayers (THANKS GUYS!). By O'Keefe's assertion, anyone should be allowed into the compound that I work in, because hey, everyone in here is being paid by the taxpayers.

I'm pretty sure the MPs would not view this in the same way.

Come to think of it, doesn't the TSA get paid with tax dollars also? Shouldn't we all be allowed sneak into the airport? ;)

If you are a "real" american, you shouldn't have to sneak.

You would just use the entrance, at security, that is marked:
          "Real Americans Only".

I think O'Keefe needs to hire Frank Luntz's Orwellian word/ message services. This one won't fly.

This relates to an issue I have been dealing with in Arizona.
The right wing legislature has been on a tear of weakening gun restrictions lately, under the premise that having guns everywhere increases public safety.
Last week they proposed making it legal for anyone who is not a felon to carry a concealed weapon.
About the only place you can't carry a gun is into government buildings such as the State Legislature. I have been trying to figure out why, is guns increase safety, aren't Republican lawmakers demanding that guns be allowed in their workplace?
