Special Olympics' Shriver "incredulous" at Limbaugh's use of "retard"

February 05, 2010 4:08 pm ET by Media Matters staff

In a February 5 letter to Rush Limbaugh, Tim Shriver, chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, wrote that he "incredulously listened to the segment in your show in which you repeatedly and offensively used the term 'retard' in reference to our meeting with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel."

Media Matters for America documented Limbaugh's use of the term on his February 3 show. While discussing Sarah Palin's call for Emanuel's resignation for using the term, Limbaugh stated, "Our political correct society is acting like some giant insult's taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards, retards." The next day, Limbaugh claimed that he used the word "retard" only in "quoting Emanuel."

In his letter, Shriver wrote, "Our message is as simple as it is powerful: people with intellectual disabilities are human beings. Gaining social recognition of that humanity continues to be an elusive goal for them and for those who love and care about them. For centuries, they have borne the stigma of institutionalization, sterilization, social isolation, and bigotry. The names associated with them -- such as 'retarded' and 'retard' -- have for too long been used as cruel taunts."

Shiver further called on Limbaugh to join Special Olympics athlete Loretta Claiborne by "ending your use of this term and by further using your great influence and position to help others do the same."

      Dear Sarah Palin,

Rahm Emanuel had apologized prior to your public scolding of him for using the term "retarded" behind closed doors in Aug. 2009.

Rush Limbaugh has not apologized for using the term "retard" 29 times in a single segment on his radio show on Feb. 3.

Whoops, sorry. I forgot, you don't really give a crap.

      Never mind.

Yeah, it is pretty much all about Palin. She thought that this was a good chance to take a shot at another democrat, and in this case, rightfully so really. But, then again, Rahm said this behind closed doors, and not in a public venue. Doesn't make it right, but it makes it 'different' I think than Limbaugh's repeated use of the word the other day. In other words, what Limbaugh did was a LOT worse, since he is heard by millions of people on a daily basis, and how many folks heard Rahm actually say that sentence? 2? 3? Maybe 5 people? Again, I am not excusing Rahm, he should think a little before he talks. But, Palin thought, HA! I can get Rahm now! And use my son, once again, to try and make a political point.

She didn't count on Limbaugh opening his big mouth.

Now, if she doesn't condemn Limbaugh for what he said, and asks for HIS firing, she loses even more credibility in my opinion, because we now REALLY see that her commitment to fighting for people with disabilities is all a bunch of BS, and only being used to make cheap political points, instead of actually caring about it.

        That being said...

In my line of work, the contractors we often use are often comprised of a majority of disabled workers. Be it, physical disabilities, mental health disabilities, or mental disabilities, I have been consistently impressed by the work that these folks do, and also, since they're doing this work FOR the United States Army, they are, in their own way, contributing directly to supporting our troops, and they are PROUD in doing it, and they're very good at it. Compare that to what Limbaugh does for our country, and he looks foolish in comparison.

If we look a little deeper, we find that Rahm actually said "f'ing retarded". This might be offensive, but it does not actually apply the label that Rush employed - "retard". There are many types of retardation - heck, we buy clothing that is flame-retardant - but when one wields the label "retard", it leaves no doubt as to the target of the label.

I don't excuse Rahm for his statement, but I certainly find Rush' comments (and his lame "quoting Emmanuel" excuse) far more offensive.

Whether he said f'ing retarded, or just retarded, to me, it's kind of one in the same, but it is still way different than what Limbaugh was doing.

The difference is between the adjective and the noun. To call some one a "retard" (as Rush did) is far different from saying someone is "retarded". I'm not saying Rahm meant it in any politically correct way, just that "retard" leaves absolutely no question. People can be socially retarded, mentally retarded (non-PC), even physically retarded - but, the noun "retard" is used to describe people with cognitive difficulties.

True enough, I just think though that when someone calls something, like a conference room, retarded, the first "picture" folks flash to in their minds are ones of mentally disabled people, kind of, tying them together. Know what I mean?

I think this is another instance of Palin exploiting her disabled baby...

She toted him around no the campaign trail, but pawned him off on her family, constantly talking about how she decided to give birth to a handicapped child. Now she calls foul when others speak.

It reminds me of the episode of Seinfeld when the dentist converts to Judaism and Jerry claims he is only doing so for the jokes!

Absolutely it is. If she were so concerned about her child, or children for that matter, shouldn't she be at home, caring for said child/children? I mean, I knew several families in my hometown when I was growing up who had Down Syndrome kids (great kids/people by the way), and it took a LOT of individual attention, and work by those parents to care for those kids, more than regular kids for sure.

Now, Palin, being on the road, being on Fox, doing book tours, speaking engagements, and so on, how much attention is she actually paying to her children. And not just Trig, but what about the rest of the brood?

I call into question her parenting skills, or lack thereof.

But think of all that personal income that she is getting now that she doesn't have to do that pesky "actual work!" With all the money she is making now selling out everywhere, she will have more then enough to pay someone 24/7 to raise her kid for her instead of her having to do the hard work. She doesn't even need to see him at all except for the convenient photo op and to use her children as tools to attack so called "libruls." (While bowing to her God the great limbug and her religion, the great repuglican party. She can now get rich padding her personal pockets now so who cares about constituents, family, helping disabled children? No need anymore. She got hers, who cares about everybody else? (sorry for the rant)

How long before Rush finds some mouthpiece for developmentally disabled to call in his show and defend him from this "crackpot" organization, just as he found people to defend him from that awful fringe group the Anti-Defamation League and Abraham Foxman?

Shouldn't take long. Considering Rush always brags how hard it is to get through and be on his show, finding someone to defend his tasteless and thoughtless remarks is always an easy task.

Which makes you wonder exactly how callers do get through the screening on the Limbaugh show in the first place. Are they "screened" or is there another process at play in getting callers to prop up Limbaugh.....?

      Some people say...

I'm almost willing to bet that the people who "call" into the Limbaugh show don't actually call in, it's all set up. How can it not be? Everyone who calls in is a fawning fan of the great American Rush Limbaugh. I am also more than willing to bet that Rush hasn't had a single real caller for quite some time.

My point exactly. I've felt that for years. Someone hits him with a criticism and the next "caller" will be someone with "credentials" coming to Rush's defense. If it's as hard to get through to the EIB phone lines as Limbaugh claims, how come shiny gleaming defenders of specific points (phony soldiers, Jewish bankers, et al) get on the air within minutes?

True believers must have really good phone connections to EIB!

He probably has call screeners who ask questions, and those who fail the test are dropped. They would be real, but sellective. Glenn may use the same process. That may be why he freaked so badly on Cathy from Massachusetts.....he was blindsided.

There have been a couple of Limbaugh/caller exchanges on MMfA, and the modus operandi for these two is that the caller takes issue with Rush, then Rush, after a little bit of an exchange during which time he is reasonably respectful, eventually starts going off on the caller with name-calling, etc. At this point we never hear another word from the caller, and one can only assume that he/she has been cut off.

I also assume that Rush is, in essence, a thin-skinned coward.

I went to pick up a couple things at the grocery store and we paid our mortgage at the bank. I plan to bake some cookies tomorrow and not leave the house until maybe Monday morning.

You guys are giving me a chuckle. In the late 50's I was riding home from high school with my father's car pool. We were crawling through Bethesda, with traffic snarled by about an inch of snow. (Being from Albany, NY, Dad was a great snow driver.) One of the guys in the back seat finally shouted out, "Civil Defense, h*ll! This town would go belly up if the Russians f@rted*

                          Looks like things haven't changed.

Nah, definitely not, hasn't changed at all. I am from Maine originally, and I still don't get the whole go into the house and hide part of the bad weather thing going on around here. Well, actually, with this storm, I can see it, it's now 11:14 the next day, and it is STILL snowing hard out there. Now, an inch or 2, I don't think is too bad of a problem, but 20+, that is a problem for just about anyone.

I work out by Mt. Vernon, on Ft. Belvoir. If you ever see someone out near there riding a bike, give a honk and say hello.

You have guts if you bike down Rt. 1! My husband is also on Belvoir, but he is too chicken to bike. I work out in Manassas. If I see a you, I'll honk. The street in front of my house was plowed to pavement around midnight. You can't tell that now. My front walk is buried under a bush that collapsed and a tree is touching the car tops in the driveway. I have never seen this much snow come down in my life. (In Oregon, six inches is a disaster.) I figure if the cops say I shouldn't drive, I will stay inside. I don't think we will be able to go to work on Monday. Let's here it for the road crews! They are working 12 hour shifts.

Once again, Limbaugh goes over the edge, on purpose, then resorts bsck to his usual lies. And the sad thing is that he knows he is lying but his listeners, the real DeadHeads, still bow to his altar.
The rhetoric amongst these verbal entertainers has been increasingly hateful over the past years. Can't even predict how it will be prior to the 2012 Presidential Election. This year should be bad enough.
