Kurtz faithfully jots down misleading Fox attack on Maddow

February 15, 2010 2:58 pm ET by Jamison Foser

Sometimes, it's like Howard Kurtz doesn't even try to do his job.  Check out this passage from the Washington Post media critic's profile of Rachel Maddow:

[S]he rejects the notion that she's explicitly pushing for change: "I think of it more in the tradition of muckraking. A lot of the best reporting since time immemorial has been driven by outrage about things not being the way they should be, by the shock at shameless, lying hypocrisy."

She adds: "For me it's a question of whether you're doing advocacy journalism or not. It's not activism -- you see a lot of that at Fox, using news coverage to inspire political participation."

Asked for comment, a Fox spokesperson says, "These feelings that she experienced about Fox News didn't stop her from applying for a job here."

Wait, what?  A Fox spokesperson says Rachel Maddow applied for a job at Fox News?  What does that mean?  How long ago? What were the circumstances? Howard Kurtz doesn't explain; he just leaves it there.  That's more than a little odd, particularly since the claim is meant to impugn Maddow's credibility.

Fortunately, Politico's Michael Calderone finished Kurtz's job for him:

So did Maddow, former Air America host and now a star of MSNBC's liberal prime-time line-up, really apply to work at Fox News?

"I never personally applied for a job at Fox," Maddow tells POLITICO in an email. "I have an agent who I assume talks to everyone on my behalf, so I have no reason to believe that Fox's claim that they were approached on my behalf is false, even if I never knew anything about it at the time."

So ... Yeah. It doesn't exactly sound like Maddow was stopping by Fox HQ twice a week to fill out applications and ask for an interview, does it?  Actually, Maddow's version doesn't sound like anything that is typically meant by "applying for a job," which suggests that the Fox flak's statement to Kurt was quite misleading. Good thing -- for Fox, that is -- Kurtz didn't ask for an explanation.

Imagine the holy hell that would rain down if she was on Fox. Pretty funny to think about.

        You kidding?

Ailes would have fired her in 10 minutes.

I'm an avid fan of Rachel Maddow - and I can't imagine a scenario where she would even agree to a job interview with the likes of Ailes. But, boy oh boy! an interview with him for her program! - now there is an interview I wouldn't want to miss! She is so adept at calling people on their BS. hahaha - Liz Cheney won't even RESPOND to her requests for an interview

"Rhodes Scholar" Rachel. How many current faux make believe reporters are even close to that smart?
She gets her facts right, she has integrity (faux needs new dictionaries to figure that word out) and she has a great sense of humor when delivering some news and opinions that would normally make you cry because of how sad the politics of our country has become.
All they can do is attack her cause no one else comes close!

And he also calls her a "muckraker"? What, pray tell, would you call what goes on at Teabag TV (Fox)?

She called herself a muckraker and being a muckraker is not a bad thing.

Upton Sinclair, Ray Stannard Baker were muckrakers and look what they accomplished

I don't understand why Kurtz would blithely include such a statement without at least checking with Maddow. Seems unfair.

Because it's hard work. Not that Kurtz would have to do it; he'd just have to lift a finger and order some staffer to do it. But lifting that finger is hard work.

Why would "a Fox spokesperson" be granted anonymity? Who at Fox said this?

you gotta imagine that conservatives- especially ones affiliated with FOX - are scared silly of her. not only that she's so good - eloquent, passionate, a terrific debater - but that she's still so YOUNG, with more years left in the business than her present age.

Also, Maddow doesn't seem to be willing to get with the program or be a team player.

I really think she'd rather pack it in and give up her broadcast career rather than compromise her principals.

Most broadcast journalists, no matter how tough they like to come off, would rather please their bosses than lose their high profile, high paying gigs.

Maddow would never follow a memo telling her to be in favor of this or to kiss up to whomever, and I'm sure that makes her bosses a little wary of her.

good input. even Olbermann occasionally pulls punches, just to be safe I think, while Maddow never holds back. I especially appreciate the quiet if firm tone she uses to report the most scandalous, outrageous stuff. the contrast (between tone and material) is quite effective.

Maddow's been on a roll lately with her segments on GOP hypocrisy, and nailed Rep. Schock yesterday on Meet the Press.
