Does Hannah Giles want to amend her ACORN pimp spin?

February 21, 2010 9:31 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Her recent declaration was quite definitive

"We never claimed that he went in with a pimp costume," said Giles. "That was b-roll. It was purely b-roll. He was a pimp, I was a prostitute, and we were walking in front of government buildings to show how the government was whoring out the American people."

Of course, 'never' is a dangerous word in terms of making sweeping denials, especially in the age of Google, and especially when Giles and her ACORN partners, James O'Keefe and Andrew Breitbart, were so talkative last year about their ACORN sting. (I've already documented how both men pushed the phony dressed-as-a-pimp storyline.)

So before I write anything else on this topic, and as a courtesy to Giles, I'll ask again: Does she intend to stand by her claim that she and her cohorts "never" suggested O'Keefe was dressed as a pimp when he entered the ACORN offices?

Until recently I had always been under the mistaken impression that James O'Keefe had, in fact, dressed outlandishly as a pimp during the secretly-taped ACORN episodes. It made me wonder how stupid ACORN workers must have been not to have been made either immediately alarmed or suspicious by the obvious costume. It also makes me more curious to see the entirety of the tapes, not edited versions.

Early on in the story an ACORN employee, the one who's office phoned the police, posted a video describing her interaction with O'Keefe and Hannah Giles. In that video she said the two of them were not dressed in anything strange. In fact she made a point of mentioning this, because Hannah and O'Keefe had both been portrayed by Fox News as having gone into the ACORN facilities dressed in the outfits that we have come to identify them by.

O'Keefe, in response to her comment about their clothing, pointed out in a video... the one that has no audio of the Philadelphia employees and is narated by O'Keefe himself... attempts to suggest that the clothes he and Hannah were wearing should have been a clue to the ACORN employee... especially the outfit that Hannah was wearing.

He tried to call her a liar by suggesting that they did indeed have clothes on that should have raised the ACORN employees alarm. They are guilty of this false narrative and I can't wait to see what Eric Boehlert has in his holster on Ms. Giles.

I also thought that O'Keefe had been dressed like that but I never believed anyone took him seriously as a pimp. I assumed the ACORN workers were just humoring him and trying desperately to keep from laughing in his face. I always thought that O'Keefe was the idiot for thinking that was a believable disguise but apparently he didn't.

I held that same opinion and was rather vocal about it around here.

Alas, I was wrong. Not because such an explanation doesn't make sense, but rather because I didn't count on O'Keefe being such a dirty liar about the whole thing.

          Mea culpa...

The conservatives responsible for indoctrinating her have done their job well. "Forget about what we've said. Forget about what we've done. People who ask reasonable questions are bad.

Ah well. She's young. Perhaps there's time for her to take an objective look at the current crop of female role models the conservatives are embracing and perhaps rethink her ways.

Here's a fine, right wing site that clearly demonstrates at least what some see as a crucial factor if an aspiring, young, female journalist like Ms. Giles wishes to be taken seriously in conservative news and opinion reporting circles.

That's funny. Good thing they included Michelle Malkin in their The 15 Hottest Conservative Women In The New Media, otherwise it would have been all white chicks. And that might not have gone over well with the diverse, Big Tent Teabagger crowd.

Yep...just what I've been saying. Wait until Sarah Palin's butt gets wider than a Humvee and those lines in her face get deeper. Let's see how wonderful shallow right wingers think she is then...

Exactly. Yulia Tymoshenko did not become Prime Minister because she is beautiful, but because of her brains.

Like all conservatives, Palin is quick to jump on Obama on anything he tries to do, yet what is their plan?

Tax cuts to fix the economy are nice and dandy, when you actually have a job.

Privatizing Health Care sounds nice, when there is actual competition and you don't have 'Death Panels' denying you coverage because you have a 'pre-existing condition.'

So the world is getting hit with heavy winter storms, that doesn't mean global warming is not real, because it seems to me that the Summers are getting hotter with people dying in the heat waves.

And finally, last I checked Jesus Christ, who Conservatives love and adore, said a lot of things that sound pretty Socialist/Communist because he certainly did not advocate charging for his services. Maybe we should ban Christmas since it is about Socialism (giving to those who have nothing who are most likely like that for being lazy) and has a obese Socialist giving away brand new, top of the line toys to children for behaving (or being indoctrinated as Hannity would say).

I would think that Irony's commentary is based on the type of person that Sarah is (shallow, looks-oriented, no grasp on reality) rather than women in general. I would think that in what we know about Sarah, that she would be the type to dial up a plastic surgeon. When she proves us wrong, then you can attack. But it doesn't disparage women, many of whom opt for plasticizing.

It ain't just a liberal thing, but you always want to tag it as so. Again, as a fellow ex-Hoosier, I'm embarrassed for you.

Liberals poke fun at Sarah Palin and her looks because that's all she has. She doesn't have a platform, she can't talk intellectually about policy, she has been betting everything on her looks and "charm". Why else would she be flirting with every camera pointed in her direction, and who in blazes winks at the audience during a vice presidential debate except someone who is trading on their looks. Palin is the one who has built a cult around her based on her looks and "charm" as opposed to any real policy initiatives.

Conservatives make fun of Michelle Obama's looks (I've seen comparisons of her to monkeys, neanderthals, bush women, etc) and Pelosi (this just never stops) because that's all conservatives have. They can't find make any real arguments against the policies, so they fall back on personal attacks. Pelosi has staked her professional career on politics and policies and failing a cogent argument against them, conservatives will attack her looks. The attacks on Michelle Obama are just racist.

See th difference? If not, you're a moron.

The cult of Sarah Palin depends greatly on her looks. Right wing men obviously salivated over the dingbat. And that's the point...she is a dingbat who uses her looks and winky-winky, cutie pie personality. She's a freakin' BEAUTY QUEEN! Get it...?

There's hope for both Giles and O'Keefe.

I was rather strongly conservative myself back at that age. Conservative enough to have tried some of these dirty tricks myself had I been in the company of like-minded peers.

The key to getting such people to embrace sanity lies in showing them how deep their misconception of us liberals really runs.

They don't oppose us because they have better ideas. They oppose us because voices on the right have convinced them that we are devils incarnate.

When one perceives one's opponents to be devils incarnate, all actions and lies are justifiable.

A B-roll is when, in th news, they show an example that matches with what the reporter is saying. For example, Reporter says how people (show clip of people walking) are in time (show clip of watch) for more people (show anothe clip of people walking)

It's footage that has been shot on a secondary camera of a scene in which a primary camera was used to obtain the main footage. Or it is just random establishing peices of footage used to tie a story together. For instance in a documentary during n interview the may show footage related to the topic of discussion. This is B-Roll.

Well gosh, every single person who came into any contact with your message somehow missed that. It might have something to do with the fact that you didn't hint at it in the tiniest way until after you brainstormed for days on how to BS out of your lie.

At this point we should just assume that the ACORN workers were responding to "some weather, huh?" until proven otherwise. And we won't be proven otherwise because Breitbart by his own rules is aiding and abetting child prostitution by refusing to release the videos.

Given her partner's legal trouble, the esteemed Ms. Giles might want to consider being more circumspect. It seems reasonable to conclude that if O'Keefe is convicted for illegal activity performed in Federal buildings, the entire phony pimp charade might well come under scrutiny by investigators. And that might mean she'd be on the hook as an accomplice.

Actually, it is already under scrutiny after an independent group viewed the videos and concluded that they had been deceptively edited, audio was altered, and that the pair had not gone into the ACORN locations dressed in the flamboyant "pimp" costume that is viewed in the "b-roll."

Still, after all of that deception on the part of the "filmmaker" the independent investigators concluded that the tapes show no illegal activity on the part of any ACORN employee, while excoriating the organization for not being... well, very organized. It harshly criticizes their hiring and management practices... and rightly so.

These videos may have been the best possible thing for ACORN, because now they can see what they need to do to get their house in order.
