Gaffney issues correction on post linking Missile Defense Agency logo to Obama campaign logo, Islamic star and crescent

February 27, 2010 3:18 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a February 27 post by Frank Gaffney on BigGovernment.com:

In a post here Wednesday, under the headline "Can This Possibly Be True?," I called attention to a "new" logo being used by the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) on the grounds that it bore a disconcerting resemblance to an amalgamation of the Obama campaign's logo and the symbols of Islam, the crescent and a single star.   It turns out the answer is "no," it isn't true that the MDA's logo is exactly new or, apparently, that it reflects an Obama-directed redesign.

We have since learned that the logo has been used at the MDA website since at least October 2009.   Matters are made more confusing by the fact that the agency continues to use its older shield-like logo for online and other purposes.  The contract for a complete rebranding for MDA was let in 2007, during the Bush administration, although much of the work appears to have been done in 2008 in follow-on contracts during the presidential campaign in which the Obama logo was much in evidence.

It has also been observed that - rather than embracing the symbolic crescent and star, they could be interpreted as the targets of the intercepting swoosh in the MDA's latest logo.  If so, the 2009 design would presumably be offensive to Islamists, rather than evidence of submission to them.

For these reasons, I am content to have the question posed in the last post be answered in the negative, and I regret any confusion caused by my suggesting otherwise.

The correction is a nice first step, Frank. Now, about your paranoid delusions....

The correction is a nice first step, Frank.

A nicer first step would be to check out the story BEFORE posting it, so as to avoid having to make the correction in the first place.

      What insanity.

Any rational human being could have told this story was bullsh!t the first time they heard it.
With all the "sekret muslin" talk about the President, if he was involved in the design at all, he would make sure that even the most highly paranoid bloggers couldn't devise some conspiracy.

Didn't FoxNews cable network do their so-called 'people-say-Obama-madeup-controversy' news report about this story too? If so, then FoxNews' Viewers were just beginning to believe it now what will they do? Will they believe FoxNews' so-called 'people-say-Obama-madeup-controversy' news report as "truth" and ignore this correction from Gaffney? Uh, oh. What will FoxNews' Viewers believed? Too funny indeed.

Bah and humbug, there's no reason to withdraw the claims. Even more startling, there's an entire planet out there that also resembles the Obama/Islam logos:

Of course, Gaffney could have checked with agency FIRST before losing his marbles and ranting.

But, of course, you can't waste time fact-checking things when you are busying scoring quick & easy political points ...

This one was not a hard story for Gaffney to fact check for connections to an Obama-directed initiative. There have been several other stupid stories---the coin redesign immediately comes to mind--with right-wing paranoid freakouts over something that originated in the previous administration. So early in any administration it should be an elementary requisite to define any overlaps in administration policies as well.

How many times will the press continue to advance stories that blame or criticize Obama and the Dems for things not of their making? It only hurts press credibility outside the RW echo chamber, which is where credibility really counts for something.

'I was a flaming lunatic fringe and then I decided to see if what I said was real.' Yep, that qualifies you to be a spokesman for all the Fox News chicken littles....."the sky is falling, the sky is falling...nevermind, I forgot to take off my sunglasses...we're okay...until the next wack-a-doodle theory comes and then WATCH OUT"
Just Stop....please, stop...you're damaging all of us....your retraction doesn't matter...you landed your lunacy and you should be as ashamed of yourself as I am angry.

Perhaps BigGvmt should institute a right-hand column, like the one to the right here, but dedicated to corrections. They seem to come fast and furious there. It would be a real service to their readers.

Honestly, you think he's embarrassed? It doesn't matter that he retracted it, he's not losing sleep either way. It's out there and I'm willing to bet a high percentage of those who saw the first part of the story never see the retraction. He did his job of finding something new to feed the beast. This was mission accomplished.

No need for an apology from Frank. I guaran-damn-tee you that four or five months from now, and especially if the Obama administration has a breakthrough on arms control, that the same bogus story will appear on another right-wing website, and some Fox anchor will repeat it as gospel.
