National Review pretends not to notice evidence of global warming

March 01, 2010 12:30 pm ET by Jamison Foser

Last Thursday, Reuters reported that January, like November and the last decade, was quite warm:

"January, according to satellite (data), was the hottest January we've ever seen," said Nicholls of Monash University's School of Geography and Environmental Science in Melbourne.

"Last November was the hottest November we've ever seen, November-January as a whole is the hottest November-January the world has seen," he said of the satellite data record since 1979.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in December that 2000-2009 was the hottest decade since records began in 1850, and that 2009 would likely be the fifth warmest year on record. WMO data show that eight out of the 10 hottest years on record have all been since 2000.

Strangely, though, this report cannot be found on National Review's "Planet Gore" blog, where they think that a snowy Moscow winter is evidence that global warming is a hoax.  I'm sure National Review's obsessive global warming denialists just missed teh Reuters report.

Yeah, right.

It's hard to notice supposed global warming as you're shoveling 2 feet of snow.

Well, it's a good thing there are qualified scientists looking at the accumulated data. Keep those myopic deniers in check.

we got another smart one on our hands folks. Seahawk seems to think snow is a contradiction to global warming. Yet another example of someone talking about things they have absolutely no clue about. I bet if this guy took a few minutes to research the entire theory of global warming instead of watching fox or listening to rush he might actually realize weather and climate or two different things. But I'm willing to bet he wouldn't bother doing any leg work....he would rather have someone else tell him how to think. Typical thoughtless right wing propaganda, deny the facts and let the free market solve everything. BRILLIANT!!!!

The reason it's "hard to notice" is that you don't understand that global warming is quite likely responsible for that 2 fee of snow you're shoveling. Learn to differentiate between weather [instant events] and climate [patterns of many years of instant events]. Two different things, big bird.

-- 2000-2009 was the hottest decade since records began in 1850 -- Foser

Dr.Phil Jones of the Climate Research Unit has put a different light on that contention:

-- the debate over whether the world could have been even warmer than now during the medieval period, when there is evidence of high temperatures in northern countries, was far from settled...

if the MWP was shown to be global in extent and as warm or warmer than today, then obviously the late 20th Century warmth would not be unprecedented. On the other hand, if the MWP was global, but was less warm than today, then the current warmth would be unprecedented. --

None of the above has anything to do with the topic that MMFA's article above is discussing.

I might add that you posted an article from the Daily Mail Online. The Daily Mail is a tabloid, not a legitimate news source. The Daily Mail has quite a history of settling libel lawsuits with people who have been wrongly smeared on its pages.

Seriously, I'm starting to wonder if the deniers all have reading comprehension problems. None of them seem to understand abstract constructs that speculate using if/then statements.

Liar. First off, there was warming in the past 15 years - just not enough to be definitely, statistically significant. But it was almost enough, and that's not a long-enough time period to measure. Climatologists use 30 year intervals to gauge.

There can be intervals during a longer period of global warming where the overall increasing temperatures aren't quite so extreme.

I pretty much ignore the trolls, as they wander through the global warming debate.
If they had anything to add to the debate it would be different but; they don't.

Probably best, but as MMFA continues getting more traffic thanks to the attention it receives from those who say what a terrible, terrible place this is (that's how I came here--thank you, Bill O'Reilly) I think we have to occasionally give the trolls a firm smack. Countering their absurdity with hard facts gives those who might buy into their nonsense a little something to think about.

We're not going to open all of their eyes. I just keep hoping we'll get through to a few.

You "ignore" trolls and allow their untrue information stand unanswered. Other folks come to this site and see this crap, unanswered. Ignoring trolls does not make them go away and it allows false information to stand. If you want to "ignore" the trolls, feel free to do so, but don't presume to tell others to follow suit.

Personally, I rather enjoy some of the posts from a few of our trolls. I always smile when they tell us how terrible unfair MMFA is knowing that a few of us have been booted from conservative websites for the terrible, terrible crimes of asking reasonable questions, debating with respect, and offering facts.

I feel sorry for a few of them, too. I think a some of them post here just to get some attention they're not finding elsewhere.

Ah well, I'm just going to continue to have fun when I come here. I'll offer some debate. I'll offer some snark. As far as troll herding goes I guess we'll all have to respond or not respond as we see fit.

Sorry, wasn't meant that way. We all know weasely and seahawk are closed minded, and I do agree about not letting untrue information stand but; they aren't here to debate, just derail threads. I do agree with MW. Some of the troll post are outrageously funny. A certain josie comes to mind.

I love it, how the denialists can't argue the facts, so they resort to ideological rants about Al Gore, IPCC, emails, etc.

      Stick the facts, denialists.

Here's an experiment - and it does not require a model!

Get a handful of that snow.
      Put it in a pan.
Put the pan on the stove.
Heat the pan. (You may need a responsible adult to supervise you on this part.)
Watch what happens. (Never mind that old saying about a watched-pot.)
What's that stuff coming out of the pan? Smoke? Nope. Moisture.

What happens to moisture eventually? Rain or snow.
      See how easy that was?

Now, let's try another experiment on how good CO2 is for you.
First, go stick your head in a plastic bag.....
