Of course that would be the only possible explanation. Acceptance by the House and Senate of all of the other amendments and recommendations from Republicans that made it into the final bills were also gimicks. And don't forget the provisions that were removed at Repubs requests - also gimicks. Afterall, bi-partisanship can only come from Repubs. What looks like Dems bi-partisanship is deceivingly only gimicks. (The world according to hyperpartisan Repubs)

The hypocrite is any Republican who claims that Obama hasn't been bipartisan.

....wow, that's 5 for 5 blatantly right-wing headlines. Way to go, fair and balanced.

On a substantive note, Obama's concessions are SOME sort of gimmick, but not what they think it is. His concessions will get no votes, leaving many progressives wondering why he's still making them in the first place.

I think he's doing it so that he (I think rightly) can declare that the bill is bipartisan, even if no Republican votes for it.

The bills were already full of Republican ideas. It's very clear to me that the Reps don't just want their ideas in. They want the Dems ideas out.

I think that his support of 4 GOP health ideas is to show that when the GOP vote against it, that they are not really interested in working for anything, just working against Obama...

I say, screw the republicans. They're not going to vote for the bill regardless of how many of their own ideas are in it. Just write the bill that most of America really wants, and forget about those folks who aren't going to vote for it no matter what happens.

Agreed. That's been my position for a year. Tweek what we got, add a public option, and be done with it. After it is signed, try to amend it to add a Medicare for 55 year old and up.

HALLELUJAH! They're going to do anything they can to oppose it no matter what, so why bother trying to include them at all? We already know their answer.

The reason to incorporate the Republican ideas is NOT because it'll get them to vote for it.

        1) If they have good ideas, we should incorporate them because we should incorporate good ideas.

        2) If they have halfway decent ideas we can stomach, we should incorporate them so we can later say that we incorporated them!

        3) If we show our good behavior here, it will be something we can use against them for years to come politically.

It makes sense to behave this way. Obama is being true to the person he is.

It is as much gimmick as the summit was a trap and President Obama is a Kenyan. In other words, puffery.
