NY Times: "Christians Urged to Boycott Glenn Beck"

March 11, 2010 4:18 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a March 11 post on the NY Times' The Caucus blog:

Last week, the conservative Fox television host Glenn Beck called on Christians to leave their churches if they hear any preaching about social or economic justice because, he claimed, those are slogans affiliated with Nazism and Communism.

This week, the Rev. Jim Wallis, a liberal evangelical leader in Washington. D.C., called on Christians to leave Glenn Beck.

"What he has said attacks the very heart of our Christian faith, and Christians should no longer watch his show," wrote Mr. Wallis, who heads the anti-poverty group Sojourners, on his "God's Politics" blog. "His show should now be in the same category as Howard Stern."

Mr. Beck, in vilifying churches that promote "social justice," managed to insult just about every mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, African American, Hispanic and Asian congregation in the country - not to mention plenty of evangelical ones.

Even Mormon scholars in Mr. Beck's own church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said in interviews that Mr. Beck seems ignorant of just how central social justice teaching is to Mormonism.

Previously

Beck: Social justice is "infecting all" faiths

Beck: Question church leaders who are "basing their religion on social justice"

Beck: Social justice "is a perversion of the Gospel," "not what Jesus would say"

Beck doesn't really want to destroy the bible. He just wants to replace all the references to Jesus with himself:

That is probably the most disturbing image I have ever seen. I am going to have nightmares for at least a month seeing that image.

I write horror movies and I don't think that I could come up with anything as disgusting as what you just showed me.

You know he's right. You all should have an extended stay in some Communist Country so you can WAKE UP.......Is it going to take standing in line for bread ? Before you do ? Religion aside, is that really what you want ? Maybe you should pray more. Because things are happening fast and you may not like the outcome. Read more before you come to your conclusions.......please take the time to turn it over in your mind a time or two. That's just a stupid hateful thing to say about Glenn Beck. Childish. He wants people to stop being so easily led and actually think for themselves. We don"t need our government to do our thinking for us. A little common sense goes a long way.

Many people this country cannot even afford bread, let alone stand in line for it. Other people in this country eat way too much bread, and need to stop eating it because they are overweight. Turn that over in your mind.

Let me fix this for you:

"You know he's right. You all should have an extended stay in some Homeless shelter so you can WAKE UP.......Is it going to take standing in line for food and a bed ?"
            (BOLD mine)

It doesn't necessarily take going to a Communist country to see poverty, or do you simply turn a blind eye to all the homeless folks in your community? How often do you volunteer? How often do you give a bit of change? How often do you even notice them? Or, do you even CARE?

Did MLK Jr. and do the various churches who use the term social justice mean simply human rights and equality (under the law and under God), or do they mean economic egalitarianism or equality of outcome?

I find it difficult to believe that someone like MLK Jr. could have been such a proponent of civil rights and yet purport the breaking of one's natural rights in favor of some sort of equality of outcome as a goal for which to aspire.

Though, I also find it difficult to understand how some of the founding fathers could speak so passionately about liberty and yet fail to apply the same logic to slaves.

I have to do more research, but I'm hoping someone could answer here if they know offhand.

I'm still trying to figure out how Glenn Beck's little puke fest of a show has survived a whole hour dedicated to getting to the bottom of the Democratic corruption... with the help of Mr. Massa!

The look of shock? indignation? realization that Glenn had on his show someone crazier than he? will forever be ingrained in my memories! Classic stuff!

Oh... and my thoughts on the issue this thread is about... I question the legitimacy of Glenn Beck's faith and religiousness.

You're wondering how his show will survive that, Capt. ? On another thread about the Massa interview, there is a Beck fan insisting (to himself, I guess) that Beck got exactly what he wanted out of that interview.

I know what you're saying, that even alongside Beck's usual lunacy and failures, that was a catastrophe. The problem is, anybody who has willed themselves into taking the clown seriously will not be swayed by anything. I think the type of person who could take Beck seriously prior to the Massa interview would still be a fan if Beck opened his show tonight in a loincloth, on a unicycle, flinging his own feces at the audience. They might even be a bigger fan after that.

Third letter I've ever written on Beck . . . the first one was to HLN shortly before he got canned, the second was to a couple of his advertisers [before the official boycott] asking them if they truly wanted their products associated with this horrible person and the third was to Fox today asking them if they really, really wanted to tick off 80% of the American population.

You honestly CANNOT be serious. People have left churches for lesser reasons than someone like Glenn Beck. It happens all the time. I left the church BECAUSE of the minister at the time years ago and have never gone back. So, if a minister and his drivel could make me leave, then why not someone like Beck? Unfortunately, there are lots of folks out there who have bought into Beck and all his crap and would leave their church(es) if he told them to do so. Do you know religious history at all? Let's see, Martin Luther left the Catholic Church to form the Lutheran Church, the Wesleys brothers left the Lutheran Church to form the Methodist Church. Beck converted from who knows what religion to the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon).

Of course, once again, this is simply MHO.

The vast majority in the USA get FoxNews as part of one of the basic packages, and you can't unsubscribe to it without losing a lot of other channels. So, no, it's really not all that simple. On top of that, individuals unsubcribing has little impact.

If the majority of folk abandoned Rupert's "entertainment" then he will have to change tact.....isn't that a straight forward proposition? ok tell me Beck isn't right, yes he is a little over the top, but please.
Tell me what he says isn't true
How about the budget. That seems to be his biggest rant. tell me that we won't be in debt up to our eyeballs and broke in 15 -20 years if not sooner. China who is the biggest party to buying our debt won't even buy it straight from us anymore. They go through a south american country as the middle man.
he goes on to talk a lot about social justice. OK, I understand we need to help the poor, but at whose cost, and don't say the rich. when they are taxed at over 50% and higher, How much will they want to work? We live in the laziest country. If everyone is looking for a handout someone has to pay for it. A time will come when the well is dry. Obviousley it already is with the debt we have. I'm all for work hard and make more. If you're content with Mcdonalds for 30 years then so be it. My plan if you want to live in a socialized/democratic system, ---Everyone that wants that can live on a welfare budget. NO new cars, go back to renting. no eating out, no vacations, no new clothes, instead give your money to the ones on welfare. Everyone that wants this,,,go ahead. I'm not seeing too many hands.

Yes Beck can be painful to watch sometimes, but the man has a point.
What he preaches is for Americans to do it for themselves. Stop wating for the goverment to come along and bail everyone out. The more the goverment steps in the worse off we all are.

Christ warned of many false prophet's. I include Russ Limbaugh in the same category as Mr. Beck - as highly paid false prophet's. Still, I must pray for them, too. Our country is being sold a bill of goods when the rich sell our jobs to China, and say economic justice is communistic and moving our jobs overseas is just free enterprise. As they wipe out our newspapers and limit truth on news broadcasts we will only have those that fear truth and blame the poor to guide us. I will continue to go to my church, and pray, and do for Christ what he has done for me. I will look for Mr. Beck in heaven, but seriously doubt I will find him there. Christ's peace to all.

Yes, the budget is frightful. That's what comes from 2 unfunded wars, a trillion dollar giveaway to the rich, and an economic crash (not just a stock market crash!) caused by too little attention to what rich people are doing to get richer. Beck complains about this stuff, but he isn't complaining about the guys who caused it. No, he's complaining about the victims. It's all the fault of the poor. He urges the well-off to ignore the poor and pile up more gold, just as he is doing for himself.

Sorry, IKEAARON, but you appear to share the same attitude as many of our well-off friends. You want to be greedy and selfish and you don't want to feel guilty about it. The society you describe, with people so poor they can't afford decent food, clothing, or housing--that's the society many in this country are living in right now. But instead of working with those who want to help the poor (and ourselves) to get better jobs and better pay for the jobs they now do, you only want to continue your spending spree, wasting the resources of the earth, and satisfying every personal whim. You are the problem, not the poor, no matter how much money you make. If you can't see that, you should be going to one of those churches that preach social justice--and pay attention for a change!!

I love it. The more people like Beck, Limbaugh and Rove lie the more people are going to want to disassociate themselves from them and the Republican Party. They are doing the Democrats a great service.

Let him self-destruct. The man's a menace, but hopefully people will ultimately start to see right through it. Of course, Franken argued that about Rush Limbaugh in 1994 (yes?), and he still gets listeners!

I don't think Jesus would be too impressed. Neither would Mohammad, nor Hus, nor Luther, nor any religious leader of substance.

I tried to watch his show last night to see what he'd freak out about. At the opening of the show, he had pictures of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and FDR on a big screen. As he walked out, he stopped at Wilson's picture and said 'I hate that guy'. The ticker running beneath him was saying ACORN was forbidden from doing business in Ohio because the judge said ACORN did business that was considered 'organized crime'. I'm looking for info on that little tidbit, but have not found any just yet. What a freak show.

Glenn - President Wilson has been dead for a long time, now, and you never met him.

Yeah but the really bad part that you are totally not paying attention to, is what FDR and Wilson did while in office. Read about it. Maybe you could understand if you'd just read. Our President is on the same road. You people would let him take our rights and our minds away, to make our own desisions. Do you really like them telling you that your too stupid to think for yourself ? Telling you what to do and when ? Maybe after you let them tell you how it's going to be, long enough. They'll tell you all what religion you will now believe in. Kinda like Nancy Palosie said, "It's a surprise," well won't that be fun ? They'll tell your kids and you what to read and when and surprise ! I wonder what religion they will settle on......give it time.

Amazing. Almost every comment castigating Beck, declaring his listeners to be morons - yet you all apparently ARE listening because you fully understand his comments and position. If you AREN'T a listener, then you have no credibility to your arguments. If you ARE, then you are either one of the morons or you are intentionally misrepresenting his position - in which case you have no credibility in your arguments.

I told a good friend, who is an evangelical and pretty conservative, what Beck said about churches and social justice. He replied that he thinks sometimes Beck makes good points, but this is taking it too far. Yes! Beck can even turn evangelicals away from him.

When Father Martin wrote in the Huffington Post that helping the poor is not enough and we must combat the structures that keep them poor, he really tipped the hand of the social justice crowd. Jesus said for us to help the poor not to tamper with the government and let it do it for us. See that's the problem with a liberal. He doesn't want to get his hands dirty, he wants to take someone's money and let a bureau or program do the work. Jesus' teaching had nothing to do with the political structures of his time. In fact he told us to keep all this separate (render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's). Jesus was certainly no liberal. He didn't advocate for someone else to do what he told us to do ourselves. That's real compassion and you'll find it among most conservatives.

Don't forget, Christ whipped up a frenzy outside God's Temple. Don't think he liked the activities of those elders. Jesus was a liberal, who else spoke for the poor, who else cared for the poor, who else healed the poor. Who fed the masses, with only a little fish and bread. If you do give in church, it does go to the poor. When you give to others, you give to Christ. Our Constitution says, "We the people...", not we the rich and powerful. What we should do is impeach the Five Right Wingers on the Supreme Court for selling our political system to the highest bidder.

So why don't you contribute to a charaty? It's people like you who make it necessary FOR the government to step in. Whether you know it or not, you DO contribute to one, and the government is the facilitator. The reason it does it is the PRIVATE SECTOR WON'T!

And do not know what Jesus said about corruption in government.
You all just ridicule people for the sake of doing it, trying your best to ignore your own guilt. God has a special place in Hell for people like you. Jim Wallis just wants attention and he knows how to get it.You fools! Pathetic!

And you do read the Bible, do you? And you read the part where Jesus taught "Do not judge lest you be judged," did you? Because your attitude here shows just the opposite. Who are you to say who God is going to condemn someone to "special place in Hell."? Perhaps you are a Christian, you just believe its acceptable to act like you aren't.

Some quotes apparently missing from your Bible.

If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered."
        -Proverbs 21:13

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
        -Proverbs 31:8-9

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
        -Matthew 6:24

"Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.'"
        -Matthew 19:23-24

"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least among you, you did not do for me.'"
        -Matthew 25:41-45

"He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished."
        -Proverbs 17:5

"He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich--both come to poverty."
        -Proverbs 22:16

"Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"
        -Matthew 19:21

"He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses."
        -Proverbs 28:27

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
        -1 Timothy 6:9-10

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."
        -1 Timothy 6:17-19

"Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."
        -Ezekiel 16:49

"Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all."
        -Proverbs 22:2

"He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God."
        -Proverbs 14:31

"A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor."
        -Proverbs 22:9

"Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse."
        -Proverbs 28:6

"A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished."
        -Proverbs 28:20

"The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern."
        -Proverbs 29:7

"Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death."
        -Proverbs 11:4

"Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who plunder them."
        -Proverbs 22:22-23

"Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle."
        -Proverbs 23:4-5

"Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless."
        -Ecclesiastes 5:10

"A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold."
        -Proverbs 22:1

"There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."
        -Deuteronomy 15:11

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have."
        -Hebrews 13:5

"You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge."
        -Psalm 14:6

"He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward him for what he has done."
        -Proverbs 19:17

"A rich man may be wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has discernment sees through him."
        -Proverbs 28:11

"A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare."
        -Proverbs 21:6

"The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it an unscalable wall."
        -Proverbs 18:11
