Politico comment section offers window into the dark soul of today's right wing

March 12, 2010 9:06 am ET by Eric Boehlert

I usually avoid trying to make any larger connection, or draw any type of conclusions, based on posted comments online. Most often written anonymously, they certainly tend to be angry and combative and at times downright offensive. Readers can essentially post whatever they want and never be held accountable. Plus, because of the sheer volume of comments, it's difficult for host sites to monitor them all.

Everybody knows online readers from every corner of the political spectrum write all kinds of crazy stuff, day in and day out, which is why I generally just ignore offensive comments, and rarely highlight them.

That said, the comment section thread connected to a recent Politico article about how Sen. Harry Reid's wife and daughter were seriously injured in a Washington, D.C. area car crash, was -- even for a online veteran like myself -- just jaw-dropping.

What was so stunning was the sheer, unadulterated hatred that conservative readers tapped into so they could mock and heap scorn on Reid and his injured family, and to wish that Reid's body had been mangled as well. To see this stuff published on a mainstream news site like Politico is also disturbing.

The GOP Noise Machine long ago turned the vitriol way past 11 when it came to trying to dehumanizing their political opponents. And if people want a glimpse into the dark soul of today's right wing, then keep reading.

This was the second comment posted under the Politico article about Reid's injured wife and daughter:

Quick, get Rahm out of the shower and send him over there--They might need poking!

This was the third:

Reid's a Mormon, so he probably has spares

And that was just the beginning:

Personally, we don't give a d*mn. If Reid had been in the car too, we'd call that the cherry on the sundae of our day.

And:

A pity Harry wasn't in the car.

And:

Its to bad it wasn`t him instead.

And:

too bad harry wasn't driving the car, with that hag pelosi riding shotgun, love to see her face go splat.......what goes around comes around, keep being socialists....

And:

Too bad it wasn't Queenie Botox Pelosi's demise. KARMA: It WILL Get You!!

And:

If Reid gets his way your family could die in the street for all he cares. Don't give me this crap about respecting his family because I can assure you he doesn't respect yours.

And:

Maybe the creep Seedy Reidy realized his campaign needed some sympathy.

And:

KARMA.........KARMA........KARMA.....Ain't it *Magical*????

And:

... ashes, ashes and they all fall down.......

And:

What goes around comes around....

And:

Poor idiot Ried ,wife and daughter in an accident, right before he accidently destroys the USA. Oh thats right he`s doing it on purpose.

Remember, the fanatical outpouring of hate was not prompted by news about what a politician had done, but by the revelation that members of a senator's family had been badly injured.

I should also note that a couple commenters posted pleas for Politico to shut the article's comment section down since portions of it had deteriorated into a cesspool. But no action was taken.

UPDATED: It appears that editors at Politico have now gone in an deleted the offensive comments highlighted by Media Matters.

I saw one comment on the story on CNN that actually said 'a jew was probably driving the other car. they think they own the road and everything else'. Not sure how that had any relevance.

What's funny about this (funny strange, not funny ha-ha) is that several folks were talking about karma coming back to get Reid.

What has Reid done that is cosmically so bad that his wife and daughter should be injured in a car wreck? Not sure exactly.

These folks are amazingly awful. So much for compassionate conservatism and all. It's called not kicking a man when he's down.

But alas, it is a comments section, and we can't expect any better from some of our right wing bretheren in their hate for everything democratic.

Actually, if these commenters actually knew what karma is and believed it exists, they would NEVER make those comments. They would know that the bile they just released would be collected and visited upon them. A belief in karma requires you to consider your behavior and improve it, not to worry about what the other guy is doing.

A compilation of those disgusting comments might make for a nice political ad for Reid's campaign, highlighting the character of his political opposition.
What ever happened to the conventional compassion in the phrase " I would not wish that upon my worst enemy"?

I wouldn't, and don't. Because if I respond in kind, I stoop to their levels of stupidity, ignorance, and, well, again, stupidity. I'd rather not do that. Because, I know I can be, and am (most of the time) better than they are.

i would caution against using words like "better than they are" only in that the statement might be construed as you being an elitist, superior to another. Comments like the above examples come from people with a lot of anger and frustration... agony, that things aren't going their way. They are delighting in the "enemy" feeling some agony as well. Petty, very petty. So, when I an feeling agony, please self, don't let me say or even feel such vile things toward another human being

Nah, I think in this case, I AM better than those people making said comments. There is no agony that these folks are feeling that should make them write hateful things about Reid's family. Nothing. Well, actually, if Reid were like a dictator and inflicting pain and suffering on the nation as a whole, then I could see someone cheering for the suffering he and his family have endured in this case, but this isn't even remotely the case.

If I am an "elitist" for showing compassion for someone else whose loved ones have been injured in an accident, call me an elitist. Also, I don't think I'm alone in this. In this case, I would hazard to guess that the vast majority of people would be on my side, and hence, better than these chuckleheads writing this sick comments.

            Don't you agree?

I'm sorry if it seemed I was calling you an elitist - I wasn't. What I am trying to say is that statements like "better than they are" would be interpreted by those vile-speakers in that manner and would consequently be ignored and simply add to their conviction that the leftie crowd are a bunch of elitist snobs. Like one of the responses below says, I have felt a little bit of this same thing toward creatures like Limbaugh when he had that heart attack - I guess the differece is that I wouldn't be posting some nasty remake about it online - catholic guilt?... perhaps, or perhaps common decency

I do it. Though I don't post such things in cyberbia I do admit I get a chuckle when Dick Cheney unloads a barrel of birdshot in an old guys face, or when Strom Thurmond kicked the bucket.
I won't play the un-holier than thou card on this one.
I guess my saving grace is that politics don't rule my life to the point that I'm jaded.

I just think of it this way: "People ask me if I want to see Bush or Cheney executed for their crimes against humanity. I tell them no, I work with peaceniks and it's incorrect to wish for such things. Do I want to see them sent to prison for the rest of their lives? Sure, absolutely, no problem with that at all."

Death is a part of life, celebrate the person (if they deserve it) not their death.

9/11 and the Oklahomo bombings all involved tragic deaths.

None of those people died because of how they lived their lives.

Couple of years ago, I was proud to be a lefty when I saw someone say "Hey, there's word that Ann Coulter engages in really wild, decadent sex acts!" The reaction on the blog was that people completely believed it, but "She's single and a grown-up. It's her business what she does in her private life."

I'd like to see proof of a liberal-leaning site that has that many comments lamenting the fact that a conservative/tea party/republican did not have their face go "splat" in light of family being hurt...When the politician ISN'T EVEN PART OF THE STORY.

Feel free to leave a link.

The fact that you don't see anything wrong with it tells a lot about you.

In any case, MMFA ALREADY stated that there are horrible people across the board, so your comment either shows that you reject the intellectual art of reading or you're just instigating conflict to satisfy something lacking inside.

I think I have seen comments sections where liberals have talked bad about like, Tony Snow when he was diagnosed with cancer, and when he passed away.

But, those comments were the minority of the comments, and the folks who posted such things were chastised by other members of the "community".
