Conservative blogger accuses Hannity of deceptive fundraising practices
March 19, 2010 12:22 am ET by Jamison Foser
I'm hesitant to take anything Debbie Schlussel says seriously, given her track record. That rather large disclaimer aside, Schlussel has posted what is, on its face, a potentially damaging investigation of Sean Hannity and the Freedom Alliance charity. Given the public statements by New York Times and Washington Post editors about the need to be more responsive to stories developed on conservative web sites, you have to wonder if they'll look into this:
For the last several years, Sean Hannity and the Freedom Alliance "charity" have conducted "Freedom Concerts" across America. They've told you that they are raising money to pay for the college tuition of the children of fallen soldiers and to pay severely wounded war vets. And on Friday Night, Hannity will be honored with an award for this "Outstanding Community Service by a Radio Talk Show Host" at Talkers Magazine's convention.
But it's all a huge scam.
In fact, less than 20%-and in two recent years, less than 7% and 4%, respectively-of the money raised by Freedom Alliance went to these causes, while millions of dollars went to expenses, including consultants and apparently to ferret the Hannity posse of family and friends in high style. And, despite Hannity's statements to the contrary on his nationally syndicated radio show, few of the children of fallen soldiers got more than $1,000-$2,000, with apparently none getting more than $6,000, while Freedom Alliance appears to have spent tens of thousands of dollars for private planes. Moreover, despite written assurances to donors that all money raised would go directly to scholarships for kids of the fallen heroes and not to expenses, has begun charging expenses of nearly $500,000 to give out just over $800,000 in scholarships.
Schlussel then summarized Freedom Alliance's revenues and expenses for several years. For example:
According to its 2006 tax returns, Freedom Alliance reported revenue of $10, 822, 785, but only $397,900-or a beyond-measly 3.68%-of that was given to the children of fallen troops as scholarships or as aid to severely injured soldiers.
Those numbers check out (pdf). But Freedom Alliance's mission is broader than scholarships and aid to injured soldiers (a fact Schlussel overlooks), so it's certainly possible that it is spending an appropriate proportion of its revenues to advance that mission. But Schlussel doesn't merely criticize the charity's disbursements; she also contends the Freedom Alliance's fundraising practices have been deceptive:
And then, there are the 2008 Freedom Alliance tax forms, which were signed in November 2009 and filed only recently. That year, Freedom Alliance took in $8,781,431 in revenue and gave $1,060,275.57 total-or just 12%-to seriously wounded soldiers and for scholarships to kids of the fallen. Remember, this is well below the 75% required to be considered a legitimate charity. And after claiming in written letters to donors that 100% of the money donated, via the Freedom Concerts or otherwise, to the scholarships would go directly to the scholarships and not to expenses, the Freedom Alliance decided to do the contrary and charge expenses anyway-charging a whopping $436,386 to give out $802,250 in scholarships. That means that 35% of the $1,238,636-all of which was supposed to go to scholarships for these kids of the fallen-went to Freedom Alliance. [Emphasis added]
Unfortunately, Schlussel doesn't provide any documentation for the assertion that Freedom Alliance claimed in writing that 100 percent of donated funds would go to scholarships, so we don't know if it's true.
Schlussel's characterizations and assertions need to be taken with more than a grain of salt -- they require an entire salt lick, at least. But her numbers seem to check out. If her assertions that Hannity has made false claims in raising money for the charity are also true, that would be scandalous.
Editors at The New York Times and the Washington Post have said in recent months that their papers need to do a better job of picking up on stories right-wing web sites are pushing. Schlussel's investigation into Hannity and Freedom Alliance would seem like a good place for the Post and Times to do some digging -- unless, of course, they only intend to follow up on conservative attacks on liberals.

Ahem. You recently hired an investigative journalist for this kind of thing--Joe Strupp. I would not hold my breath waiting on the Post and Times.
The Schaden Freuds itself!

Hannity's "Freedom" concert is a money scam
This is the money that has been alleged to not be going to the intended recipients. If so this is a truly appalling scam and should indeed be picked up by MSM and more importantly perhaps should be known to the military.
I hope that he and his dubious charity are investigated and charged with fraud. It would be beautiful to see him try to explain that one.
If this story breaks, how many of his idiots will believe it. Why should they? They other leader of the Republicans is the Druggie Rush.
Great Leadership---

Glenn the Alcoholic
Liz Cheney the Liar
Bachman the Nut
Come to think of it, Sarah Palin might be the sanest of this bunch.
That's kind of the point...pretty much everyone, liberal or conservative, that donates substantially of their resources to a charity, will use the legally-created allowances of using their charity to reduce their tax obligations.
It doesn't make anyone unethical or a criminal to write-off charitable contributions; charities remind potential donors constantly that their contributions are tax-deductible.
A letter from Freedom Alliance is posted below.

The first line in this article is enough to trash the whole thing.
"I'm hesitant to take anything Debbie Schlussel says seriously, given her track record"
And by the posts above it is evident you're willing to believe anything that's thrown your direction.
One of the most important things I learned in school was to always check your sources; find out who they are, and what there underlying purpose is. Most, or the honest ones anyway, will tell you, or you will be able to gleen it from their sources.
The Freedom Alliance is the organization that runs the concerts. Of course they are going to claim the story is false. But, doesn't it give you pause; Ollie North is a convicted felon, and has shown an ability to move funds around. Sean Hannity, well lets put it this way if his lips are moving, he lying.
MMFA is not a media source. They are watchdog of media outlets, in this case Debbie Schlussel. Mr. Foser takes pains to make it clear that only Ms. Schlussel is making this claim, and that her credibility is less than perfect.
It's no secret that only a small portion Hannity's propaganda concerts go to charity because of the exorbitant overhead (paying the performers, renting venues etc.). It's even printed on the tickets, though you have to squint to see it.
You've got the critical thinking skills of a bag of hamburgers. Why didn't the President of the Freedom Alliance sit down with her and answer her questions? What was he afraid of? The truth? Can't he handle the truth?
Ms.Schlussel's reply is below:
T: Of course, they claim otherwise. You expected frauds to fess up? Are you that gullible? Hilarious.
In fact, the Freedom Alliance “response” doesn’t answer any of the questions I raised and goes on to lie more. They don’t address why they gave a triple amputee only $200—and in fact there are many of these examples provided in their tax return addendum, but I only cited a few for brevity’s sake. They also lie and claim that they gave a lot more money to charity b/c they categorize it as “program expenses.” But I’m sorry—calling $3 million in consulting fees, printing, and postage “program expenses” doesn’t change the fact that it still went to their cronies, not to a fund and not the soldiers who only got on average less than $900 apiece. It also doesn’t change the fact that out of the money spent (I didn’t use the money they claim they raised for their scholarship fund) the vast majority goes to those kinds of expenses.
Also, the “scholarship fund” is really a war chest for something else. We’ve been at war since 2001, when we went into Afghanistan, and we’re winding down in Iraq. Unless the kids were born in 2001 or thereafter, many of these kids are in college now and Freedom Alliance is giving them a pittance toward their college tuition, while they continue to build this massive warchest. With a giant multi-million dollar fund, why aren’t they giving the kids a free, complete ride to college? And how many kids of deceased troops will there be in the future? Enough to exhaust a multi-million dollar fund? Doubtful.
Moreover, because they hoarded millions of dollars, their returns show the fund shrunk by several million dollars with bad investments and market losses. That money could have put these kids through college for the entire time. What’s their excuse for the soldiers with no limbs and with severe burns? Are they waiting for two decades from now when technology is better? $165 for a soldier who is blind and his face blew up? No excuse for that. Their “response” is simply a non-response and an attempt to cover up the fraud.

Probably because she's a nutbag of the Fred Phelps variety and not credible as a source of ideas or information. You can't be selective with the info that comes from a person and only pick out what suits your agenda. Remember, this is a woman who claims that Obama is a Muslim. Either she is credible, or she isn't.
Can't have it both ways.
Countless times when pushing his Freedom Concerts, Sheer "Am i An Idiot?" InSannity states that is THE purpose of the Freedom Alliance. Period.
I've studied the Freedom Alliance financials and they waste a tremendous amount of money. Do they really need an annual dinner to honor great Americans like, well, InSannity? Wouldn't that $50,000 be better spent on true program services, such as helping people?
Go to the Freedom Alliance website and read their so-called "Annual Report." Can you find in there one - just one - dollar figure? What kind of "Annual Report" is that? Another puff piece for an ego-driven organization.
In the coming days InSannity will brag about how much money he's raised for the Freedom Alliance. How much of that is from donations sent in on top of the ticket price? Somelike like $3 out of every $40 ticket goes to the Freedom Alliance. Hefty concert expenses, of course!
I guess Seans new name is Shamity.

Going by the group’s 2005 IRS Form 990, out of over $9 million they received in direct public support, plus a million more in other income (including $370,000 in interest, etc) they spent $295,285 in “grant allocations”. They spent $461,051 on “conferences, meetings and conventions”, and 787,408 on “consultants”. The president raked in $142,300 and CFO $65,969. The group’s big expenditures were in printing, shipping and postage, to the tune of over three million dollars. In other words, they spent at least 10 times as much on shipping and printing as they did on grants to individuals.
This, by the way, only covers the part Freedom Alliance gets -and the crumbs that actually went to students. Assuming a concert goer only bought the cheap seats ($38 a pop), out of which $9 went to the venue for parking, etc and $4 went to Oliver North’s latest scam, that still leaves $25 per cheap ticket that goes…
Emphasis added.
But then, it's hard to use Charity Navigator to create a slanderous/libelous story.
Schlussel will do for now as a source. I am embarrassed for the people who are running with the misinformation that comes out of her mouth.
What now? Is she to be believed about her comments on Obama's religion?
HANNITY'S OTHER SCAM
(h/t NewsHounds)
Sean Hannity makes a great show of supporting the troops and is a big supporter of Freedom Alliance (FA). His "Freedom Concerts" give their proceeds to that group and FA received a failing grade from The American Institute of Philanthropy(AIP). AIP uses these criteria:
AIP believes that a charity should spend at least 60 percent of its cash budget on bonafide charitable programs (35 percent or less receives an F and 75 percent or more receive an A), should spend less than $35 to raise $100 ($60 or more receives an F and $15 or less receives an A) and should not maintain over three years of available assets in reserves (over five years receives an F).
According to the AIP's recent report, as reported in the WaPo:
The 12 charities rated as failing by the institute -- including the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, the AMVETS National Service Foundation and the Freedom Alliance -- collected at least $266 million in the past fiscal year.

1. Freedom Alliance is NOT Sean Hannity's charity. It was founded by Ollie North, and he is now honorary chairman. Sean Hannity is not on the board and not on the staff. All he does is lend his "celebrity" to the charity to help them raise money.
Accusing him of spending money dishonestly is absurd.
2. Schussel is only telling you about ONE of their programs. They also run summer leadership camps for teenage children of soldiers, fly military families all over the country and the world to visit their wounded military relatives, send tens of thousands of gift boxes overseas every year, and have group appreciation dinners for wounded military and their families many times a year all over the country.
Debbie Schussel hates Sean Hannity and she is personally attacking him. She is being extremely dishonest in the process, and is going to damage a charity that has been around since 1999 and does a lot of good.
I'm not trying to protect Hannity, because I really don't care about that. I DO care about being honest about a charity.
Please, research it yourself and quit smearing this charity unfairly!!
