Too good to check: RW blogs again snared by satire

March 29, 2010 5:47 pm ET by Matt Gertz

The right-wing media's tendency to believe anything that bolsters their worldview is well-documented. Last October, for example, they rushed to trumpet a blogger's entirely unsourced claim that President Obama attacked the Founders and the Constitution in his college thesis, only to end up looking extremely foolish once it became clear that the initial blog post that started the firestorm was tagged "Satire."

So you'll probably guess where I'm going when I mention that several right-wing news sources -- including Fox News -- today jumped on an EcoEnquirer.com report that "Famed global warming activist James Schneider and a journalist friend were both found frozen to death on Saturday, about 90 miles from South Pole Station."

Yup, EcoEnquirer.com is a satire site currently fronting "Breaking News" about the successful 2027 Bali global warming conference. Other EcoEnquirer.com stories include "U.S.-Canada Border Conflict Continues" and "EPA to Mandate Reductions in Emissions from Volcanoes."

The wall of shame is below the fold:

Why would the deniers jump on this even if it were true? Somebody freezing to death at the South Pole would hardly be evidence against global warming.

        Because they are idiots.

And this would be an example of "divine irony" in their minds. Because if you remember, Al Gore told us all that "it will never, ever be cold again".

I know that there are smart conservatives out there, but they seem to lack common sense AND the gene that makes them realize that they need to fact-check AND often the ability to admit errors.

Today on Tucker Carlson's site, the Daily Caller, they dishonestly implied that the expenses for the lesbian simulated sex club visit were Michael Steele's. They also baselessly stated that Steele wanted a private jet. When called to account for those dishonest portrayals, they couldn't admit it.

At least these fools who were too lazy to verify the story before running with it here are admitting their errors.

I wonder if Jon Stewart will get a hold of this. Please, oh, please do. He'll have a field day with this one.

U.S. temperatures were well below normal for the December to February period. Siberia is also said to have the coolest winter in their history.

I think when you see that Jimmy Dolittle is named as the pilot that's kind of a huge flashing sign.

How ignorant of history to you have to be to... oh, wait, I answered my own question.

Yeah, that's what hit me when I read the 'article'. I thought "Jimmy Doolittle"? How does that not set off alarm bells in anyone who had any education?

This is the funniest thing I've seen in months. The whole schmeer-- the parody and the gullible response.
