UPDATED: So much for Obama's "falling poll numbers"

April 26, 2010 10:45 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Boy, Obama's approval rating just continues to take a beating, right? That storyline must be true because the press has been telling us about his "falling poll numbers" since late last summer

From The New York Times, December 19, 2009 [emphasis added]:

After weeks of frustrating delays and falling poll numbers, Mr. Obama decided to take what he could get, declare victory and claim momentum on some of the administration's biggest priorities, even if the details did not always match the lofty vision that underlined them.

Washington Post, January 19:

On Wednesday one year will have passed since President Obama's inauguration. Much of the tidal wave of assessments has been negative: Falling poll numbers. Unfulfilled promises.

The Weekly Standard, April 26th edition:

The other factor in play is plummeting plummeting poll numbers... White House reporters tend to see falling poll numbers as a sign of incompetence, if not a character flaw.

So it must be true, right? Not quite.

-Obama's Gallup poll rating on Aug. 28, 2009: 50 percent

-Obama's Gallup poll rating on April 24, 2010: 50 percent

Look out below!!! Over the span of eight months, Obama's approval rating is exactly where it started. (And it never really budged.)

UPDATED: Right on cue! Conservative blogger Ed Morrissey today:

Obama won’t top this [2010] ticket, and with his approval ratings heading steadily south, it’s questionable whether he would help or hurt the national Democratic ticket anyway.'

O's approval rating drops, but within the margin of error--"O's approval is tanking!"
      Versus
Global temp rises over a 15-year span, but w/in the margin of error--"Proof there's no global warming!"
      Both from the same folks.

The people that actually believe this nonsense really eat it up though.

I've never trusted a president too popular with one side or the other. 50 percent approval is pretty darn good considering what the administration has been able to accomplish up to this point, even with the ever growing wall of dumb placed in the way by the republicans and their mouthpieces.

This is exactly what I have been thinking about. What falling numbers?? Just because some polls give him 48, doesn't mean his numbers are dropping, it just means that all polls have slight variations but the overall average stays about the same.

Ya gotta turn the numbers upside down . .

Now turn them sideways, facing northeast . .

Turn them upside down again - TWICE

      Subtract 3, Add 6 and Subtract 3 . .

Now you will have Mr. Obama's correct approval rating . .

Turn them sideways and multiply by 3? You mean bring them (up?) to the level of Congress, as in to the 15% mark?

I love to see people claim that his poll numbers are plummeting. It gives me yet another excuse to expose the truth - even though they will ignore any fact that does not support their premise.

The first word in this piece is "Boy" which obviously proves that liberals are the real racists so any other point you made after is invalid. ;) (This is sarcasm if anyone is wondering.)

I think a major difference in how some conservatives and liberals view poll results is that conservatives may tend to take them more literally while liberals take them with a grain of salt, realizing that there are many factors that may be driving the president's poll numbers. I never view the poll numbers as being written in stone because I realize that some of those polled will never approve of anything this president does no matter how they benefit from his policies. They are far right voters and will remain so. Policies mean nothing/very little to them because they simply don't like the party that controls the WH and Congress at this time.
