Praising AZ immigration law, IBD says "Arizona has a window seat to an illegal invasion"

April 27, 2010 7:04 am ET by Media Matters staff

From an April 26 Investor's Business Daily editorial, titled, "Praising Arizona (In Border Battle)":

Arizona's new law is a reminder that the states formed the federal government and not the other way around. One of the federal government's functions was to provide for the security of the new country against foreign enemies and intruders. At this, and particularly under this administration, it has failed miserably.

There are 460,000 illegal aliens in Arizona, a number that increases daily, placing an undue burden on the state's schools, hospitals and law enforcement. Arizona has a window seat to an illegal invasion and on the escalating and violent drug war in Mexico that has put American lives and society at risk.

Aided and abetted by the many small businesses who regularly (and knowingly) employ undocumented workers...

Oh, wait...in the Republican Bible small businessmen are the backbone of our economy, loyal, patriotic Americans who create jobs. We certainly can't blame them, can we? It's those damn Mexicans...!

The law is working even before it's implemented...keep up the good work Arizona!

May I see your long form birth certificate?

How do I know this is real?

Till we can be sure this holding tank will be your home. We're working on a deal to rent an uneeded FEMA camp.

If you get cleared remember the State of Arizona is massively hiring to support our new law. Bigger government is a good thing when used for GOP sponsered social adjustments.

Don't you think a better question to ask is why are they here in the first place? Per your linked article:

Some like Roldan, 34, who has a steady job as a warehouse worker

If this guy is an illegal, why does he have a steady job as a warehouse worker? Is it because the business is looking the other way in order to save a few dollares on wages, is it because we don't have a system that keeps people from using your Soc. Sec. #? Why?

Somehow, I think that passing a law that allows the police to stop people for suspicion of who they are is wrong. Like others have said before me, are we going to start forcing all americans to carry their papers at all times, do we get to have little emblems sewn on our clothes, where does it stop?

I don't think that it is necessarily a better question but it certainly is an important question.

I fully support efforts to crack down on employers that hire illegal aliens because they are a large part of the problem...as you correctly asserted.

          Sir,

Could you please point out the section of the law that "allows the police to stop people for suspicion of who they are"?

I am not saying that I agree or disagree with your greater viewpoint. It is just that I have not been able to locate this section in the actual wording of the law, and would like to find where so many others are seeing this.

          Thanking you in advance.

F**k the illegals. I couldn't care less what happens to them. My problem with this bill is the effect it will have on legal American citizens of Hispanic/Latino descent.

It allows an officer's "suspicion" -- i.e., the driver or a passenger has brown skin and black hair -- to become an excuse and reason to pull someone over even if no other crime has been committed.

The new law allows legal Americans to be pulled over and stopped for no other reason than racial profiling. Even if they ARE legal -- but happen not to have proof with them (imagine a bright young college student going to or from school) -- they can be arrested, charged with the newly-made crime of not having proper paperwork with them, and fined $750 just because they left their wallet at home.

I am convinced the law will be challenged on Constitutional grounds the day it goes into effect -- if not before.

Between the stupidity of the birther bill just passed and this piece of legislative hogwash, our Republican-majority AZ State Legislature has wasted time and taxpayer money. More taxpayer money -- possibly millions more -- will be wasted in legal defense of the lawsuits this bill will engender.

My question -- who is behind this bill and who will profit from it? Which lawyers? Which politicians? Which lobbyists? Here's a clue:

      Arizona: A State With Hate

      http://jornaleronews.ndlon.org/?p=492#more-492

"State Senator Russell Pearce has been pushing racially motivated, anti-immigrant legislation in Arizona for years. He is endorsed by and has direct associations with known white supremacists Buffalo Rick Galeener and J.T. Ready amongst others. Rick Galeener was cited for publicly urinating in front of a Latino mother and her child.

"J.T. Ready has publicly campaigned for Senator Pearce and has close ties to Neo-Nazi organizations. J.T. Ready has publicly stated, I firmly believe in having a minefield across the border, this is 100% effective. Senator Pearce did not return calls to comment on these associations nor has he denounced them publicly. Both Galeener and Ready have been monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League and are classified as nativists, extremists and white supremacists but Senator Pearce remains silent."

And his lawyer friends are rubbing their hands together in anticipation. They'll be able to cash in on lawyers fees fighting both sides of this bill.
