The NY Post's novel concept of attribution

May 12, 2010 11:27 am ET by Simon Maloy

Rupert Murdoch's New York Post has an article this morning that's sure to cause a stir on talk radio and the conservative blogosphere, reporting that President Obama rudely shot down the idea of playing a round of golf with Rush Limbaugh.

The basis for their report, however, is an unattributed quote relayed second-hand from an unnamed source, and the Post even acknowledges that they don't really know who said the quote.

The Post reports:

When President Obama was asked if he would play a round of golf with his talk-radio nemesis Rush Limbaugh, the response, relayed by a top Democrat, was: "Limbaugh can play with himself."

This is according to Zev Chafets in his new book, "Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One," due May 25 from Sentinel.

The caustic comeback is another example of the verbal venom between the White House and the conservative radio star. In an interview with CBS News last month, Obama called the views spelled out by Limbaugh and Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck "troublesome."

First of all, who knew that Post reporters were the sort of shrinking violets who consider calling someone "troublesome" to be an instance of "verbal venom"?

Second, take a good look at that passage above. It certainly suggests quite strongly that President Obama told this unnamed "top Democrat" that "Limbaugh can go play with himself." They call it Obama's "response" and "caustic comeback." But later in the article we learn this:

Chafets writes that he reached out to Obama adviser David Axelrod, "whom I know slightly," but Axelrod didn't return calls. Then Chafets spoke to "a very senior Democratic activist with whom I'm friendly" who said he would convey the message.

A day or two later the adviser responded, "Limbaugh can play with himself." Chafets wouldn't name the aide or say whether the quote was directly from Obama.

So now we're going to have a round of silly, hand-wringing reports on how Obama was rude to Limbaugh, all because the New York Post can't seem to figure out the concept of attribution.

He should have just said that Limbaugh is a Jacka$$. That's a verifiable fact.

I think Obama could say pretty much anything to or about Limbaugh without being rude. That's not to say he wouldn't be perceived or labelled as rude (ask Al Franken) but considering all the things Limpy has called President Obama pretty much anything would be fair game.

He could, but he would not stoop so low. First of all I doubt Obama said that and second of all, who does limpy think he is? I thought he was supposed to be "just an entertainer". We all know he runs the GOP and all of the GOP politicians are afraid of him, but when Americans complain about the serious imbalance of conservative talk radio vs liberal they use the excuse that he is merely an entertainer instead of the chief propagandist on 600 channels misinforming millions of Americans every day.

You're right he never would and it would be politically unwise if he did. But if they were just 2 guys who would blame Obama or even think him rude if he responded to Limbaugh calling him a Nazi, a communist, a man-child, a halfrican, etc. with 'Shut up you limp d!cked, pill popping closet case.'? Just sayin'.

Why should Obama provide any credibility to El Fathead the overpaid college dropout with a personal appearance of any sort, let alone a number of hours on a golf course?

...all because the New York Post can't seem to figure out the concept of attribution.

The NYP is just another Murdoch rag. They're no more devoted to accuracy than FAUX Nooze.

Limbaugh can't "play with himself". All that OxyContin he took probably shrivelled Little Rush up to the size of an unshelled peanut......

Of course this was the first item Rush noted today on his show. Rush's show is a combination of self-promotion (look at me, the media is talking about me!!!), liberal/progressive/Obama/Clinton bashing (which he managed to do in the oxycontext of this item), and Reagan is god. Rush has been phoning (phonying?) it in now for years. Pathetic.
