Yuba City census shooting echoes census threats of CNN's Erick Erickson

May 24, 2010 7:52 pm ET by Oliver Willis

Back in April, CNN pundit Erick Erickson said he would "pull out my wife's shotgun and see how that little ACS twerp likes being scared at the door" if a representative of the Census Department's American Community Survey tried to arrest him for not filling out his form. And now this from Yuba City, CA:

A Yuba City woman who police say was involved in a confrontation with a U.S. Census worker was shot and killed by Yuba City officers after allegedly refusing to drop a shotgun pointed at the officers, according to the Yuba City Police Department.

...

Census Bureau spokesman Sonny Le said a census worker arrived at the home sometime around 8 p.m. Thursday. After refusing to submit to census questions, the worker said  the residents aimed a gun at her.

Census workers are gathering information that is important to the future of American communities. The last thing they need is a CNN pundit unnecessarily adding hostility to the atmosphere.

I suspect that some in the right-wing media will blame the officers.

I was reading a RightWing site about this same story..
ALL the comments were about how these cops were the bad guys for killing her.. how they had no right to be there .. called them Nazi's and how it was sign the Gov. was out of control.. it was nuts. on and on about how bad the Cops were..

Nobody said a word about how she pointed a gun at a person who knocked on her door.. how that person called the cops and how she pointed a loaded gun at them..
The Census worker had a RIGHT to do a Job..
The Census worker had the RIGHT to call the police AFTER a threat..
The Police had the RIGHT to respond to a call and with gun fire when a gun was pointed at them..
The Lady had a right to own a gun.. sit in her house and NOT answer the door if she didn't want to..
She had NO right to point a gun at ANYONE..
I don't own guns.. but I am smart enough to know that if I pull one out.. somebody is getting shot.. or I wouldn't be pulling it from a holster.. I hope most gun owners feel the same..

I stabbed a man to death who broke into my house.. all self defense.. a knife was a rough item to HAVE to use.. I understand wanting to own a gun for PROTECTION from ATTACK.. but not as a tool for the foolish to try to scare people..
I have been a pacifist since this tragedy happened in my life.. I see the whole affair as I Lost the fight.. The intruder MADE me respond to his actions.. He died.. but I paid in other ways.. much deeper then death..
I feel sorry for the lady.. but also and a bit more for the Police that had to kill her.. Just a shame all around..

Good comments from you all I think.

I know plenty of hard core right wingers where I work (I work for the Army on an Army post outside of DC). Most, if not all of them, own guns of various types, sizes and so on. They have only the uptmost respect for their firearms, and they are what I would call very and highly responsible users. One guy I know has said the same thing. If he un-holsters his weapon, it is only going to be because either his life is under threat, or his family's life is under threat, and that's it (unless of course he's just out shooting). This is a man who was in Army SF for years, and has killed a few people in his time (he was in Vietnam, and other operations post Vietnam).

This woman is dead, unfortunately, because she was stupid.

And yet Erick Erickson is alive. So it's a crapshoot.
