EXCLUSIVE: Fish and Wildlife Service debunks "ludicrous" Fox report that Obama gave "Major Strip" of AZ to Mexico
June 16, 2010 8:37 pm ET by Todd Gregory
As we pointed out, Fox Nation used the preposterous headline "Obama Gives Back Major Strip of AZ to Mexico" in trumpeting a Fox News report about a closure of land in a national wildlife refuge in Arizona:
In the June 15 report, America Live guest host Shannon Bream says, "A massive stretch of Arizona now off limits to Americans. Critics say the administration is, in effect, giving a major strip of the Southwest back to Mexico."
There are a few problems with this: A representative of the refuge told Media Matters that the "massive stretch" of land is about five miles square, it's been closed since 2006, and it obviously hasn't been given back to Mexico.
Bonnie Swarbrick, who is the public information officer for the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona, said that the area in the refuge bordering Mexico was "closed in 2006 during the construction of a vehicle barrier." (That would have been more than two years before Obama even took office). Work on the vehicle barrier progressed into the construction of a 12-foot fence along the part of the refuge that borders Mexico, which is about seven miles long. The area has been kept closed "to allow the Border Patrol to do their work," she said.
Swarbrick added that the small strip of land that is closed makes up "less than 0.03 percent" of the refuge and said that the rest of the reserve is still open to the public. [UPDATE: A subsequent press release from the Fish and Wildlife Service made clear that the closed land makes up about 3 percent of the refuge.]
As for the Fox Nation headline, Swarbrick called it "totally false" and said the notion that America had given the land back to Mexico is "ludicrous."

One of the most misleading aspects of the Fox News report is the on-screen map that accompanied it:

Glancing at the map, you'd probably think the red outline indicates the closed area.
Look again. At the bottom of the red outline, a small area along the U.S.-Mexico border is shaded yellow -- the same color used to indicate the border itself. That represents the area that is actually closed.
It's difficult to figure out where Fox comes up with this stuff, but it seems that this may have originated on a website called "U.S. Border Fire Report." A June 14 article there is headlined "The U.S. Gov: giving parts of Arizona back to Mexico."
U.S. Border Fire Report is run by a writer named Michael Webster, who is also Examiner.com's "LA National Security Examiner." Webster posted the report on that site, too.
What does it take to become an "Examiner"? Well, there are "more than 24,000 Examiners across North America," and the application to become one requires the submission of "a writing sample, short biography, a brief explanation of your expertise and basic contact information." Examiner.com says that "spelling and grammar will also be evaluated as part of the selection process."
Is it possible that when Bream reported that "critics" are saying the closure of this area is, in effect, returning it to Mexico, she was referring to sources like Webster?
UPDATE: Fox is still claiming "Obama Gives Back Major Strip of AZ to Mexico" despite the fact that (a) this is obviously not true, and (b) even a separate FoxNews.com article now acknowledges that the area has been closed since 2006.

They placed that Lie on the Air-Waves in hopes of a Tea-Party Reaction.
There's Plenty of Truth to hit Obama with, but why bother, that's not the Goal.
Portray the President as Sub-Human & Anti-American & then deny him the White Vote at the Polls.
Speak truth to power.
Mr. News
What kills me about FOX (one of many things) is that they will spread a ridiculously false allegation as gospel truth...but when the myth is debunked FOX viewers never find out about it. Amazing...what has happened to this country?
I probably could give you more examples...such as how many FOX viewers still believe Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11?
/snark
In my church I have a man that keeps sending out (to a HUGE mailing list) these hate-filled, racists, birther and anti-immigrant e-mails that parrot faux, newsmax etc. points and then puts the (or it was there when he got it) "if you love God you will forward this, but if you hate Christianity, you will delete it" and other ridiculous things like that. So it is not JUST those hate wing radio and TV, it is an ENORMOUS e-mail campaign to spread this stuff and convince them it is OK to believe this way, even specifically against Christian values. It is insidious, and you cannot argue with them about the falsehoods. Facts don't matter and they do it too I have heard many times! (they even call snopes a "far-left" site so that if you use snopes as a fact check, they use that as an excuse not to believe the truth.
It is more then frightening!
That's absolute bullsh*t, as your examples demonstrate. These people are dangerous, and the only weapon we have against them is to expose their lies.
Some people will always believe the propaganda, no matter how much evidence to the contrary, so there's not much to be done about them. All we can do is try to persuade the "independents" who don't pay that much attention to politics. They hear their Troglodyte neighbors ranting about Obama the Anti Christ, and figure it must be true, or Joe Sixpack wouldn't be saying it.
The Democrats have to figure out a way to reach these people.
Amen. The admonition to "not feed the trolls" actually feeds these folks and ignoring them allows their BS to stand unanswered.
I don't say "don't feed the trolls" without also debunking their nonsense! For you to suggest that I DO that, or that anyone else does that, is ridiculous.
And saying "don't feed the trolls" after debunking their nonsense and mocking them does NOT feed them to any detrimental extent. It hopefully cuts them OFF from further garnering of negative attention if people will heed the warning. It's not possible to NOT give them SOME attention, because it IS necessary to debunk what they say!
Now, some posts are SO outrageous, so off-topic and so void of any 'content' that there's not much purpose in debunking what they say, and so there are SOME troll posts that should simply be ignored. But for the most part, as I have said countless times, the troll posts should be debunked by ONE person, mocked by that same person, and then OTHER POSTERS should avoid feeding the troll.
How is it possible that you don't understand this yet? Oh, I know, because it's almost certainly that you DO understand this, but framing it in the way that you did is the ONLY way to attack me, and your personal animus just wouldn't let you avoid doing so!
Thanks for showing everyone how you'll behave at times.
People know better than to send me political e-mails. I e-mail them back and tell them to remove me from their forward list. LOL!
The truth DOES work to crater their efforts.
You need to briefly debunk the nonsense, mock them for believing it in the first place, and then tell others that they should recognize the source and question anything else they say since it's been documented that they believed nonsense and then spread it this time!
Just another example of how Fox is NOT a legit news organization.
That way they would be "just asking".
Faux News:
You will believe everything we tell you.
Barack Obama is a Kenyan.
Democrats are evil.
Republicans are good.
The government should stay out of your life but; not your bedroom.
It's been said before, but the only entity that can fight this is the Free Press, or what's left of it.
Tiny slivers of the Real Media are fighting back. MMFA, Huffington Post, MSNBC... but until the Big Boys like CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS and major Newspapers start kicking FOX in the ass, it will never stop.
Fox's M.O. is simply to keep throwing random talking points against a wall, and then zealously go with anything that shows signs of sticking.
Period.
1) It's not a major strip, it's an area 5 miles square.
2) Did you read this?
Who was president in 2006, Dr. Squawks? Was it Obama? If not, then how the hell could "Obama give back" anything?
3) The sheriff who was interviewed is the same guy who was in the McCain ad by the fence. He is the sheriff of Pinal County which is NOT a border county and which doesn't have anything to do with the fence.
So, is it Fox who is putting the same "standard liberal twist" on things? Imagine that.
Now, try REALLY hard to follow this, squawks, because I'm not going to come back to this thread.
What Fox posted on Fox Nation and what their "straight news" reporter reported about this story was full of blatant lies. Obama did NOT give this strip of land back to Mexico as Fox Nation and Ms. Beam said, it was closed in 2006. Who was president in 2006, squawks? It's not a "major strip" of land, it's 5 miles square strip of land. That sheriff you were watching is not a border sheriff. His county, Pinal, is in south central Arizona.
Really, try harder to pay attention and stay on topic, dumba**.
the Mexican drug cartell and human smuggelers
"liberal twist"?
where.
point it out please.
