Where did all those weather stories on Drudge go?

June 21, 2010 11:34 pm ET by Will Bunch

There are some things I'll always remember about the winter months of 2010. My travels among the Tea Party, for one thing, and getting stuck in Nashville to watch the Saints finally win a Super Bowl. Oh yeah -- and the non-stop parade of weather stories on the Drudge Report -- snowbound D.C., blizzards threatening public hearings on climate change.

Here's what Drudge and his pals were up to back in early February:

Earlier this week, Rush Limbaugh and other conservative commentators made light of the fact that the announcement of the creation of a new federal climate service on Monday had to be conducted by conference call, rather than news conference, because the federal government was shuttered by the storm.

Matt Drudge, who delights in tweaking climate-change enthusiasts, noted on his Web sitethat a Senate hearing on global warming this week was canceled because of the weather.

As the first blizzard howled last weekend, the Virginia Republican Party put up an advertisement on the Web — titled “12 Inches of Global Warming” — criticizing two Virginia Democrats, Representatives Rick Boucher and Tom Perriello, who voted for the federal cap-and-trade legislation last year.

So guess what. Summer arrived officially today.

And it's hot. Real hot. Hotter than it normally is this time of year, and it's going to stay that way for a while. Here in Philadelphia, the mercury is going to top out at or above 90 all week, with high humidity. So I raced over to the Drudge Report, and you'll be shocked, shocked to learn there was nothing there about high temps or how that was going to change the debate on manmade global warming.

And truth be told, a hot week in June in the U.S. Northeast shouldn't impact the debate on climate change -- because that's only weather. What we need to watch is climate -- longer and more gradual shifts in planetary temperatures over time -- and the news in that department ought to be Drudge-worthy (he does rule our world, after all) even it it is not:

New data from some of the world's leading climate researchers and institutions suggest that 2010 is shaping up to be one of the warmest years ever recorded.

Scientists at the US National Snow and Ice Centre Data Centre (NSIDC) report today that Arctic sea ice – frozen seawater that floats on the ocean surface – is now at its lowest physical extent ever recorded for the time of year, suggesting that it is on course to break the previous record low set in 2007.

Satellite monitoring by the NSIDC in Boulder, Colorado, shows that the melting of sea ice has been unusually fast this year, with as much as 40,000 sq km now disappearing daily.

Meanwhile, here's a good new piece from Cynthia Tucker of the the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on the dangers of climate change denial in Washington.

Ironically, there's new talk of a push for energy legislation in Washington -- but it's because of the BP oil spill, and not because the earth is getting hotter.

And it's certainly not because of the pictures and headlines on the Drudge Report.

Not only is there nothing the slightest bit wrong about this article, there isn't anything the slightest bit wrong about MMFA's Hannity freedom concert articles, and there is plenty wrong with Drudge's weather articles.

Yet wesley's post sounds negative for some reason...

They sure have been quiet since we've been having 90+ degree weather since early April here in the NYC area.

Wesley, you're having reading difficulties again. MMFA wasn't the one who did the "expose" on Hannity's sham concerts. CREW filed the complaints. It was simply reported here and elsewhere. The investigation is ongoing and the group which reports ratings for various charities has put a disclaimer (a two star rating) on Hannity and North's sham concerts stating that the charity "needs improvement."

Again, this was NOT MMFA's expose, it was simply reporting complaints made by CREW. Hannity's sham concerts had been under investigation since 2007.

I hope everyone notices Wesley the weasel's blatant attempt to derail the topic - that's the way a weasel behaves - dishonestly trying to distract you from the actual subject.

From the dictionary definition, a weasel is a sneaky, untrustworthy, or insincere person. Wesley posted in this thread without ANY intention of sincerely addressing the POINT of this thread in any way. He did it in a sneaky way by actually providing ONE quote from the MMFA article, and acting like his derailment is therefore actually relevant - but of course it's not. He is therefore untrustworthy.

Don't forget all the crazy floods we have been seeing all over the world lately. South Western France had it's largest flood in 200 years.

No individual weather event can be definitively tied to global climate change, but you're right, we CAN tie multiple extreme weather events to climate change.

It's not surprising that a week or so after WE get hit with flooding here in the USA, that Europe gets hit - the climatic events move from west to east, and so the same energy impulses often hit them a few days after they hit us.

It was 101 degrees in Nashville, yesterday. Where are all the Troglodytes? Pretending they never said snow in winter disproves Global Warming, that's where.

This is all a game to them; they'll do the same thing next winter.

Nerz, it may not even be deliberate on the part of the right wing posters. Of course Drudge and the rest of the media know what they're doing, and will ignore the topic all summer, but it's possible that the slugs who use Drudge as a news source don't notice the calculated cycle of Climate Change stories.

Remember, as dishonest as most of the wingnut posters are, to be fair, you always have to allow for stupidity as an excuse too.

Forget facts. It was cold last winter and there was snow on the ground, and that's all the proof I need.

Yeah, it really was cold here last winter and we had TONS of snow on the ground and the very first blizzard in our city's recorded history . . . all of which is a sign of climate change created by global warming. My 97 year old grandmother couldn't remember ever seeing this much snow.
