Michelle Malkin: "The U.S. Department of Illegal Alien Labor"

June 25, 2010 10:10 am ET by Mike Burns

In her column today, Michelle Malkin censured Labor Secretary Hilda Solis' campaign to inform undocumented workers about the wage standards to which they are entitled under federal law. But as Media Matters has reported, "the Labor Department's policy of enforcing labor laws without regard to immigration status long predates the Obama administration; moreover, the enforcement of labor laws is widely seen -- even by those who advocate for greater restrictions on immigration -- as a key to discouraging employers from hiring unauthorized workers."

From Malkin's June 25 nationally syndicated column:

President Obama's Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is supposed to represent American workers. What you need to know is that this longtime open-borders sympathizer has always had a rather radical definition of "American." At a Latino voter registration project conference in Los Angeles many years ago, Solis asserted to thunderous applause, "We are all Americans, whether you are legalized or not."

That's right. The woman in charge of enforcing our employment laws doesn't give a hoot about our immigration laws -- or about the fundamental distinction between those who followed the rules in pursuit of the American dream and those who didn't.

While in Congress, she opposed strengthening the border fence, supported expansion of illegal alien benefits (including driver's licenses and in-state tuition discounts), embraced sanctuary cities that refused to cooperate with federal homeland security officials to enforce immigration laws, and aggressively championed a mass amnesty. Solis was steeped in the pro-illegal alien worker organizing movement in Southern California and was buoyed by amnesty-supporting Big Labor groups led by the Service Employees International Union. She has now caused a Capitol Hill firestorm over her new taxpayer-funded advertising and outreach campaign to illegal aliens regarding fair wages:

[...]

To be sure, no one should be scammed out of "fair wages." Employers that hire and exploit illegal immigrant workers deserve full sanctions and punishment. But it's the timing, tone-deafness and underlying blanket amnesty agenda of Solis' illegal alien outreach that has so many American workers and their representatives on Capitol Hill rightly upset.

I have no problems with immigrants. They come from someplace and try to improve their life or the lives of their children. They put up with a lot of garbage when they do it. Some of them come here and marry or have children. Their children are American citizens. Conservatives call these Americans "Anchor Babies." And the only thing I find more offensive than calling someone an Anchor Baby is when an Anchor Baby does it. The hypocrisy just turns my stomach. I wonder what a true picture of Malicious' family would show about their immigrant activities, beyond spawning this harridan?

I tried some of the fact check sites to see if Solis ever actually said, "We are all Americans, whether you are legalized or not." Does anyone know? And if she did say it, in what context? This is the kind of stuff the wingnuts put on a permanent loop and repeat forever.

Considering that Malkin is the child of immigrants, why does this sound so much like "I've got mine, now let's shut the doors on everyone else!"

Malkin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the first of two children to Philippine citizens Apolo Maglalang, a physician in training, and Rafaela, a homemaker and schoolteacher.[3] Her parents had arrived in the United States earlier that year on an employer-sponsored visa. I don't get the NOR Americans part of your post. Is that just a term I have never heard or a mis-spelling?

Even thoug I consider my post a little off topic (e.g. Labor law and illegal aliens) I was trying to make the point that:

          A) Certain people are going to attack the current administration no matter what.

          B) Some people are "for" something only until they "have it", then they want to start screening out all the "undesirables".

          you are an idiot.

          Why thank you!

Nope, didn't comment on that. Please read closer next time.

Nope, didn't comment on that either. Just pointing out that no matter what this administration does people like Malkin will continue to beat their partisan drum and, as a child of immigrants, that it seems a little specious of her to seem to want to lock out people who only want the same chances as she has received.
If you don't want people crossing the border because of the job opportunites here then remove the job opportunities.

Are you seriously fallaciously rationalizing the act of condoning an illegal activity? It's ok because others have done it? 2 wrongs don't make a right.

      Seriously!?

The same thing that happened to the war on drugs. Much monies spent, populations harassed and imprisoned. Effective actions and policies derided and ingored. Satisfaction limited to some pain delivered to disliked populations.

The only "justice" brought to someone who is here legally is that they are deported. They are not thrown in jail or fined.

The Department of Labor's policy of educating "illegal aliens" on their rights to receive equal pay makes sense logically. If illegal immigrants demand to be paid the same as someone here legally, it will take away the incentive for companies to hire them in the first place.

This law is about the behavior of EMPLOYERS, not employees, so it doesn't matter whether the employees are here legally or not!

And, in reality, it's the employers who are the biggest problem here - they CHOOSE to employ undocumented workers and they fail to verify their citizenship status. They take advantage of those people to pay them lower wages and fewer benefits.

We need a guest worker program to protect those workers and to protect our borders. If undocumented workers can't get jobs, they won't come across the border to get a job - it's pretty simple!

It's common knowledge that federally, immigration laws (at least those that criminalize illegal migration) are a joke. For heaven's sake, cities openly defy federal law to form sanctuary cities and the federal government doesn't even bat an eye. They'll go after pot smokers in CA, but they wont go after tax evading illegal immigrant or their sleazy employers. It's absolutely ridiculous. Illegal immigration is a crime and so is harboring/employing an illegal immigrant. Instead of prosecuting both with one fell swoop, they prosecute neither.
        Fantastic.

Just a minor point or two.
I believe it was the previous administration that was going out of its way to arrest medicinal pot smoker in CA, the newest administration, not so much.

Most illegal immigrants that have a job are not evading taxes.
(Assuming they aren't paid in cash)
Taxes are taken out of their checks just like everyone else, not to mention all those other taxes, sales, gas, etc.
If taxes aren't being taken out of their checks then you need to talk to their employer about that, oh, and the fact that they hired an illegal.

Any illegals that are working cash only jobs may not be paying income taxes on their income but; I don't think that is at a higher instance than legal immigrants (or citizens) that are being paid in cash.

and the fact that they hired an illegal.

Uh, no. Taxing legal residents or non-citizens that are here legally is part of the price for working in America.

If you meant illegals paying taxes, that is different.
