Welcome to a long, hot summer of right-wing race baiting

July 09, 2010 8:51 am ET by Eric Boehlert

If you thought last summer’s Obama Beer Summit was troubling in terms of how far-right media partisans wallowed in the topic of race, early indications are this simmering season is going to be much worse as Fox News and its brigade of haters fan the flame of division and distrust.

There’s no question that race peddlers went nuts last summer over the controversy involving Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge, MA police Sgt. James Crowley, as well as Obama’s later involvement in the story. But this time around, ‘wingers have removed all mechanical governors and are talking about race in America the way that perhaps they’ve always wanted to talk about it during the Obama era; in unapologetically ugly, resentful and divisive tones.

How else do you describe the emerging right-wing meme, pushed by Rush Limbaugh, that Obama is really some sort of Black Manchurian Candidate, fixated on exacting revenge from prejudice white America?

Aided by a storyline that involves a tiny hate group called the New Black Panther Party (so much more menacing that an aging Harvard prof!), the GOP Noise Machine has gone loco over a comically porous story of voter intimidation; a tale that even one Republican official with intimate knowledge has dismissed as “small potatoes” and not worth any  attention.

Conservative commentators, however, have been quick to run with the phony story, calling it evidence of racial bias in the Obama administration and fitting it into a series of grand, race-based conspiracies. Rush Limbaugh's, for instance, claimed the fact that the Department of Justice did not seek criminal charges against the New Black Panther Party was "the natural course of events" with "a black attorney general" and "a black president."

RedState stressed how it was an “African-American” AG who supposedly dropped the charges. (Emphasis in original.) Blogger Ed Morrissey suggested the DOJ’s decision amounted to a "compensation for historical injustices,” and that “after more than a century of black voters being intimidated at the polls, it just wouldn't seem fair to prosecute a black group for voter intimidation."

Morrissey’s evidence? He didn’t have any.

Of course, Limbaugh, RedState, and Morrissey all ignored the facts of New Black Panther Party case in order to clear the path for dishonest race-baiting.  The right-wing has to ignore those facts, otherwise there’s no there there. (i.e. The Bush DOJ treated a case of voter intimidation involving right-wing Minutemen the exact same way the Obama DOJ handled the New Black Panther case.)

But apparently with the New Black Panther story in the media bloodstream, far-right players suddenly feel free to let the race-baiting fly:

Honestly, we haven’t seen this kind of high-profile, race-based fearmongering since last July, when Glenn Beck spent the final full week of that month unleashing a torrent of ugly and hateful allegations about Obama, driven at the time by the Gates/Crowley controversy:

But Beck soon retreated, at least temporarily, from that nasty line of attack. Why?

Because on the morning of July 28, he appeared on Fox & Friends and announced that the President of the United States, who was raised by his white mother, had “exposed himself as a guy” with a “deep seated hatred for white people,” and that Obama was in fact a “racist.” The repercussions to the astonishingly hateful broadside were swift. Not from Fox News of course, which holds Beck to no discernable standard. Instead, the repercussions came from the marketplace and within months Beck had lost approximately 80 [[200]] advertisers and his TV show was virtually void of blue chip sponsors who were willing to appear on his show.

Looking back, Beck, like an overeager toddler anxious to be the first on the playground swings, might have simply sprinted out too fast in front of his playmates last summer when he went on national television and announced the President of the United States hated white people. But as irrational Obama Derangement Syndrome has continued to ferment for an additional twelve months, and as radical right partisans continue to dream up all kinds of dark conspiratorial tales about the president, Beck once again seems comfortable playing the race card, and playing it hard.

And so do lots of other Obama haters, like Limbaugh, who’s had lots of practice in the past:

  • "We are being told that we have to hope [Obama] succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles ... because his father was black."
  • "I do believe" Obama is an "angry black guy."”
  • “Obama is "more African in his roots than he is American" and is "behaving like an African colonial despot."

Just typically rancid stuff. What’s new now though, is the jaw-dropping notion that Limbaugh’s pushing about how Obama’s policies, which the AM talker insists are ruining this country, can be explained by the president’s burning desire to exact revenge on America for its historical sin of slavery and long-running discrimination against minorities. In fact, that’s why Obama ran for president in the first place -- to drive unemployment up and make white people suffer economic hardships just like blacks have for decades.

Why is this kind of aggressive race-baiting thriving now? Aside from the arrival of the New Black Panther Party (non) story, it’s because Limbaugh, and the rest of the full-time Obama haters who make millions spinning increasingly wild tales about the almost uncontrollable evil that drives Obama and his fellow Democrats, needs to continually come up with some sort of explanation for why Obama is bent on destroying America and shredding the Constitution, demonizing this country, trashing our allies, and purposefully making life miserable for most. I mean, that’s not typically what U.S. presidents do, right?

The professional haters have to at least invent some reason -- an Obama motivation -- as to why. And right now the latest answer (coming in the wake of claims that Obama’s love of socialism, and communism, and fascism was to blame) is it’s because of racism. Specifically, the reason Obama wants to destroy what makes America great is because Obama himself hates America and its history of injustice. So now that Obama’s sitting in the White House he’s exacting revenge and one way to do that is to team up with the New Black Panther Party.

Got that? In the summer of 2010, that’s the narrative being constructed and re-enforced within the right-wing media: Obama is some kind of Black Manchurian Candidate who ran for president in order to score payback against whitey.

That’s pretty astonishing stuff, but in terms of chronicling all this obvious and unapologetic ugliness, where has the Beltway press been? On that front, it’s been mostly media silence this summer.

I assume journalists are nervous about the blowback that would come with calling out the right-wing media for so blatantly playing the race card. So instead of doing their job, let alone stepping out on a limb and actually condemning the hate brigade, journalists mostly look away. Although honestly, if the White House were currently occupied by the first Jewish president, for instance, and his hardcore partisan critics spent their days and nights broadcasting trumped-up allegations about how the president hated Christians, it’s hard to imagine how the Beltway press corps wouldn’t considered that to be newsworthy, not to mention deplorable.

But today, it’s mostly crickets as the radical right engages in naked race-baiting -- another reason the forecast calls for racial malice all summer long.

That's because what's left of the Free Press has been effectively castrated by baseless accusations of "Liberal Bias" from the Republican propagandists.

It is exactly as the Troglodytes intended. They have maneuvered themselves into a position of Media supremacy. Despite their disingenuous mewling to the contrary, Conservatives dominate the political messaging in this country.

In the rare cases where real journalists call them on their racism, all they have to do is whine about "liberal bias" and pretend to be the victim. It usually works.

And the most comical thing about the video Fox uses in it's hit piece on "the new Black Panther" party is that in the bacground you can clearly see people walking in and out of the building. There is a White woman walking around behind them on her cellphone. She was, or is not intimidated by these goons. This kind of red meat plays good for Fox's base but does not advance their agenda very far anywhere else. By the way exactly how many people are members of this "new Black Panther" party anyway? So far as I know they only show three guys.

That is a great point. From these stories, you'd think there was an army of Black Panthers. This fact should be broadcast repeatedly because it brings the story back to reality. 11 people are not "everywhere".

But then, that's pretty true of Fox in general, and I believe it's all they're really shooting for.

This latest New Black Panthers obsession is in the same zone as the O'Keefe/ ACORN hoax, the vast majority of Americans see through the BS and laugh at it, and the Fox target demo swallows it whole and goes into hysterics.

That should read "a tiny left-wing hate group", but I digress...

I'm guessing if this was white on black intimidation no matter how "tiny" it would not be listed as "comical" or "porous". Voter intimidation is wrong, no matter how "tiny".

I guess when all else fails (it's failing fast for you) go back to the tried and true, right wing are racist meme eh E?

Hey Corpman Tbone, a hate group is a hate group, no matter what their political leaning happens to be. The problem with the rest of your statement is that since no one made a complaint about intimidation, there was no intimidation. Since you think voter intimidation is wrong, I suppose you are equally outraged that the Bush administration failed to charge the Minuteman who was outside a polling station in Arizona with a pistol strapped to his side and was "questioning" hispanic voters on their eligibility to vote.

      from the i'll-see-your-race-card-and-raise-you-one-hate-speech dept:

"i hate white people – all of them! every last iota of a cracker, i hate 'em." "you want freedom? you're gonna have to kill some crackers! you're gonna have to kill some of their babies!"
      minister king shamir shabazz

now that's clear and unequivocal racism... but if you want to play footsie and pretend rush and beck are racists without actually having to call them racist, just trot out the lame-@$$ quotes above, the type of which there is no shortage of from liberals:

obama is "light-skinned" and has "no negro dialect unless he wanted to have one."
      harry reid

"i mean, you got the first mainstream african-american who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."
      joe biden

"if obama was a white man, he would not be in this position."

How many other "racist" quotes do you have from Harry Reid other than the one he apologized for? What else has Ferraro said? How about Biden? Point is they immediately recognized theor error and repented. As far as Rush, Beck, Savage we get this crap everyday. no apologies nothing but the same crap day after day. And to disinginuously focus on one Black hate group when the numbers and memberships of white racist hate groups went through the roof after Obama's election is but par for the course because in right-wing world even if they are the majority and outnumber their foes 800-1 they can still play the victim card.
Also Mookie, if Beck, Limbaugh et all would stop using racist language they would have to report on it. Unbelievable. I guess racists and bigots have to twist themselves into pretzels to prove it's not them that are racists it's the other guy. Thanks for more proof.

The scary part about this is this is the same type of hate speech that has been used in the past to rile up racists into action. Think about the 8-28 rally. There will be tens of thousands of white people there and some will be agitated about the "kill whitey" clip so when the couple of hundred of Black people there do ANYTHING remotely aggressive in their minds there will be some type of confrontation. I don't want this to happen but with all the hype these guys are creating this is almost inevitable. The whole Blacks are taking over meme is not new but we've never had a Black president so it was never needed nationally until now. This fear is why things like the Tulsa/Springfield/Chicago ect. race riots happened. To racists there is no difference between Barack Obama, Samir Shabazz or PilotX so if one of those guys steps out of line they have to punish the first n&%%er they see. Sad these folks want to go back to those times. Oh well, the more things change...........

Two things. First for the Limbaugh challenge. I admit I do not regualrly listen to Rush but I have tried. It is uncomfortable to listen to his show. He is a bigot and when he goes off his bigotted rants I can't stand it anymore and have to turn him off. He makes untrue statements often and never corrects them. The one time I listened to his show that stands out was when he saw that a person named Sharrod Brown was running for the senate in Ohio and because of his name Mr. Limbaugh made the famous statement "Sharrod, who's obviously an African America", why was that obvious? He was wrong of course but since he mispronounced his name and made it sound "Black" it had to be obvious right? Why even bring up his race? Thi sfrom a guy who says he doesn't see race. Sorry but you're right, I can't stomach listening to that man. I challenge you to listen to a whole speech by Shamir Shabazz. You do that and I'll listen to Rush for a week. Deal?
As far as Mr. Parks, whom I've debated via e-mail about his GOP facts what does this have to do with anything? I'm not a Democrat but since you sent it I'll bite. Nothing in that article is new, I study history and I'm well aware of the history of the Democratic Party but for those who want to bring up history 50+ years ago why did southern white voters shift to the GOP after the 1964 CRA passed? Why was the GOP 2008 convention the least diverse in recent history and why are there ZERO Black congressmen/women in 2010? If you want to bash the Democrats for their history you also have to answer for the GOP's present.

Good points. What Rush's defenders fail to comprehend in their search for equivalency is intent. Harry Reid's comments may be ignored, or a generational tone-deafness, but who really thinks that equates to bigotry?

Rush, on the other hand, has shown time and time again an animosity toward African Americans -- or, more precisely, successful liberal African Americans, whom he believes reached their status by white guilt rather than merit. When he maligns Obama or other black leaders, his intent is clearly hostile. That's the difference, Mookie, between talking about race and being racist. Why is that so hard for the right to grasp?

Ah, the old he has Black friends defense. The racist in Louisiana that refuses to marry interracial couples had Black friends too, he even lets them use his bathroom so what's the point? Here's the rub as I have had this discussion with Mr. Parks on a few occasions. While many conservatives may not be racists we must first agree on the definition of racism. Actually Tim Wise explains more eloquentlycheck the latest blog. To have this debate one must answer the following questions, as you have not done. Which organization seems more racist, the one with not one Black elected official in the congress or the one with all of the Black elected congressmen/women? Which organization appears more racist, the one with an elected Black president or the one that had only white males as serious candidates for the position? One cannot seriously claim that an organization that has the support of the majority of Black, Latino, Indigenous, Gay, Asian and disabled people is racist/discriminatory. You want to talk about condensention, how is it that you don't think we know what's better for our lives and communities? If you call acknowledging I exist and have certain ideas that I feel should be addressed is patronizing then you're right, the GOP will never in its current form attract any large groups of people of color. While not racist on its face if we delve into the matter I can show you how the GOP excuses and encourages racism. As far as Bob Parks, he is a member of Project 21 which is a front group that is supposed to be a voice for Black conservatives but is staffed almost totally by conservative whites. No one in our community takes him or these types of organizations seriously Read this. I applaud your attempts to paint the left and people of color as the real racists and give bigots like Limbaugh a pass but the vast majority of people of color know the real deal.

the black friends point is not a defense, it's a practical measure of mutual admiration between fellow men... i should know how futile it is trying to convince people here rush is not a racist, but the examples cited to prove otherwise is heavy on emotion and lacking of any real evidence...

which party seems more racist?... i'm not saying democrats are racists, i'm merely pointing out the pass they get for being defenders of civil rights when they have done nothing but promote an entitlement society of welfare dependence and affirmative action... people of color are conditioned to vote democrat thinking they can't otherwise achieve because of racism lurking around every corner... but this notion of a long, hot summer is just the distraction both parties revel in while they rob this country blind...

i fail to see the relevance of dubya's lost year in alabama to this thread... but in that regard, you ought to enjoy this book that documents how the bush's managed to be in the periphery of many major american historical events, it's downright creepy:

The part about the "southern strategy" was relevant. You know, the GOP's pandering to souther bigots that don't particularly like people that look like me. The whole voting to keep the confederate flag on the grounds of the S.C. statehouse, the re-establishing of confederate history month and all. All of those measure were GOP sponsored. Say again how the Dems are the real racists?

preservation of southern heritage is not racist... if you are consistent in your views of symbolism, perhaps you have called for the banning of the stars and stripes flag, under which slavery and the native american holocaust occurred...
