Faith group running radio ads calling out Beck for his attacks on social justice

July 15, 2010 1:46 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a July 15 press release from Faith in Public Life:

Glenn Beck is being followed on his national tour this summer by a Christian radio ad calling out the Fox News host for attacking churches that preach about social justice.

Faithful America, an online community of more than 100,000 people of faith, is sponsoring the ads, which will run in cities Beck visits on his national summer tour, beginning with his July 31st event in Westbury, NY and continuing through later stops in New Jersey, Washington, DC, and South Carolina.

Listen to the full ad here.

Beck has frequently used his television and radio programs to distort the Christian commitment to social justice, a central principle of Christianity rooted in Biblical values and also emphasized in diverse religious traditions.

In March, the host urged his listeners to leave their churches if pastors talked about social or economic justice. Even after prominent clergy from across the faith and ideological spectrum refuted his arguments, Beck has continued his smear campaign by equating social justice with Marxism and Nazism.

"Would you support a leader who said Jesus' teachings can lead to Nazism or who attacks Christian pastors for preaching the full Gospel? Then why do so many Christians tune in to Glenn Beck?" the ad asks.

Beck also recently alleged that the Jewish concept of the common good led to the Holocuaust, saying, "This is exactly the kind of talk that led to the death camps in Germany." Faithful America is airing the ad on Christian stations to reach viewers and listeners who frequently tune into Beck's programs. While Beck may think he speaks for Christians, thousands have signed petitions rejecting his views and expressing their outrage. The ads are part of Faithful America's "Driven by Faith, Not by Fear" campaign, an effort to counter the fear, lies and hateful rhetoric of extreme pundits and the Tea Party.

We don't need equal justice, the same for all. We need to put one group above others. Take from some to give to others. I know that instead of me giving what I think I can afford to charity, the government should decide for me what I can afford and take it from me and waste most of it with red tape and fraud to give it to people as they see fit, whether or not I agree with whom is getting it.

We tried that, Seabiscuit. It was called "Reaganomics". It was a dismal failure.

Socialism was and is an ever bigger failure. It never has worked and as a matter of fact has killed millions around the world. But I know you don't care about that.

Sweden. Norway. Denmark. Finland. Those are pretty well run countries, and while not completely socialist, they are pretty close, and most of those countries have people who are the most content in their lives.

Pretty well run countries?? Wow you are dumb. All those countries have bankrupt social programs, and almost zero business growth. The USA is the #1 economy in the world, and you want us to have social programs like those bankrupt countries and become a 3rd world country like them too?? Of course people are content in their lives there....if you like living on a farm milking cows or raising reindeer. If you are like most Americans however withy our PS3, XBox, ipods and PC's.....then no, it wont work.

Some of you lefties just dont think outside the box.

That's not the definition of social justice and if you listened to anyone other than Glenn Beck you'd know that. Social justice is part of the official doctrine of both the Catholic and Episcopal churches. Are you accusing both of those groups of being communist fronts?

You are confusing social justice with personal responsibility. Jesus wanted every man to help other men....not politicians or government forcing people to give as they see fit. To each to their own means. There will ALWAYS be poor people. You need to learn reality. There will NEVER be this utopian world you see in hippie movies.

The problem with the christian right is that they no longer worship Christ, and use conservatism to further their christian beliefs. They worship conservatism and money and use the christian church to further their cause. And they use it very selectively.

Like every Pope for the last century. Like the best Priests I have known, and the most Christian of Parishes that I have belonged to. Like Jesus himself. If I am misguided, I am in excellent company. The Catholics, and Parishes that are opposed to social justice have been some of the meanest, and un-Christian places I have ever been.

The Catholic Church NEVER promotes social justice. Where are you getting your misinformation from?? No where do they ever say give half your money to the government, so the government can run social programs which inevitably fail and money gets stolen by politicians. Trillions of dollars are given to the poor and guess what....they are still poor. Poor people need to get out of poverty on their own. As the old saying goes....give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he can eat for his lifetime.

Socialism doesnt work. Get an education. Without hard working individuals, socialism will fail. Thats why England, Canada and all those other social countries you love to quote are going broke. Canada has actually gone the way of capitalism more lately and their economy is growing.

Also....if you want to be like Europe so much, why not just move there?? This is America and this is why we are so great. We are the leader, yet you want us to emulate Europe?? Thats absurd ideology.

            Wrong. Mark 12:13-17:

Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn't we?"

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

            "Caesar's," they replied.

Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."
And they were amazed at him.

Yes, and they did all that with slaves. You think they collected taxes and built infrastructure with it?? LOL. You are naive and uneducated. There were more slaves in Rome than Roman citizens. Romans also used their slaves as prostitutes to further increase their wealth.

Anyone who thinks taxes benefitted all citizens in Rome needs to get an education and learn some history. Slave labor built Rome.

No, He said we are all brothers and sisters and that we owed it to each other to see that all are cared for. In a tribal/clan culture, that would be individuals acting within their groups; in a complex industrial society, doing Jesus's work requires the machinery of government. The job otherwise won't get done. And I don't remember Jesus saying specifically not to allow joint action through elected government do His work. Could you please provide that citation?

If I might interject, the original definition of social justice, when used by MLK Jr, was defined as "equal opportunity". Since that time, it has morphed into meaning the re-distribution of wealth. Either way there is no Christian foundation. Jesus had no interest in social equality and challenged us to feed the poor because it's what god wants us to do, not re-distribution because it's something government wants us to do.
