Never trust Andrew Breitbart

July 21, 2010 12:11 am ET by Kate Conway

The latest Andrew-Breitbart-manufactured phony scandal is just one more nail in the coffin of Breitbart's already dismal credibility.

Breitbart was the first to post video falsely suggesting that Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod had discriminated against a white farmer -- allegations that are rapidly unraveling as they churn through the media.

The fact that Breitbart's poorly researched accusations are falling apart should be no surprise to those familiar with his handiwork. He's the one who coordinated and promoted the release of heavily edited videos purporting to show a pattern of illegal activity among ACORN employees -- but multiple investigations found no such pattern, and Breitbart, along with videographers James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles, was repeatedly caught in lies and distortions about the videos. Undaunted by his initial failure to catch ACORN breaking the law, Breitbart later announced that "deeply sensitive and highly political" ACORN documents had been discovered in a dumpster and suggested that "obstruction of justice" might have occurred, yet he never offered evidence that the documents were anything other than trash.

Breitbart again hosted O'Keefe's fact-fuzzy work in June, posting a lackluster effort to "expose" Census workers allegedly being encouraged to falsify their time sheets. Unsurprisingly, even this less-than-shocking video turned out to be edited to exclude footage that inconveniently showed a Census leader telling workers that they must carefully and accurately report on their time sheets the number of miles they drive.

The litany continues: Breitbart also latched on to blogger Jim Hoft's blatantly false and homophobic attacks on Department of Education staffer Kevin Jennings, cross-posting Hoft's tirades on BigGovernment.com. He spearheaded wild distortions of the Kenneth Gladney case, accusing the White House of "directing" town hall violence. Breitbart's websites forwarded the unfounded claim that the National Endowment for the Arts broke the law, and the sites also published an "exclusive" purporting to expose a White House visit by ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis, which turned out to be false.

In September 2009, Breitbart embedded a "shocking" video, which he claimed showed the Gamaliel Foundation praying to President Obama with phrases like "Deliver us Obama" and "Hear our cry Obama." According to the organization, the video actually shows organizers saying "Deliver us, oh God" and "Hear our cry, oh God." When Christmas rolled around, Breitbart invented an absurd scandal in three ornaments on the White House Christmas tree.

So it's not surprising that Breitbart -- who has said that his strategy is to deprive people of information they would need to evaluate his allegations -- has peddled utterly false information once again.

It's like a line that Phil Hendrie said: Breitbart may have some technical savvy in displaying content for internet users to consume and disseminate, but when it comes to him formulating his own opinions, he ain't too "breit".

Phil's nickname for him is Andrew "Not-so-breitbart."

This was on Firedoglake this morning:
"Andrew Breitbart may be a target for the U.S. Department of Justice’ Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (“CCIPS”) which is in the Criminal Division. The website, which was forwarded to this blogger by the DOJ on another issue, covers various types of crimes that involve a computer.

If Breitbart altered the video of Shirley Sherrod to make it look like she was making a statement he then called racist, he’s certainly guilty of defamation of character against Shirley Sherrod.

Breitbart may also be guilty of Internet harassment. He certainly should be made a high-profile example to discourage others from these uses of the computer and The Internet to harass a person. Enough is enough."

I hope we get to see that Anti-American punk in a court room. Just another James O'Keefe.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post, but here's something that Media Matters may be interested in.

Bozell Statement on Networks' Lack of Coverage of Racist Remarks from NAACP Speaker
      By Brent Bozell | Tue, 07/20/2010 - 15:01

Managing Editor's Note: Earlier today, Media Research Center President Brent Bozell demanded that the media cover the explosive video footage of an NAACP banquet speaker admitting her racist views and abuse of power that led to her resignation as a Department of Agriculture official yesterday. The full text of that statement is found below:

The liberal media are deliberately spiking the shocking video that reveals an NAACP banquet speaker admitting her racist views and actions. We’ve waited a full 24 hours to see if any coverage of this exposé would surface. So far, nothing but crickets. The ABC, CBS and NBC evening and morning ‘news’ shows have all failed to even mention the damning video admission that is dripping with disdain for white people and that caused the official to tender her resignation.

Worse yet, it comes from the NAACP, the same organization that has feverishly accused the Tea Parties of racism. The thoroughly untrue accusation against the Tea Parties has been propped up and propelled by the incessant reporting of these same networks. Yet they decide to thwart this story about the NAACP.

The only thing more newsworthy than the charges of racism are the hypocritical charges of racism. The media must report this scandal.

Sherrod should not only be reinstated, by given a public apology by her management, and perhaps the administration (just to drive home the point.) What's more, those same entities should issue a strong, public condemnation of Brietbart and his use of edited video in this manner, and of the media that enables him.

And any media sources that ran this story should themselves issue not only a clear correction but a public apology for doing so, including their own condemnation of Brietbart and of his brand of what he calls "journalism" but what common law calls "libel" and "slander."

(And actually, all of these entities doing such - resoring Sherrod's reputation - would actually SAVE Brietbart from getting sued by her. She's may have been a public servant, but was not a public figure until he made her one, and she'd have a pretty open and shut case here!)

Her full restoration and public exhoneration, combined with a universal (minus Fox), robust condemnation of Brietbart and what he calls journalism would represent a large nail in the coffin of his credability and career.

      He's a racist, a hypocrite and an un-American, sub-Human scumbag.

What kind of human being is so diabolical that he can manipulate someone relating a life experience that illustrates enlightenment to distort and destroy that person. Breitbart and his ilk have a special place in hell for the misery they caused that poor woman and I am sure countless others whose reputations and lives they destroyed by fabricating stories so that they could acheive their evil ends. Totally un-American!!
