Will media fall for Breitbart's attempt to spin his spectacular failure?

July 21, 2010 9:53 am ET by Jocelyn Fong

After launching what has now been conclusively shown to be an unfair and false attack on Shirley Sherrod, Andrew Breitbart is scrambling to justify his decision to post the deceptive video. He now says that his blog post -- which smeared Sherrod as racist -- was "not about Shirley Sherrod. It's not about Shirley Sherrod. I can say it 20 times. It's about the NAACP." In fact, there is ample evidence that Breitbart directly went after Sherrod.

And if his claim that the NAACP tolerates racism is based on the debunked claim that Sherrod's speech shows she is racist, doesn't his whole excuse fall apart? Well, Breitbart claimed on Fox News last night that the video proves there are racists among the NAACP because "the audience was laughing and applauding as she described how she maltreated the white farmer," and he argued that the audience did not "know that there was going to be a point of redemption" in her story.

On Good Morning America today, Breitbart again claimed that his video shows that "at an NAACP event, people are applauding racism." And he demonstrated:

Breitbart clapping

In his initial post, Breitbart described the audience reaction as "nodding approval and murmurs of recognition and agreement." And that was before we all had access to the full video and the proper context. Now, he says that the audience was "applauding" in approval of discrimination. In fact, Breitbart's claim that the audience was applauding as she "described how she maltreated the white farmer" is demonstrably false.

First of all, the full video shows that the audience did have reason to understand where Sherrod's speech was going and that her story was about the importance of moving beyond race. Before getting into the story about the "white farmer," Sherrod previewed the lesson that she learned:

[16:34] SHERROD: God is good. I can tell you that. When I made that commitment, I was making that commitment to black people -- and to black people only. But you know God will show you things and he'll put things in your path so that you realize that the struggle is really about poor people --

AUDIENCE: All right. All right.

SHERROD: -- you know. The first time I was faced with having to help a white farmer save his farm. He took a long time talking but he was trying to show me he was superior to me -- I knew what he was doing.

Her story begins around 16:30 in the video. Contrary to Breitbart's claim, the audience does not applaud at any point during the story about her interaction with the farmer.

Nevertheless, media outlets are already uncritically reporting Breitbart's attempt to cover his ass. The New York Times reports:

"They're trying to make this about me and Shirley Sherrod. This is about the N.A.A.C.P.," he said by phone. He said that the civil rights group had "spent an inordinate amount of airtime trying to brand the Tea Party as racist" while tolerating racism itself.

The Washington Times wrote:

Mr. Breitbart, whose Big Government blog posted the video, said Tuesday that the point was the NAACP audience's reaction to Mrs. Sherrod's account of her past actions.

"This was not about Shirley Sherrod. This was about the NAACP attacking the Tea Party and this is showing racism at an NAACP event. I did not ask for Shirley Sherrod to be fired," he told CNN, adding that Mrs. Sherrod "should have the right to defend herself. But what you see on the video are people ... applauding her overt racism that she is representing."

And the Los Angeles Times reported:

Breitbart told CNN's "John King, USA" that releasing the video was "not about Shirley Sherrod."

"This was about the NAACP attacking the tea party, and this is showing racism at an NAACP event," he said.

How can these outlets actually repeat Breitbart's claim that this was "not about Shirley Sherrod," when it clearly was? Didn't anyone read what Breitbart had written? In his initial post on July 19, Breitbart claimed that the video is "evidence of racism coming from a federal appointee" and that Sherrod discriminated against a white farmer in her "federal duties" as the USDA Georgia Director of Rural Development. The video itself also included text that said. "Ms. Sherrod admits that in her federally appointed position, overseeing over a billion dollars she discriminates against people due to their race." Breitbart then posted a tweet asking, "Will Eric Holder's DOJ hold accountable fed appointee Shirley Sherrod for admitting practicing racial discrimination?" After the USDA forced Sherrod out of her position in response to the deceptive video, Big Government celebrated with a post titled: "Racist Govt Official/NAACP Award Recipient Resigns after Big Government Expose."

Things quickly took a turn for the worse for Breitbart. Sherrod told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Breitbart's video completely distorted the meaning of her remarks, and media outlets - aside from Fox News, which repeatedly aired the cropped video and called Sherrod a racist - began calling for Breitbart to release the full video. Breitbart was then forced to admit that he did not have the full video and that he had smeared Sherrod as a racist based on a three-minute clip that cuts her off in the middle of her speech, indeed in the middle of a sentence. CNN later interviewed the "white farmer" who Breitbart claimed Sherrod discriminated against, and he said her critics "don't know what they're talking about" and that Sherrod had done "her level best" to help him save his farm. With the full video now available, everyone can see plainly that the facts are basically the opposite of what Breitbart claimed them to be.

The whitewash began immediately. Big Government inexplicably criticized the Obama administration for believing and reacting to what Breitbart had called "video proof" of racism by a federal official. Glenn Beck and FoxNews.com also appear to be concealing Breitbart's failure and Fox News' own horrendous coverage.

And now Breitbart is trying to cover his outrageous smear of one woman by baselessly attacking a whole group of people as racist. Will the media comply?

Breitbarf's explanation falls flat on it's own, anyway. If, as he claims, he distributed the video to show "RACISM" at a NAACP event, then he's implying just by using the clip showing Sherrod speaking that Sherrod is racist - something that's demonstrably false by the clip in its entirety.

But how many stoopid American patriots won't be able to comprehend that concept?

I am having a hard time imagining that anyone who follows or supports Breitbart would ever muster the intellectual curiousity to sit through a 40 minute speech by Ms. Sherrod. (they however would characterize it more as intestinal fortitude)to find any truth in this phoney controversy. They are not interested in anything that Sherrod might have to say then or now. They are only interested in Breitbart's narrative, which is more compelling and exciting---like watching The Jerry Springer Show. Trash in. Trash out.

Armed with full video and Breitbart' own words MMfA and the media have him dead to rights in this matter. He can't lie or spin his way out of this. But his fans can be counted on to stand by him and his version of reality, truth be damned.
      Sad isn't it?

I don't have the intestinal fortitude to avoid throwing up in disgust.

There was a fellow who wrote to our local paper to say that no one could prove that Fox News wasn't telling the truth about the issue of the day. I referred the guy to a piece in Mother Jones that showed that Fox News was full of it. He replied that he'd never trust any magazine with a silly name like Mother Jones.
Proof? Evidence? Ha, ha, ha! Don't be silly! The guy had absolutely zero interest in any sort of examination of the evidence.

Too many of them have no interest in proof. Just had the same kind of interaction with someone on another blog. Asked for proof that Fox News has ever been caught lying. I posted at least 10 examples that are easily found and proven to be false. This guy's response was that every example I gave him was from a liberal source and he refuses to believe anything that comes from a liberal source. Even though specific facts were outlined in many of the clips. Nope. Not gonna believe any of them. They're sick.

Breitbart is a smear-campaign blogger. You know what you get from him. Bloggers, for the most part, are not serious journalists who are charged with researching, corroborating, and confirming their story. He's slime that all MSM should treat as such.

The real problem here is Faux News... once again. I would expect such junk with Beck and Hannity. However, this tape made its way into its "straight news" format... which through the Van Jones and New Black Panthers, and now this... feature so-called anchors providing the same editorial comment as its supposed commentary shows.

It's Journalism 101 when you're seeing this video to treat it skeptically. You ask the question "is this is the entire video and in what context is she saying this?". Faux News needs to stop nothing short of firing producers and so-called "talent" involved in presenting this false video to its viewers as "news".

This brings to mind the Dan Rather fiasco... and all involved in airing this video as "straight news" should lose their jobs, just as Rather did. The big difference is although Rather's documents were false... the essence of his story was true.

Neither Breitbart nor Faux News can say this about their story.

Not certain the Alabama Guard documents were false. The funny thing is, if the letters were false, they most certainly were created by parties within the Bush re-election campaign to be "discovered" as false by rightwing bloggers (who had been tipped off by K--- R---). This case is in no way similar.

I think that MMFA and others are missing the larger conspiracy that underlies this whole event.

Some people have asked - why did this come up now?

I have to believe that there's an ongoing, huge conspiracy to get video of anyone and everyone within the Obama Administration, to then scrutinize that video for ANY questionable comment, and then they have the media outlets ready to "expose" those people.

As part of that conspiracy, someone got ahold of this tape, and then listened to it, and cropped out the incriminating part out of context, and then knew that they could sell that tape to Andrew Breitbart.

Bingo Dolly! The network of conservative activists out there know there is an appetite and a venue for this kind of thing. We have seen numerous examples in recent years. Rogue employees and so called "citizen journalists" are trolling for whatever they can find. Computer hacking and unauthorized ransacking of confidential files, surrepticious audio and videos and subtrefuge of every kind are employed. They know exactly where to send the dirt. Brietbart is the bottom feeder who deals in the contrived stuff. Fox can be counted on to accept directly, whatever has a patina of legitimacy and will advance whatever narrative is provided to them. Otherwise they let the bloggers puke up the uncredible stuff and simply report on that. And if a Republican politician hatches any kind of anti-administration event or rally, they know, without checking first, that Fox will promote it.

It is a marvelous system that works.

I'm surprised that the White House fell for this sort of garbage. Its the same thing the happened to their presidential candidate and his minister the Reverend Wright. Someone takes a video out of context to show what looks like an angry black man who hates America and uses it to show that Senator Obama must also be an angry black man who hates America. Of course if you see the entire sermon you can see and hear what was really said and meant. The same goes for Mrs. Sherrod. I do hope the White House (President Obama in particular) uses this incident in a very public way like a press conference, to explain how this kind of crap keeps getting used by certain web sites and Faux News. Wouldn't that be something to behold.

This is perfect for the Media.Look at what they get out of all this:

      1. They get to bring on Andrew so he acts like a Carny Side-show Freak on the air - good for ratings.

      2. They get to practice "investigative journalism" by debunking Andrew (kind of like punching a rubber Bozo the Clown).

      3. They get to fill-up air time on this nonsense so they don't have to deal with real stories (the Economy, the Wars, etc).

      4. They get some back-handed shots and the current Administration so their corporate masters feel ok about everything.

All in all this is exactly what the Media love. The next time Andrew pulls one of his video-stunts you can bet the Media will be all over it...

      Sigh...

Comrades! The real story here is that Comrade Presidente Obama "acted stupidly" and fired someone before all the facts were in (due process). A mature adult would have at least watched the video in context and maybe even picked up the phone and talked to the lady.

What the video reveals is that she WAS a racist and is now ok with discriminating against people of differing economic statures; she's a STATIST which fits in well with this Administration.

It also reveals that the NAACCP (National Association for the Advancement of Communist Colored Persons) is racist and discriminatory.

Elevating one group of citizens over another at the expense of all is immoral and a key component of Socialism.

Socialism in ANY form is immoral and EVIL!

It is really sad to see so many knee-jerk reactions. Especially sad from the Obama administration. Finally, it was Breitbart, consider the source.

Although The Health Care Bill is not a race, Shirley Sherrod did accuse those who did not support The Health Care Bill of being racist. This type of accusation is part of the problem not the solution, and for this reason I think her statement regarding The Health Care Bill must be addressed before she is reinstated.

I am sorry about what happened to Mrs. Sherrod. She did not deserve the hateful responses caused by such an intentional, manipulative action. It resulted in her losing her job and being harrassed and unfairly judged.

I am also sorry about the residual effects that resulted from the same intentional, manipulative action. I can't say whether or not it was race-bating, but it certainly appears to have been
hate-bating. And it worked extremely well. Just go back and reread the entries on this site. So many of them are filled with hateful, vile, judgemental remarks, from both sides. And the sad thing is that the worst ones will be viewed by the authors as righteous and just. How can decent people be so horrible to complete strangers.

Maybe it would be wise to step back and review whatever your personal moral, spiritual, or religious beliefs, or lack of beliefs, are and then decide if your comments are compatible. Be grateful that you live in a free country that is not socialist, communist or fascist and is not under the control of a regime despite claims of otherwise. We are all in this together.

I have been knee deep in this story for most of the day. Today when I heard Breitbart on a morning show, I was appalled at his attempt to justify his actions. The reason he put forth was childish. I thought I was at school..."OH H.. NO!!!", it's summer vacation! What he cited and acted out just did not settle well with me. I could not let the drama go. I tuned in to CNN later in the day. Not only did I have an opportunity to hear that justification again, I also viewed and heard the speech in CONTEXT. Breitbart... in the kindness way I can put it... IS NOT WELL!!! I am a career middle school educator. I have dealt with some interesting students and parents. To say the least, Breibart is psychologically impaired as well as dangerous!!!

People will accept Breitbart's weak excuses; at the same time thee same types of people will defend Mel Gibson's misogynistic, racist threatening, panting, rage-out scream-fest against the mother of his baby by stating "she must have done something to cause him to act that way." Blaming the victim is easier than thinking for oneself.
