WSJ's Peggy Noonan: Sherrod was "smeared by right-wing media"; victim of "high-tech lynching"

July 26, 2010 9:14 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Ouch

Noonan also goes on to demolish the right-wing talking point that Shirley Sherrod's entire NAACP speech confirmed she had problems with race and vindicated Andrew Breitbart's attempt to go after her. Noonan says that Sherrod's speech about grace and redemption should actually be taught in American classrooms:

This September, when school begins, we should make the speech required viewing in the nation's high schools. It packs quite a lesson within quite a story.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Breitbart's minions at his websites label Noonan a racist. Or something. Because that's how they respond to bouts of necessary truth telling.

Ms. Sherrod was indeed smeared by Breitbart and his minions, no doubt about it. And I'm still dismayed at how quickly the USDA acted in asking for her resignation, instead of investigating and looking into the accusations of Breitbart et all.

The mere fact that those words were out there was more than enough to fire her for under the zero tolerance policy which had been enacted by the USDA after having to pay out BIG bucks for discrimination claims. Do I agree with it? No. Zero tolerance policies are rarely well thought out and fair.

That's a good point. Think of the lawsuits that would be directed at the government. Using your government office to play favorites is a serious charge.

I am glad to see a conservative speak out on this instead of making more excuses or counter attack.

Zero tolerance is being used to put many children out of school. This often times discourages many from comming back.Zero tolerance policies at work, and school, are almost never fair because zero does not mean the same to all people.Enough zeros can make one be 10,or a billion.Zero makes it easy to cheat, and be unfair,in many ways

Does zero tolerance mean that they don't look into the story, and accept as fact a hatchet job from a known liar? That's really the issue that I have about the Obama administration firing her, oops, asking for her resignation. I don't believe they asked about her what actually happened, just asked her to resign.

Regardless of 'well thought out' or 'fair,' a zero tolerance policy needs to be enforced to be effective. Witness the effectiveness of Fox's policy.

I think Noonan has opened herself up to accusations of trying to indoctrinate students with the "required viewing" statement.
