Petition: Tell the White House Correspondents Association to give Helen Thomas' vacated briefing room seat to NPR, not FOX

July 29, 2010 6:30 pm ET by Media Matters staff

This weekend, the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) is meeting to decide which news organization will be awarded the seat in the White House briefing room that was recently vacated by Helen Thomas. CREDO Action is currently running a campaign to tell the WHCA to award the seat to NPR, rather than Fox News.

As we have been documenting on a daily basis - and CREDO points out in their petition - Fox News is a right-wing propaganda organization, not a legitimate news outlet.

They have collected more than 80% of their targeted 200,000 signatures. Read the petition text below and add your name to the more than 162,000 signers:

FOX News is a right-wing propaganda operation, not a legitimate news organization. Award the seat vacated by Helen Thomas to NPR, which has provided public interest coverage of the presidency and the White House for almost four decades.

The annoying thing about this is that it shouldn't take a petition. It should be a complete no-brainer.

Look, if for some bizarre reason the WH gives Fox the seat--Fox will crow about how the even the WH recognizes them as a news organization. If they don't--FOX will whine and take pot shots at Obama as they already do.

It IS "a complete no-brainer"...just not the way you mean it.

How ironic, using a far left organization like NPR to attack FOX News.

Would a "far left organization" include reports from The Wall Street Journal? I think most independent critics as well as most NPR listeners believe that NPR has moved to the right over the years.

I guess that as POV sees it, any source that is more liberal than NewsMax or World Nut Daily is "far left"......

And as MM sees it, anybody right of Marxx is an evil conservative hate-monger.

        How ironic
How idiotic, delusional, and divorced from reality.

You are showing your complete ignorance of NPR. Their straight news coverage is the most evenhanded coverage there is. Their in depth analysis and special reports provides all major sides of issues to present their cases and share their opinions. You can often hear more conservatives sharing their views than liberals. NPR is a fine news organization and doesn't match the "far left" description at all.

The problem is that reality has a liberal bias. If forced to hear facts, all of their arguments fall apart. So it's better to just nestle in the warm embrace of right-wing loonyland. It makes life very simple, when none of the information you choose to consume runs counter to the fictional narrative Fox and Newsmax provide.

NPR is hardly "far left"! My progressive friends call it "National Public Relations"!

(Insert subtle tone of sarcasm here) YEAH! Because NPR is fair & balanced & never shapes a story (or ignores one) to advance a partisan political agenda...right?
