WashPost TV critic smears ABC's Amanpour as possible Taliban sympathizer

August 02, 2010 8:27 am ET by Eric Boehlert

This is really just beyond the pale.

Everyone knows that Post critic Tom Shales can't stand Christiane Amanpour and has what is now officially a creepy obsession with belittling her work. Shales began his rather unsightly campaign back in March when ABC announced Amanpour would be taking over as host of ABC's This Week on Sundays. (Shales objected to the Amanpour choice because conservatives objected. Or something.)

So naturally when Amanpour made her debut this weekend, Shales panned her work. (She's too foreign!) And yes, he did it in weirdly personal and catty way, referring to Amanpour as a "globe-trotting Fancy-Pants."

But this slight from Shales' critique was particularly hateful, uncalled for, and completely unprofessional [emphasis added]:

Perhaps in keeping with the newly globalized program, the commendable "In Memoriam" segment ended with a tribute not to American men and women who died in combat during the preceding week but rather, said Amanpour in her narration, in remembrance of "all of those who died in war" in that period. Did she mean suggest that our mourning extend to members of the Taliban?

Are you kidding me? Shales really suggested that on her network debut, Amanpour gave a shout-out to members of the Taliban who died in combat last week? What is wrong with this man and when will Shales have the decency to extend an apology to Amanpour?

Here's the full clip of Amanpour's "In Memoriam" segment. Shales must have been the only viewer on the planet who thought Amanpour was honoring fallen terrorists on ABC yesterday.

UPDATED: Not surprisingly, Shales' cowardly attack, which he had to invent, has been picked up by the right-wing media haters. Here, Newsbusters claims Amanpour would "mourn Taliban deaths."

Shales has given right wingers a talking point?

Or is he repeating a talking point he received from them?

Well, he was first out of the gate, so let's give him the benefit of a doubt.(That's my general attitude about these things; if somebody wants to be the first to claim ownership of the latest smear, give them the "honour" of it).

I'm sorry cst, but with all of the daily MediaMatters "GET BECK'S ADVERTISERS TO CANCEL" coverage, I must have missed the vast-right-wing-conspiracy to force Ms. Amanpour off the air. Would you please be so kind as to provide a link to the right-wing blog that's waging that campaign?

Amanpour should know by now that a journalist isn't allowed to discuss American war dead without including a reference to greasing the tracks of our tanks with the guts of dead Taliban members.

      What was she thinking?

The Troglodytes are fully aware of how well Jingoism works on the small-minded. Jingoism, combined with fear, is what re-elected Dumbya in 2004 (if you assume they didn't cheat).

It's nice to know that I can always count on nerzog to call folks nasty names like 'Troglodytes' and mock them by turning their names (nick-names) into insults on their intelligence like 'Dumbya', and that we can count on the MM staff to evenly and fairly apply their TOU to everybody equally.

Now if only he had remembered to shatter Goodwin's law while he were at it we would have a virtual hat-trick. What's up with not calling him a Nazi nerzog? You aren't going soft on us are you?

Amanpour can prove her Loyalty to the Troops if, next Sunday, she wears a flag pin (a big one) and apologizes to all the wingnuts and chickenhawks she so deeply offended.

I'll just say it, Shales is a racist.

Anyone who assumes that she, a person of Middle Eastern descent, is sympathizing with the Taliban (as opposed to other NATO allies who have lost their own soldiers this past week) has looked at her appearance and/or the spelling of her surname and gone Breitbart.

Of course you will. Now if my post only gets posted before this becomes a dead thread, maybe you can call me a racist too! Won't that be fun?

Actually you have it slightly wrong. Shales is a horrid sexist. He likes any movie, TV, show, with a young attractive blonde in it. He hates anything that contains a woman who looks and behaves like an adult woman. Everything else is just collateral damage.

No, no, you're BOTH right. Tom Shales is a sexist and a racist.

He's also a bitter, effete snob who makes a living acting superior and telling people what they should think. Only dopes fall for it, though.

The Washington Post can't go out of business fast enough for me. On that point, I agree with the Far Right.

I'm surprised Shales didn't make a reference to her weight.

That fat man is more self-conscious about his own problems (that he projects onto everyone he reviews) than anyone I have ever read.

And, if Shales hates a TV program, I can usually count on it being a good program to watch. If he like something, that usually means it's horrid.

I DID think that her comment was somewhat different when I heard it yesterday, and listening to it again today hasn't changed my mind.

It sure seems to me like she's talking about all people who died in any and all worldwide conflicts on either side of the battlefield, and then specifically mentioned US servicemen.

Now, I don't have a problem with her expressing that empathy.

But to say, as Shales did, that her tribute to all those who have died in war didn't cover Americans ("ended with a tribute not to American men and women who died in combat during the preceding week but rather") is ridiculous, and to suggest that she's specifically rooting for the Taliban is even more offensive.

I viewed it more as a tribute not only to our brave men and women we have over there needlessly, but also so show respect to the lives of the innocent civilians that have died.

It's more of a, a few thousand innocent Americans died on 9/11 and how many countless innocent people of the Middle East have died in two bloody wars of oil and revenge, type of thing.
        IMO

i am not naive. i know there will always be wars. but one positive step humanity can make is to stop simply mourning" our" dead and ignoring "their " dead. i do mourn the deaths of taliban(not al-queda) dead. i mourn the loss of all soldiers(not terrorists) as well as all civilians. it is inconceivable to me that an adult can find it so mystifying that someone might regret the violent death of any human regardless of their religion or colour or what side of a war they are on. p.s the taliban are not terrorists, they are fighting in a war, and using whatever means necessary. you dont like i.e.d.s and suicide vests, I dont like drones and cruise missiles. I suspect those who are slaughtered really dont care much either way

That's how I took it as well. She was showing respect to the civilians who were killed who don't get their names published or get honors in their names because they aren't in the service. War does not confine it's casualties to just those doing the actual fighting.

I think Shales is asking a basic question here. Are all deaths equal? Does she mourn enemy deaths equally as coalition and civilian deaths? I don't see why these questions can't be asked.

I couldn’t detect any bias on the part of Ms. Amanpour. But I also couldn’t detect any exceptionalism on her part. Tom Shales is right, Amanpour lacks the necessary ingredients to make a successful host. ABC should seriously consider Next Week with Jake Tapper.

I love this site, but this column is off the mark and the headline is grossly misleading. Shales may have been cranky and unfair in his assessment of the show, but by no means was he suggesting that Amanpour is a Taliban sympathizer. He was asking (rhetorically) whether listing the names of the war dead would include names of Taliban members. I applaud him for pointing out how many people have lost their jobs at ABC - particularly in the Washington bureau. This was why so many current and former employees of the network were so resentful when she was hired.

Keep up the good work, but please be fair.
