Glenn Beck now in the soul-healing game

August 10, 2010 12:24 pm ET by Simon Maloy

Televangelist and religious guru Glenn Beck, who has been known to host a program on cable news, is now telling his faithful flock that their salvation is at hand, and all they have to do is travel to Washington, DC on the eve of his 8-28 rally for the mother of all tent revivals, modestly titled "Glenn Beck's Divine Destiny."

While you ponder the ambiguity of that title (is it Divine Destiny brought to you by Glenn Beck, or is it Glenn Beck proclaiming his own divine destiny?) take a moment to read Beck's description of the event, as it was posted on his website this morning:

Glenn Beck's Divine Destiny is an eye-opening evening at the historic Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C that will help heal your soul. Guided by uplifting music, nationally-known religious figures from all faiths will unite to deliver messages reminiscent to those given during the struggles of America's earliest days. The event will leave you with a renewed determination to look past the partisan differences and petty problems that fill our airwaves and instead focus our shared values, principles and strong belief that faith can play an essential role in reuniting the country.

I'm a little incredulous that "all faiths" will be represented at Beck's event, given his many documented troubles with Islam and casual disdain for non-monotheistic cultures. I envision a scenario more akin to something out of The Blues Brothers: "Oh, we got both kinds of faiths -- Christian and Jewish!"

It's possible that Beck is sincere in his desire to "heal your soul," but don't believe for a minute that participants in the event will walk out with a "renewed determination to look past the partisan differences and petty problems that fill our airwaves." If that were the case, Beck would have to instruct them to not watch his program. I also don't think that Beck is necessarily qualified to be in the soul-healing game, given that he earns his rather comfortable living by sowing division and rancor, often in explicitly religious terms.

And it's the overt religiosity that makes this more troubling than Beck's other scams, like Goldline or Beck University. Those are just bad investments, and anyone who gets taken in will, at worst, lose a little money and their faith in the financial and educational wisdom of cable news hosts. Religion is a whole different animal, though, and is usually worth a lot more to people than the contents of their checking accounts.

[It's possible that Beck is sincere in his desire to "heal your soul,"]

It's also possible that purple monkeys will fly out of his butt... but I seriously doubt it. He's following in the footsteps of that famous con man, Joseph Smith.

As for "lookng past partisan differences"? Bullsh*t. The attendees at this little hatefest will emerge more convinced than ever that Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ. Count on it.

It's interesting that you mention Joseph Smith. I've just been reading a book about him (No Man Knows My History) and could not escape the thought that Glenn is a Joseph Smith want to be. I hadn't heard anyone make the connection before. Right on!

Have you read Under the Banner of Heaven? I highly recommend it. It gives a less than flattering account of Joseph Smith's invention of the Mormon Religion. He was a con man who was literally run out of town on a rail once.

He basically created a religion for which he was the conduit to God's revelation, and God just happened to wanted Smith to be the head of his own church, and marry multiple teenage girls. What a deal!

I'm amazed that so many people were duped by Smith, and even more amazed that so many are duped by Beck. I guess the sun never sets on human stupidity.

Once again, Beck is falling back on what has become one of his show's daily personas next to the tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist, would-be history professor, and hack constitutional scholar.

His "fundamentalist preacher" mode is just one more character Beck has in his quiver to exploit his chief demographic: older whites who are easy to scare and easier to con out of their credit card numbers.

When I first heard of Glenn Beck, he was spewing political nonsense. I was offended, but he is entitled to his opinions. But when he started to go after Social Justice and attacking Liberals based on his own distorted religious opinions, I was deeply offended. Frankly, I find the man evil and a danger to the country. I know he will ultimately fail in his endeavor, people will catch on to him, but I worry about how many people will be hurt, financially, spiritually, or even physically by the forces that this man is playing with?

I agree. He's taking on a lot of the trappings of a cult leader. I don't think for a minute that he's sincere in any of this, but his sycophants apparently think he is... and that's what makes him dangerous.

Yes, more and more, it is becoming cultish. And the anger in his voice is palable. I think the anger and hatrid are the only things that are sincere about him. I also think he really does want to control society in his own image like Oprah did. It struck me when he had Michael Buble on his show. He wants to decide for all of us what we should be exposed to and how we should think about all sorts of things. It is cultish.

      I've considered 2 possibilities here:

      A) Beck is planning a huge terrorist attack and is going to somehow "cleanse" the people of their devilish, earthly, corrupted bodies.

      B) Beck is going to declare himself a prophet of a new religion/sect/etc.

Beck desperately wants to be remembered. I can't fathom how any history book will actually remember him as doing something GOOD, so either he's going to something extremely evil, or create his own book that will remember him. He may have a serious case of Joseph Smith envy. Smith is a controversial person, but at the very least, Mormons know who he is. That's probably enough for Beck.

I think you've nailed it... Beck sees himself as the modern day Joseph Smith. Smith was a known con man, just like Beck. In today's environment, televangelists rake in piles of money; think how rich the founder of a new religion could become!

Gee, let me see, he's a shill for a company under investigation for defrauding its customers, he's the purveyor of an incoherent fringe political ideology, he runs a sham "university", he fancies himself an educator despite having none himself, and now he's a spiritual leader?

Are there any other scams he could run to separate the foolish from their cash?

Maybe an infomercial with Vince featuring a political Sham-wow that soaks up liberalism and social justice with one stroke?

Beck is proving more strongly with every action, that Keith Olbermann has chosen the right name for him,"Lonesome Rhodes."For those not familiar, this is the name of a cynical flim-flam man in the movie "A Face In The Crowd." The character comes to a bad end when those closest to him expose his mendacity in public. I can only hope the same will happen with Beck. I think he might have skated a little close to the edge last week when he used the "Planet Of The Apes" analogy for today's America: but even liberals seemed not to be paying attention, and he received just a small amount of criticism. He should have been taken off the air.

Gotta admit, I know next to nothing about ol' Joe Smith. But A Face in the Crowd is one of my all-time favorite movies and I have long thought Olbermann pretty well nailed the Crazy Man by comparing him to Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes.
Lately though, I see more Elmer Gantry in the Crazy Man.
